Wow…Not For the First Time, President Trump Doesn’t Know What the Hell He’s Talking About…

The topic, fortunately, is baseball, not the economy, foreign policy, or making America great again. Still, it is not a good sign when the leader of the free world spouts off like an ignorant fool professing absolute certainty without any genuine expertise whatsoever. If he does this about baseball…well, you can complete that sentence.

President Trump now demands that Roger Clemens be admitted to the Baseball Hall of Fame despite enough evidence that he used banned steroids late in his career to put him in the Barry Bonds, Manny Ramirez, Sammy Sosa et al. Rogues Gallery of cheaters with great stats who fail the Hall’s character requirements. In a post on Truth Social today, Trump said that he had just played golf with the 11-time All-Star pitcher, and apparently this makes him an authority on The Rocket’s dubious past.

I’m Sorry, But EA Cannot Resist the Saga of the Indignant Rhode Island Prosecutor

The now viral video above pretty much says it all, but the episode warrants special notice.

Special Assistant Attorney General Devon Flanagan, was arrested for trespassing on August 14, and in her many recorded protests, including a variation on the infamous “Do you know who I am?” lament, earned not only social media immortality but probably a lifetime of ridicule. She was arrested for trespassing outside the Clarke Cooke House restaurant in Newport, ludicrously calling out “I’m an AG! I’m an AG!” as well as “You’re going to regret this! You’re going to regret it!” as she put in the back of a police car.

It is believed that alcohol was involved. She also told the officers that they were obligated to turn of their bodycams if a citizen demanded it, which was, as one of the officers sagely observed, “bullshit.” Flanagan has been suspended in the wake of the incident. Presumably she will be fired.

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha called her conduct “inexcusable.” Ya think?

“I’ve got 110 lawyers. She embarrassed all of them,” Neronah said. “It’s just really hard to find and keep capable lawyers, and so I just have to think really carefully about this one. But no question there will be a strong, strong sanction here.”

It’s really hard to find qualified prosecutors who don’t get drunk and make fools of themselves in public? Interesting.

“I’m not sure what she was thinking. Clearly, she was not thinking straight,” Neronha said.  “She’s humiliated herself. Regardless of what happens vis-a-vis her employment with us, she’s going to have a long time coming back from this,” he added. “It’s just really unfortunate.”

Mark this down as just one more chunk taken out of the public’s trust in our justice system. On the bright side, “I’m an AG!” may have some staying power. much like “Let’s go Brandon!” For example…

Stop Making Me Defend Cracker Barrel!

Wow. Just when I thought the Left’s outrage machine had reached new levels of absurdity over an attractive white woman advertising bluejeans by using a very old play on words (Jeff Goldblum uses the same one in “Jurassic Park”),the Right’s outrage machine says “Hold my beer!”

Cracker Barrel stripped its old logo of both its barrel and its “cracker,” and all of a sudden it was Bud Light all over again. The company’s stock even crashed. How the decision could possibly be seen as some kind of kowtow to wokeness is beyond me, and should be beyond everyone who isn’t Woke Deranged.

The old logo was archaic, messy and unattractive. Okay, so the old guy sitting by the barrel looked white, but he was yellow, for heaven’s sake. This isn’t like removing Uncle Ben or Aunt Jemima, or that naughty Native American lass whose Land O’ Lakes box could be rigged to make a wallet peep show. I’d compare the Cracker Barrel change to Kentucky Fried Chicken becoming KFC, and no one freaked out over that, though, admittedly, it transpired before both conservatives and progressives had gone nuts in their distrust of each other.

The one aspect of this nothingcracker that supports the fevered conspiracy theory on the Right is the Cracker Barrel management’s deplorable past record as a pandering, cowardly, principle-free bunch of weenies.

Here is the Ethics Alarms post (from 2020) about the last time this company entered the culture wars. I still haven’t forgiven it.

Psst! Progressives! It’s What You Mean That’s The Problem, Not How You Say It…

This is pretty funny, as Ethics Duncery goes. Third Way calls itself “a national think tank and advocacy organization that champions moderate policy and political ideas,” acting as “a critical bulwark against political extremism.” Right. It’s latest project is an attempt to train their fellow travelers not to “use an awful lot of words and phrases no ordinary person would ever dream of saying.” The feature “Was it Something I Said” continues, “The intent of this language is to include, broaden, empathize, accept, and embrace. The effect of this language is to sound like the extreme, divisive, elitist, and obfuscatory, enforcers of wokeness. To please the few, we have alienated the many—especially on culture issues, where our language sounds superior, haughty and arrogant.”

Smoking guns abound in this thing, beginning with the use of “we” in that sentence above. “Was it Something I Said” begins, “To: All Who Wish to Stop Donald Trump and MAGA.” Not stop a particular policy or project, mind you, just the elected President of the United States and all those who support him, “The Third Way” is in fact the same old way: the Axis has a dearth of rational policy ideas and principles, so hating Trump, treating Republicans as plotting Nazis, and adopting “It Isn’t What It Is” as their primary operating principle (also known as “Sure. we can fool all the people all the time” remains the plan.

The objective here is to employ more soothing, vague and seductive language to accomplish it. Amazing: every time the Left encounters the perils of imposing reality, its reflex solution is to hide the problem by cooking the rhetoric. The public doesn’t like racial and gender discrimination? Hey, let’s call it “diversity, equity and inclusion!” Normal people think amputating the penises of boys who have been confused about their gender by pro-trans indoctrination? No problem! Call it “gender-affirming care”! Most citizens find the idea of open borders repugnant, not to mention stupid? Ah, but if we all call illegal immigrants immigrants or migrants, then we can confuse them completely! I assume you can continue this theme without my assistance.

“In reality, most Democrats do not run or govern on wildly out-of-touch social positions,” claims Third Way. “But voters would be excused to believe we do because of the words that come out of our mouths—words which sound like we are hiding behind unfamiliar phrases to mask extreme intent.”

Yes, this moderate, centrist, Democrat “think tank” doesn’t think promoting illegal immigration, using radical surgery and hormone blockers on children and institutionalizing anti-male, anti-white discrimination qualify as “wildly out of touch.” “[I]f we don’t think more carefully about our language, many in America will be banking on help from Donald Trump and Republicans, because Democratic levers of power will be few and far between,” the introduction to the NewSpeak guide says. Oh, no! Americans might end up trusting a President who has clearly opposed the Axis’s ridiculous, divisive damaging obsessions, which is, after all, why he was elected over the Democrats’ DEI candidate. Translation: “Let’s be smart about this, and hide what we really mean and what we really want to do. You know, like saying Joe Biden was “sharp as a tack,” and calling videos of him wandering vacantly like a zombie “deep fakes.”

You may want to wade into the whole thing, but here are some examples of what you’re facing:

Hopeless, Legitimate or Right-Wing Propaganda? The White House’s Smithsonian Exhibit Hit List

The New York Times reports,

The White House published a list of Smithsonian exhibits, programming and artwork it considered objectionable on Thursday, one week after announcing that eight of the institution’s museums must submit their current wall text and future exhibition plans for a comprehensive review.

The list borrows heavily from a recent article in The Federalist that objected to portrayals at several museums. It argued that the National Museum of American History promoted homosexuality by hanging a pride flag; overemphasized Benjamin Franklin’s relationship to slavery in its programming; and supported open borders by depicting migrants watching fireworks “through an opening in the U.S.-Mexico border wall.”

Other grievances were previously enumerated in an executive order that President Trump authorized in March, which criticized the National Museum of African American History and Culture for a 2020 worksheet that describes aspects of “whiteness” as “hard work,” “individualism” and “the nuclear family.” The worksheet was part of an online educational portal called Talking About Race; once it drew criticism, Lonnie G. Bunch III, the secretary of the Smithsonian, had it removed.

The White House list also featured complaints that were not part of the Federalist article or the president’s executive order. Those include a stop-motion animation at the National Portrait Gallery about Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, a government leader during the coronavirus pandemic, and a series at the African American museum that it says “featured content from hardcore woke activist Ibram X. Kendi.”

About That “Racist” Democrat Sign in Virginia…

I’ve been wrestling with myself over whether to comment on the photo above, which is getting lots of play in the conservative media (especially in the D.C. area) and none at all in the Axis news sources. To begin with, I have been wondering whether the sign is a fake. The alleged message that is causing all the ruckus is on the back of the sign, and something else is on the other side that I can’t quite make out. Odd.

Winsome Sears is the Lieutenant Governor in Virginia and was widely regarded as a rising star of the GOP when the conservative black woman was elected, but she has been regularly thrashed in the polls compared to her Democratic opponent, Rep. Abigail Spanberger, a pro-abortion Pelosi acolyte whose shtick is to pose as a “moderate” since compared to so many of her thoroughly whacked-out woke colleagues, she is one.

Is that message on the back of the sign really racist? It is unquestionably stupid, and proposes a dubious analogy, but is referring to a candidate’s race inherently “racist”?

I tend toward regarding that message as Golden Rule-based, as in “How would you feel if a law prevented you from using public facilities?” I suspect that Sears could deftly explain why the two situations are not equivalent, but by the admittedly low standards of political signs generally, I’m inclined to give that one a pass.

The other issue being raised by the sign in some quarters is the age, gender and race of the woman holding it. Many have commented on how the loudest protesters against the National Guard’s efforts to reduce crime in D.C. are white seniors, and white senior women especially. Why is this? Aging hippies? Is it because seniors are the demographic most likely to watch cable news, and thus are most susceptible to MSNBC brain (and ethics) rot?

Unraveling The Left’s Lawfare Assault On Democracy, (Cont.)

The “lawfare” the Democrats employed against Donald Trump in 2023 and 2024 was a substantial, audacious and damaging breach of all previous political principles, a transparent effort to hold power by using the legal system to eliminate the party’s most powerful adversary. I believe the damage to our system is permanent, much as Democrats eliminated impeachment as an important restraint on the Presidency by using it in such a flagrantly partisan manner in two illicit impeachments. Now there is no longer a taboo against a party using partisan prosecutors to find ways to bobble major political figures using the Soviet “show me the man, and I’ll show you the crime” method. Even though the Democrats failed, in part due to bad cases, in part to incompetent prosecutors, and most of all because of the astounding determination and resilience of their target, Donald Trump, this strategy will become standard operating procedure, and our system will be nastier, uglier, and less functional for it.

Gee, thanks Democrats!

Open Forum: Normalcy Is Just Around the Corner, I Swear

(The first and perhaps the last time I will echo Warren G. Harding…)

I know, I know…for another week, I have failed to get more than two posts (on average) up per day, and even those posts have been shorter and less substantive than usual. A confluence of the many obstacles this persistent infected hematoma in my leg has imposed on my activities and an usually heavy workload in other areas have created the problem, but the leg is getting better….for example, the tips of my toes are no longer purple, and, sitting at my desk just aches rather than causing stabbing pain. Here’s an example of how loused up I am: I haven’t watched an entire Red Sox game in August, something hadn’t happened since I was 10.

Meanwhile, speaking of Boston, when did the city of my birth morph into the Confederacy? Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has been making defiant statements and Bluesky posts (signature significance, by the way) about the city in her charge being “safer” because it refuses to cooperate in enforcing Federal law. Todd Lyons, acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, vowed to “flood the zone” with federal immigration enforcement in response.

Good. I don’t understand how the sanctuary states and cities can be allowed to get away with this return to the “nullification” movement in the South that was a catalyst to the Civil War. I don’t understand the logic of Wu and other Democratic mayors and governors arguing that impeding the enforcement of laws enhances safety. I don’t understand why the Democrats have lashed themselves to the pro-illegal immigration anchor: how can this possibly help the party regain trust and respectability?

As a footnote, Wu amuses me when she boasts about Boston being the “safest major American city.” All of America’s major cities are unacceptably crime-ridden; all of them are governed by radically progressive and woke Democratic mayors. Saying that one of them is the “safest” is like raving about the best episode of “Three’s Company.”

Well, enough from me. This is your space: use it wisely and well.

Oh! One more thing: today I was offered a contribution from a new commenter that read, “Daha enerjik ve canlı bir masaj deneyimi isteyenler için İzmir masöz kızlar iyi bir tercihtir.” Sadly, I did not deem this worthy of admission to the ranks of privileged commenters.

If I Were Not An Ethicist…

I had an occasion to drive downtown to D.C. this morning. You would think, based on what the Axis media is telling us, that the city looks like occupied territory, with armed soldiers menacing pedestrians. In truth, I saw one group of about seven Guardsmen by the Lincoln Memorial, and they were not armed. (I tooted at them and they waved at me.)

But I digress. Once again, I parked on a street, Connecticut Avenue, and once again used a parking station where you punch in how long you are planning on parking, scan a credit card, and get a receipt that you are supposed to place on your dashboard. And once again, the system didn’t work: I paid, but got no receipt.

So I wrote down the time and the amount I paid on a piece of paper with my name and phone number, explaining that the system had malfunctioned, and put that so it was visible through the windshield

I returned to a ticketless car. I have now used this method three times in D.C., all successfully. This also means that the modern parking system has failed for me more often than not; in fact four times out of six attempts. (Once I just took a chance and didn’t post anything.)

Now, if I were not an ethicist, I would be sorely tempted to use my note method without paying the parking fee at all. I can think of many rationalizations for doing so. The D.C. government is incompetent. That parking system stinks. The city deserves to lose money; it also wastes my time as the system forces me to write out long explanations for a situation that isn’t my fault.

But I am an ethicist, so I won’t do that. I won’t…

On Trump’s Smithsonian Mission

The latest freakout by the Trump Deranged and the Axis media is over President Trump’s assault on the woke and often anti-U.S. propaganda that has seeped into the Smithsonian museums over the past decades while conservatives, Republicans and patriots were metaphorically asleep at the switch.

That the Smithsonian had become dominated by curators, scholars and ideologues who genuinely don’t like their nation very much and who wanted to use the museum exhibits to promote an “America is racist, sexist and a blight on civilization” narrative is, I believe, beyond reasonable debate: smoking guns include the original signage for the Enola Gay (portraying the bombing of Hiroshima as a war crime) and the deliberate omission of Clarence Thomas in the National Museum of African American History & Culture.
