Unethical Quote of the Day, (Also Stupid): Theater Critic Nuveen Kumar

“But I don’t think it’s necessarily antiwoke to tell an all-white story or to relegate nonwhite characters to the margins, if that’s where they fit the creative intentions.”

Former Washington Post theater critic Naveen Kumar in the paper’s “Whitewashing ‘Wuthering Heights.'”

Oh, well that’s really big of the critic, don’t you think? How generous of him! He is willing to concede that a director might still be regarded as a good person if he or she doesn’t cast actors “of color” (you know, like the critic) to play characters written as white, visualized by the playwright as white, in a story obviously about white people!

Yes, this fatuous, offensive statement came late in an essay that was already obnoxious, with the biased and reductive headline, “Whitewashing ‘Wuthering Heights’.” [Gift link!] The Post post was defending, sort-of -but- not-really, Emerald Fennell’s “Wuthering Heights” film, in which Heathcliffe, Emily Bronte’s hormonal romantic anti-hero, is played…

…by a white actor. Never mind that previous film adaptations have cast Heathcliff as white, notably the classic starring Lawrence Olivier in the role, probably because he was the best actor alive at the time.

Yes, it is true that the ethnicity of Heathcliff has always been a matter of debate: with Bronte describing him as “dark-skinned,” a “gypsy,” and a “little Lascar,” a term for South Asian sailors. The idea is that he is an outsider and at the bottom of the social ladder; that certainly would justify casting a black, Indian or other non-white actor, but certainly doesn’t mean he has to be played that way. (I would not think that casting Heathcliff as Swedish would work, but you never know: I could see one of the Skarsgaard boys pulling it off.)

Ethics Mystery: How Many Of These Disasters Will It Take For Progressives To Realize That Their Woke Delusions Are Just Plain Wrong?

Case study: In 2021, Oregon became the first US state to decriminalize hard drugs like heroin, crack and fentanyl. After all, possession and sales are “victimless crimes,” right? And non-violent, too. Nobody’s hurt when family members, parents, spouses and employees become addicts except the drug-users themselves! Oregon’ brainwashed progressives overwhelmingly voted for Measure 110 in a referendum in November 2020, believing the left wing/ libertarian cant that making the possession and use of narcotics legal would make it easier to get addicts treated.

Just three years later, an Emerson poll shows that 56% of voters want to make the drugs illegal again. Why? I bet you can guess, even though the voters in Oregon couldn’t figure it out since wokeness ate their brains. The addicted are flocking to the state, requiring Oregon to deal with more addicts than it can handle. Under Measure 110, those in possession of the now-legal drugs are issued a ticket that results in a theoretical $100 fine, but the penalty will be lifted once the individual calls a self-help line and seeks treatment. Not surprisingly, the system is a bust. Eugene’s police chief reported that out of 6,000 people cited, fewer than 125 followed through.

Regarding “Woke”

I’ve been meaning to deal with this major example of progressive rhetorical legerdemain for some time, and like so many of my aspirations, it had fallen prey to my short attention span and disorganization. Today AM Golden, in reviewing “Old Indy” or whatever the movie is called, asserted that it wasn’t “woke” but said the meaning of that word was elusive.

It really isn’t. “Woke” began in ebonics (the politically-correct term for careless and defiant bad English embraced by the urban African-American community is apparently now “African-American Vernacular English” or AAVE, yet another example of the Left’s “it isn’t what it is” addiction. AAVE is just poor grammar that makes the speaker sound uneducated) and described someone who had seen the light (Hallelujah!) about racial injustice and how the United States is intrinsically racist. Rev. Wright, Barack Obama’s mentor, was preaching “wokeness” when he told his congregation “God damn America!”

Gradually white progressives appropriated the term and made it more general, so that while Black Lives Matter could claim the mantle of “wokeness” for a while (until its real nature as a Marxist, manipulative scam started dawning on sufficient numbers of observers), “woke” came to mean the enlightened realization that the entire progressive agenda, from abortion on demand to reparations to trans-athletes clobbering biological females in sports to income redistribution to crippling the economy while pretending we are preventing a climate change Armageddon to letting illegal immigrants swarm across our borders without consequences to declaring shop-lifting a non-crime to eliminating voter identity requirements to making “hate speech” a crime.…I can go on like this forever, but I’ll stop now…are all “on the right side of history” and undebatable, correct, good and virtuous, and anyone who dissents is, well,

…what Joe said.
