A Full “Nelson” For The Democratic Party

The quote, attributed to Oscar Wilde, “One must have a heart of stone to read the death of Little Nell [in Dickens’ “The Old Curiosity Shop”] without laughing” comes to mind, or George Will’s favorite term, “condign justice,” referring to punishment for misconduct that is especially fitting and appreciated by observers. At Ethics Alarm, I signify such delicious and amusing examples of metaphorical boomerangs circling back and breaking the thrower’s face with the mocking laughter of the “The Simpsons'” Nelson Muntz.

Axios reports that the self-inflicted one-two punch of Joe Biden’s epically awful Presidency and his DEI VP, Kamala Harris’s spectacularly incompetent 2024 campaign is still keeping the Democratic Party deep in a hole. Gee, what a surprise: you intentionally place the fate of your party in the hands of an aging and demented political hack who was never that bright to begin with and an inarticulate empty power suit whose sole qualification for high office has been her gender and skin-shade, and for some mysterious reason you end up in political Hell. Who could have seen that coming?

A Morning “Nelson”! Condign Justice For NY A.G. Letitia James

This story has so much delicious irony to it, I’m afraid to look in the mirror for fear that I have literally turned into Nelson Muntz, the “Simpsons” character who mocks everyone else’s misfortunes.

The Federal Housing Finance Agency has referred New York Attorney General Letitia James to the Department of Justice for alleged mortgage fraud. Bill Pulte, director of FHFA alerted U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi in part,“Based on media reports, Ms. Letitia James has, in multiple instances falsified bank documents and property records to acquire government backed assistance and loans and more favorable loan terms…This has potentially included 1) falsifying residence status for a Norfolk, Virginia-based home in order to secure a lower mortgage rate and 2) misrepresenting property descriptions to meet stringent requirements for government backed loans and government assistance.”

You can read the documents here and here. In one case, the Democratic Party hit-woman charged with executing the lawfare against Donald Trump so he couldn’t run for President received a lower mortgage rate by falsely swearing that a home in Norfolk, Virginia would be her “primary residence” when her job as New York’s Attorney General required her to live in that state. In the other, James misrepresented a five-unit property as a four-family unit to receive “a conforming loan through the Freddie Mae/Freddie Mac Form 3033,” which is only available for buildings with four or fewer units. Hilariously, this is the same woman who prosecuted Donald Trump for misleading financial statements, intoning that “No one is above the law.” Perfect!

CBS Faces the Music For Its “60 Minutes” Cheat

CBS, only a month before a Presidential election that was believed to be a toss-up, deliberately used its flagship news magazine show, “60 Minutes,” to throw a lifeline to Kamala Harris. The network was caught red-handed at this, as this admittedly critical coverage clearly shows…

Not long after CBS’s flagrant attempt at election interference, NBC did its own dirty work, deliberately violating the FCC’s Equal Time regulation to allow Kamala Harris the equivalent of a campaign ad on Saturday Night Live just three days before the election.

In response to CBS’s cheat, Trump sued the network last year for $10 billion, “alleging” that “the network”60 Minutes” deceptively edited the featured interview with Harris to help her candidacy, or perhaps not to hurt her candidacy is more accurate, since it hid a typical Harris outbreak of gibberish in response to a straightforward question. The lawsuit alleges this because “60 Minutes” did deceptively edit the interview. There is no non-risible argument that it did not. Ethics Alarms issued two posts about this nauseating example of unethical partisan broadcast journalism, here and here. CBS could have backed up its “It isn’t what it is” defense of the incident by releasing the raw transcript of the Harris interview, but it would not, more smoking gun evidence of its attempted election interference by withholding that smoking gun.

Alec Baldwin Should Have Watched More TV. Or He’s An Idiot. Or Both

An opinion piece by Farhad Manjoo in today’s New York Times begins,

Shortly after a prop gun Alec Baldwin was holding fired a bullet that killed a cinematographer and wounded a director on the set of the movie “Rust,” in October 2021, he told the police in New Mexico that he’d be willing to do whatever they requested, including sitting for an interview at the station. In an interrogation room later that afternoon, detectives began by informing Baldwin of his rights: He had the right to remain silent. Anything he said could be used against him in court. He was free to consult with an attorney; if he could not afford an attorney, one would be appointed for him. And he could stop the interrogation at any point he wished.“My only question is, am I being charged with something?” Baldwin asked. Not at all, the police said. Reading his rights, one detective told him, was “just a formality.”And so, without his attorney present, while the police recorded him, Baldwin talked. And talked. And talked. At that point, Baldwin knew only that the film’s director, Joel Souza, and its cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, had been injured; detectives would inform him at the end of the interrogation that Hutchins had died. Still, for about an hour, Baldwin not only answered detectives’ many questions about the shooting but also offered his own theories about the incident and suggested the next steps the police might pursue in their investigation.

He then says, “Defense lawyers I talked to said Baldwin’s case should serve as a reminder that if you are involved in a serious incident, it’s best not to talk to the police unless you have an attorney present.”

Gee, ya think? How could Baldwin have not known that? How could Manjoo have needed to ask defense lawyers to discover that? How could anyone not know that?
