Ethics Dunce: Gov. Rick Perry

Academic achievements has a tenuous relationship to effective leadership at best, but at least being brilliant and knowledgeable aren’t handicaps. Recklessness, laziness, arrogance and confusion, however, are. Continue reading

Now THIS Is Hypocrisy!

In its continuing effort to help illustrate the proper use of the words “hypocrite” and “hypocrisy” for those journalists, pundits, politicians, activists and members of the public who seem to have difficulty with the concepts, Ethics Alarms presents another installment of “Now THIS is Hypocrisy!” Continue reading

Comment of the Day: “Dear God: Stop Calling”

Michael’s Comment of the Day on my recent post about politicians announcing that they have been “called” to the presidency usefully details how not all divine callings are equally objectionable. Continue reading

Clearing the Ethics Palette of Despair, Finding Hope

Patrice Roe, a dear friend, a wise woman and an occasional reader here sent me this story, about a father who gave his life to rescue his Down Syndrome son under remarkable circumstances. Today it was just what I needed to read, to clear my ethics palette of some terrible tasting tales that generated too many toxic thoughts. It reminded me that out beyond the greasy ethics smog of Washington, D.C. there are people who do the right thing when it matters, more than we know. Continue reading

Horrifying Mothers To Sell Videogames

This month’s Games Magazine’s column “Inside the Box” has some exemplary ethics commentary from video game reviewer Thomas McDonald, who took “Dead Space 2″ makers Electronic Arts to task for its advertising campaign for the horror game, to which he had given a rave review. Continue reading

The Chivalry Curse, the President, and the Dazzling Smile

Obama’s words about the Democratic National Committee Chairman, like words I have heard male supervisors, CEO’s and managers use toward female colleagues on many occasions, are the equivalent of a pat on the head, or somewhere else. Often I suspect that compliments like “charming” and “dazzling smile” are really socially acceptible stand-ins for “hot” and “great rack.” Did Obama mean them that way? Of course not. But he, like me, has been watching men treat women in the workplace “nice” all his professional life; it comes natural to him, like saying thank you. But by using such condescending words, he still perpetuates a culture of male domination in places of power. Continue reading

White House Mendacity on Libya

The Obama Administration’s argument that the Resolution doesn’t apply isn’t even legalistic nonsense—it’s just dishonest nonsense of the kind that the President of the United Sates should not indulge in, to Congress, to the media, to the public, to anyone. Continue reading

Return to a Sore Subject

I was going to wait until the six-month mark in Gaby Gifford’s rehabilitation to raise this matter again, since that will mark a full 25% of the Congresswoman’s term that she has been unable to serve, but the combination of Weiner’s resignation and the news of Giffords being released from the hospital created too much dissonance for me to ignore. I fully expect that I will be writing some version of this post 18 months hence, after Rep. Giffords’ entire Congressional term has passed without her voting on a bill or answering a constituent’s letter. To quote the singing John Adams in “1776,”: “Is anybody there? Does anybody care?” Continue reading

Pointless, Obvious, Unbelievable Lies: How I Hate Them!

We see this kind of announcement all the time. Everyone knows why someone prominent has been fired, or resigns, or retires, and yet the organization that pushed them puts out blatantly dishonest public announcements. Continue reading
