The Confederacy Rises Again: LA Country Thinks Federal Law Enforcement Creates “An Emergency”

The progressive/Axis/ Democratic Party/bleeding heart support for illegal immigrants is, I must confess, a mystery to me. The sentiment makes no sense from a basic principles of civilization perspective, nor a legal perspective, a rule of law perspective, a historical perspective, and definitely not an ethical perspective. It is all emotional, as in “How can you punish these poor people for just wanting a better life?,” which reminds me of Woody Allen’s crazy father in “Annie Hall,” who berates his wife for firing their cleaning woman. “She’s colored! She’s been oppressed! She has a right to steal!,” he shouts in a flashback. In 1977, everyone, literally everyone, knew that exchange was a joke. Today, thank to almost 50 years of woke brainwashing, a substantial segment of the population thinks it makes sense. “They have a right to get the benefits of citizenship! They’ve had a tough life! ” or, just as bad, “Ok, but since they came here illegally, they’ve been good! ” Right. How dare we take away from them what they took illegally in the first place, since we didn’t catch them sooner.

The brain lesions that produce such “logic” have so multiplied in California that Los Angeles County voted on yesterday to declare a “state of emergency” over federal immigration raids. That’s right: these people think law enforcement is the equivalent of a hurricane or wildfires. They are insane.

And, it should go without saying, ethically inert.

An emergency declaration, is appropriately used in response to natural disasters. This one will allow the county to provide resources for those who have been affected by the raids—that is, those who are the reasons for the raids, and who have broken immigration laws.

It’s bonkers. County officials explain that now it can provide help for those who have stayed out of work for fear of being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement…because they should be detained. The declaration, which was passed in a 4-to-1 vote by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, will also allow the option of an eviction moratorium and other protections for tenants who might have fallen behind on rent payments because they are avoiding ICE.

The county officials argued that the federal immigration sweeps have produced a climate of fear….among those who should be deported. Good. When one breaks the law, one should be afraid of the consequences. Janice Hahn, a board member who voted in favor of the declaration, said, fatuously, “We have entire families who are destitute because their fathers or mothers were taken from their workplaces and they have no way to pay their rent or put food on the table.” Gee, I guess its a not a good idea to build your life around family members getting away with a crime, then.

Last month, county officials approved around $30 million in rental relief assistance for residents who were affected by wildfires…. or federal immigration raids. Basically the same thing, after all. The board did not provide an estimate for how many residents have been affected by immigration raids or how many might apply for relief in the country’s largest population of undocumented immigrants

Kathryn Barger, the member of the board of supervisors who voted against the declaration, points out that ICE raids did not meet the criteria for an emergency. “Emergency powers exist for crises that pose life and death consequences like wildfires, not as a shortcut for complex policy issues,” she wrote in a statement provided to the news media after the vote. “Stretching emergency powers for federal immigration actions undermines their purpose, invites legal challenges, and circumvents the public process.”

Ya think? The County vote is nothing more nor less than organized defiance of Federal authority and official endorsement of law-breakers over law enforcement. This is what the Obama-Biden illegal and irresponsible embrace of open borders has brought here. It isn’t the I.C.E. raids that are the emergency. It is the warped values that have been infecting American academia, the judiciary, law and public policy.

  1. This current outbreak of insanity brings to mind how during the Obama administration, Maricopa County (Greater Phoenix) sheriff Joe Arpaio started doing illegal immigrant raids at Home Depot parking lots and other likely target rich environments. Whereupon the Obama DOJ came down on Sheriff Joe like a ton of bricks and took him to federal court where he was enjoined from doing any such thing because immigration enforcement is the exclusive domain of the FEDERAL government, NOT local government, much to the delight of all the lefties who didn’t want immigration law enforced. Now, of course, the lefties are enabling local law enforcement’s PREVENTING the federales from enforcing immigration law, which, of course, is the exclusive domain of the federal government. Go figure.

I guess they would say, “Not my federal government.”

These people are absolutely devoid of self-awareness. Among other things.
