Brevard County School Superintendent: “We Hold Our Leaders to the Highest Standards…” Yeah, RIGHT.

Roosevelt Elementary School (in Cocoa Beach, Florida) principal Elizabeth Hill-Brodigan (above, right) held a party with more than 100 teens in attendance. Alcohol was flowing, joints were being puffed. When police arrived at Hill-Brodigan’s home after a tip on January 19, they discovered the wild underage party, one teenager having an alcohol-related medical episode on the front lawn, and Roosevelt Elementary teacher Karly Anderson (left), who was drunk as a skunk. They also found alcoholic beverages in coolers. Now police have learned that these parties have been occurring for a while, once or twice a month.

The adults apparently hosting the bash are hardly newly recruited bad apples. Hill-Brodigan has served in various roles in the Brevard public school system, serving as assistant principal at Oak Park Elementary in Titusville and Ocean Breeze Elementary in Indian Harbour Beach, and once being recognized as “Teacher of the Year.” Anderson has taught at Brevard Public Schools for almost two decades. Now the two women are charged with child neglect and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. They are “on leave” at this point.

In his letter to concerned families, Brevard County Superintendent Dr. Mark Rendell said, “I am very troubled by the information that CBPD has shared with the district. We hold our leaders to the highest standards, and if these allegations are true, it’s a complete failure in leadership and a violation of our trust. The district is cooperating fully with police as they investigate this matter and will strive to provide families with full transparency.”

It’s a complete failure of your leadership, buddy, and a violation of the public trust. If this can happen, something is rotten in the ethical culture of the school and the school district. Part of that transparency better include a thorough explanation of how these two women were recruited, vetted, and supervised. Trustworthy professionals don’t usually snap and suddenly start holding drunken orgies or toga parties without there being substantial clues that something is amiss. If there have been many such parties as the reports indicate, someone in authority was engaging in contrived ignorance. Have you ever heard of a hundred teenagers being able to keep a secret?

I don’t understand this story at all. Several of the accounts report that all of the teens were wearing “matching T-shirts.” What the hell? Was this a club? A cult? A coven? Please, tell me what the T-shirts said. My imagination is going places where no one has gone before…

  1. this was on Florida today: smart move, turning off the lights…

Officers responding to the reported house party found a teenager having an alcohol-related medical episode on the front lawn, according to an arrest report.

Brevard County Fire Rescue personnel were required to use their vehicle’s auxiliary lights to render care to the teenager when Hill-Brodigan turned off all outside lights upon their arrival, according to the report. A juvenile was also arrested on a suspected DUI after a nearby traffic stop.

  2. So…how many teachers in the district knew about this? Do you think 20%, 30%, or 50% knew? No one squealed. Not one person said anything about it. Much like the James O’Keefe video subjects, they are involved in all kinds of nefarious deed out in the open, everyone knows about it, but no one ever talks to the public about it. If a little leaks out, everyone denies everything and they chastise you for questioning the intentions or actions of these fine, hardworking people. This isn’t just 2 teachers, this is the entire school and maybe the entire school district. The only way to stop it is to drain the entire swamp.

    • This hilariously self-incriminating disclaimer/boast by The Independent appears at the end of the story:

“Making change happen.” Yep, that’s what journalists are supposed to do.
