Ouch.
A Colombian man whose wife refused to have sexual relations with him castrated himself to remove any temptation to become the next Tiger Woods.
This is in some ways admirable, don’t you think? Luis Alphonso Sanchez Ortiz wanted to be faithful to his wife and his faith, and didn’t trust himself to be able to resist the lure of infidelity. The disadvantages of self-mutilation are, after all, non-ethical considerations, and he chose to pursue ethical values like trustworthiness, loyalty and integrity. This is normally an ethically courageous act.
There are times, however, when choosing non-ethical considerations over ethical values is not only the less painful choice, but the better one. I’m not prepared to explore examples right now, but I will say this.
There are things one can do that are both ethical and crazy, and if self-castration isn’t at the top of the list, it’s awfully close.
“If thy eye offend thee, pluck it out” applied strictly – just to a different organ.
Well, it’s a way to go I guess.
I’d say the way he went about it was pretty irresponsible, now requiring hospitalization that may deprive his family of income, or burden the health care system needlessly.
Not only that, but the lack of testosterone in his body will impact his personality, and may decrease his earning potential or ability to provide for his family.
I wonder if he consulted his wife about the decision to render himself a eunuch. Apparently not — that in and of itself looks like an ethical failing, since his marriage surely entitled her to perhaps change her mind about availing herself of his marital desire later on.
At the very least, he was thoughtless of the potential negative impact on his family, and apparently failed to solicit his wife’s counsel before neutering himself.
You know, I considered going into all that. Then there’s the Darwinesque approach: his does not seem like a genetic line that humanity will benefit from extending. There may have been a good reason why the Missus had decided to go cold turkey.
Ethics, shmethics. The man’s a nutcase. Self-mutilation is something more than a “non-ethical consideration.”
Why, what ever could you mean?
