And While We’re On the Topic of “Science” and Climate Change…

President Joe Biden’s climate adviser Ali Zaidi continued the intellectual dishonesty of the Biden administration’s climate change pandering, warning this week that that the President’s political rivals are preparing a “U-turn agenda” that would reverse all the administration’s “progress.” He was appealing to young, ignorant, woke climate change cultists who are threatening to refuse to support Biden’s re-election, since he hasn’t sent U.S. business and society back to the stone age.

Zaidi said that a reversal of Biden’s policies “actually puts us on a U-turn trajectory. A U-turn to [a] less competitive economy. A U-turn to unsafe communities, a U-turn on jobs. That’s a really big deal. It’s very problematic.”

He also claimed, ludicrously, that passions of young people on this topic reflects their experiences, with “wildfires turning the skies orange” and policymakers’ actions “failing to meet the urgency their generation believes is needed to keep global temperature increases in check.” He said, however, that the administration is heeding the the “call of science,” with Biden is committed to his goal of slashing U.S. emissions in half this decade.

None of the wildfires of recent years have been credibly connected to climate change. Moreover, who cares what barely-educated life-neophytes “believe”? They don’t actually know anything except what demagogues and partisan scientists dumbing down their rhetoric tell them.

There is no science that shows that the U.S. cutting emissions in half will have any effect on climate change and global warning at all, other than creating economic hardship for Americans. Nor will a “U-Turn” in the cynical politics and ideology-driven environmental policies of the Biden administration have any verified negative effect on global warming. Absent major, self-devastating actions by developing nations, Russia, China, and India that they are not going to take, anything the U.S. does to restrict carbon emissions is virtue signalling to the partisan Left, gratuitous self-abuse, and entirely speculative anyway.

It should tell us all we need to recognize this posturing for what it is that Zaidi is a “climate policy advisor” with no background or training in science. He’s a lawyer with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He couldn’t tell a competent climate scientist from a total political agenda-driven hack. His job is to advise Biden on what kind of environmental polices will win the most votes. If they don’t work and are revealed as wastes of billions after none of the speculative climate models pan out? Not his problem, as long as Democrats con enough young, naive Greta Thunberg acolytes to vote blue.

How’s that snowfall on Mt. Kilimanjaro doing, Al?

  1. .04 percent of the atmosphere. CO2. A naturally occurring gas. Yep, we’re all gonna die from it. It’s Kryptonite! And we’re going to have electric airplanes and freight trains and trucks and bulldozers and tractors and the electricity will all come from the sun and wind all day every day and all year round and right to our cell phones and everyone will ride public transportation, just like they do in Park Slope. Not just in the U.S., but everywhere. And it will create lots of jobs and be free, because it’s from the sun and wind! Yay!

  2. One of the historical routes to becoming wealthy was to be invested in extraction industries. I believe that one of the drivers of the climate hysteria is that it provides a new avenue for market makers to create wealth for themselves by convincing the public we are all going to die if we don’t buy what they are selling. Government abets these marketers by funding research that amplifies the narrative and creates regulations that effectively driving those invested in extraction either out of business or to develop technologies that less capitalized firms could exploit.

The other driver is part of the Chinese Belt and Road plan to control strategic energy resources. The CCP’s activities in Africa are evidence of this. Ironically I don’t hear the academics complain about Chinese imperialism or colonialism.

Most of the wealth created from attempts to shift away from fossil fuels is being concentrated in Chinese firms that are attempting to monopolize the elements in the value chain. American firms benefit from consulting and installation but that is about it.

Reasonable people can debate how to lessen human impact on the environment but acquiescing to scientists whose livelihoods are predicated on federal research grants is a fools errand. Following the science should not require censoring those scientists or data analysts who challenge the preferred narrative.

  3. Here’s a good, fact-filled, climate-related OpEd from the Japanese news source Nikkei Asia. It’s written by a researcher at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA.

“China is main beneficiary of West’s futile energy transition push”

    It begins:

“U.S. President Joe Biden, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the heads of the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and World Economic Forum, and almost all mainstream media agree that the world is in the midst of an energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

They all present this as an undisputed fact even though there are no indications that renewable energy is really taking the place of global consumption of fossil fuels. But this wishful assumption of an energy transition is contributing to the squandering of economic resources and Western deindustrialization, as well as generating significant national security hazards.

China is the main benefactor of the West’s energy transition policies. It is set to retain a huge competitive advantage in manufacturing from cheap and reliable electricity, while the West moves to more expensive, unreliable power sources.

Most transition policies are centered on Western efforts to reduce emissions, with little reciprocal behavior demanded from China. It is time to face facts about the prospects for an energy transition and to take a U-turn on policies that are mostly benefiting China. Energy and manufacturing policies should instead be based on reality…”

Pity it hasn’t appeared in any US media. Yet.
