Will Somebody Please Explain To The President That Children Are Not Props, Puppets or Set Dressing?

Finger puppets

“White House Press Secretary Jay Carney announced this afternoon that President Obama will unveil a “concrete package” of gun control proposals including assault weapons bans, high capacity ammunition magazine bans, and closing loopholes on background checks. Carney said that the president will be joined by Vice President Joe Biden as well as children who wrote to the president after the Newtown shootings.“They will be joined by children around the country expressing their concerns about gun violence and school safety, along with their parents,” Carney confirmed”—News reports.

What, no babies? How about golden retriever puppies?

Jerry’s Kids in wheelchairs?

How about the bodies of recent shooting victims?

As Kant would remind us, children are not props, should not be used as props, and should not be forced to serve as meat puppets and sentimental set dressing for political announcements. This is dehumanizing and disrespectful of their autonomy.

It is even more disrespectful than treating the American public like idiots.

  1. Well it rather says something when they have to resort to kids to get their public policy messages across doesn’t it? That wacko teacher that wrote the Obama song for her classmates to sing took the cake. It went viral. You know which one I mean …… Barack Hussein Obama …..mmmm, mmmm, mmmmm. All I could think about was the kids in Germany under Adolph Hitler singing their little hearts about about their revered gestapo. I may be overreacting a little …..it’s just that your message touched a nerve.

  2. I’ve been dealing with that on my Facebook page, Jack. This is what the Left does, though. To them, children are only as worthy as what pathos can be wrung out of them as tools of their agenda. Hollywood, of course, reflects this to an obscene degree.

  3. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney announced this afternoon that President Obama will unveil a “concrete package” of gun control proposals including assault weapons bans, high capacity ammunition magazine bans, and closing loopholes on background checks.

If he does not disarm the Secret Service of assault weapons and high capacity magazines, then he is a hypocrite.

    • No, he won’t be a hypocrite, he will just be a liar. He doesn’t want these proposals to make life safer for us, he just wants them to make things more convenient for people like him. He wants to ban firearms, he really does, he is just lying about why he want to do it.

The sad thing is that a much more important discussion is going on without any real media attention. The wife of one of the men killed in the Aurora, Colorado shooting is suing the psychiatrist that treated the shooter. The question is, “who is responsible for keeping the public safe from the mentally ill who are dangerous?”.

•The psychiatrist in question denied a police offer to detain the man for 72 hours because he was a danger to himself and others after he told the psychiatrist that he fantasized about killing lots of people.

•He had been banned from the Medical Campus where he studied for threatening a professor.

•The psychiatrist dropped him as a patient because he threatened to kill one of the psychiatrists on staff (possibly her, it wasn’t specified).

So, the medical profession of psychiatry feels that the proper method of dealing with a patient who says they want to hurt people and threatens to kill the people around them is to keep the police from getting involved. When the individual become so dangerous that the psychiatrist is afraid to be around them, the proper thing to do is drop them as a patient and let them wander around society with no mental health care at all. Even though psychiatrists are the only ones who can involuntarily commit such a person for the safety of society, they don’t want to get involved.

So, if it isn’t the police’s job, not the psychiatrists’ job, and not the judges’ jobs, whose job is it?

  4. When I heard this on the news, my immediate thought was “Oh yes…the children just spontaneously wrote letters to the President and it wasn’t suggested by any adults whatsoever….yaright!”
