Damn Palm Springs, California: I was about to quit for the day, but I had to return to the blog for this ridiculous story.
The Palm Springs AIDS Memorial Task Force is now backtracking after revealing its preliminary choice for a memorial to the victims of AIDS. The memorial is being funded privately with an expected cost of approximately $500,000. After considerable study, the winning design, planned for erection (Stop it!) in the Downtown Park near the Marilyn Monroe statue is a nine feet tall limestone structure with concentric carved circles, symbolizing, we are told, “the diverse impact of AIDS on the community” and ” intended to evoke feelings of connection, reflection, and hope.”
It also looks a lot like an anus. Not that there’s anything wrong with that….
Some members of the community in Palm Springs are concerned that the memorial may be <cough> misunderstood. “I can just visualize the whole slew of potential social media posts, making fun of something that is so important to our community,” one critic said. “It’s become a laughingstock,” another said. “Because it looks like what it looks like, it’s become a joke. And that’s the last thing we want.”
Huh. Now that you mention it…I wonder why no one else on the committee notices the anatomical resemblance and the negative connotations it would have “for some”?

I give up. Just give up. I will not expend any energy on this except to try to forget it. Some things are not worth knowing, and this is one of them.
(claps hand over mouth to avoid making disgusting joke)
Huh?
You mean that Rick model of a Lifesaver looks like an Anus?
No, it looks like an attractive nuisance (unlike most anuses, anae?). It looks like an invitation to knock it down, or roll it away.
Either way, it would appear to be conceived of by a gaggle of ignoramusses, ignoramae?(Is there an adjective for a group of idiots? A mob? That’s the ticket!)

In architecture school we developed a set of basic no-no rules that the professors didn’t teach us-
Never design anything that could potentially look like:
Boobs
Phallus
Vagina
Swastika
Welp…. Time to add a 5th rule.
Hairy balloon knot?
Once again, having a middle schooler in the committee would have saved them the embarrassment.
The task force and artist have their heads so far up their own backsides they forgot what that looks like.
(Couldn’t resist)
Sorry. Looks like a sand dollar on its side to me. Hilarious. I guess I’m just a standard issue heterosexual from South Florida. Sigh. I guess West Palm has become another gay enclave, like Key West and Ft. Lauderdale. Have at it, boys.
Palm Springs, CA not Palm Beach, FL.
Hah! Well, that explains it! Even funnier.
8th comment before anyone caught that stupid mistake: you win. See, Curmie never makes mistakes like that. Fixed. Thanks.
So, would it be going entirely too far to wonder whether the committee’s discussion included comments (and nods of agreement) along the lines of “I don’t exactly know why, but that design really appeals to me for some reason.” ?
Wim will be here all week, folks.
Nobody has said so outright, but does anyone believe that anatomical allusion was an accident? I refuse to accept that. I think a narrow-range, tunnel-visioned panel was convinced that LGBTQ chic had become so cool and acceptable and that only deplorable prudes and Bible-thumper had any problem with alternative sexual practices that the design was considered bold, honest and inoffensive. This episode is a bias makes you stupid classic.
I don’t see how people can keep “accidentally” making these mistakes. That statue is clearly an anus. They did it on purpose.
Yes, I was willing to accept that the “Embrace” monstrosity wasn’t intentionally supposed to look like a giant penis, but this one has to be a deliberate and angry “fuck you all” gesture to the non-gay world.
You know, I long ago stopped using the nasty attack humor referring to gay people and the “brown, stinky tide” that poked fun at anal intercourse, but stuff like this makes me wonder…
Did they swap the AIDS Memorial Task Force with the Piles Memorial Task Force?
This is absurd but it’s California Jack, CALIFORNIA! You’d think there’s something toxic in their water that destroys logic and critical thinking.
Question 1: Why did Palm Springs feel the need to create an AIDS Memorial Task Force?
Question 2: Why did Palm Springs think an AIDS memorial of any kind was necessary?
Question 3: When are people going to stop their social tribalization created by intentional virtue signaling towards tunnel visioned identity groups?
Question 4: If equity is truly important to modern woke activists, then when is the United States going to have a cultural month specifically celebrating white heterosexual male European/American culture, after all, that’s a valid identity group too?
This virtue signaling fad is completely off it’s moral rocker and fallen over the edge of reality into completely absurdity. All this intentional tribalization is socially destructive and I’ll have no part of it. We have Epidemic Levels Of Absurdities Infecting Our Society and these woke activists either have their heads buried so far up their pompous asses that they can’t see the social destruction that they are causing or this is all very intentional and intended to completely destroy the sovereignty of the United States of America in favor of some irrationally perceived utopian world government that’s pure Orwellian totalitarianism.
Okay, discuss.
P.S. For those of you that might have noticed my recent lack of participation, I’ve been dealing with ongoing family emergencies that are occupying much of my time and will be for the foreseeable future. I still read when I can but I have little to no time to actively participate. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel that’s hopefully not an oncoming train but it’s a long tunnel that must be traversed.
Good luck, Steve.
Christopher Rufo is really good on explicating the culture decay/war. He describes it as a group/societal mental illness. Maybe “he diagnoses it as a group/social mental illness” would be more accurate.
You beat me to it. I was wondering why we are spending 500k to create a memorial to those who died from AIDS when we see no such effort to create a memorial for those who died from the virus created in Wuhan China that killed millions around the world, closed tens of thousands of businesses here in the US and disemployed millions of Americans because one firm funneled taxpayer dollars to a third party that did the illegal gain of function research in China.
What’s next? An obvious phallic symbol such as an obelisk with a ring around it? A tower with a revolving restaurant? Okay, there are plenty of those around the world already.
I mean, I thought it looked like a millstone, and it was mumble mumble about “the grind”; Or that they were emulating a stonehedge dealio for a neolithic chic. Maybe I just don’t think about certain anatomy?
