And the Frontrunner for the 2011 “Eliot Spitzer Award for Outrageous Hypocrisy” is….

Looks like this year's "Spitzie" is already in the bag!

Clark County (Las Vegas) Deputy District Attorney David Schubert!

From the Las Vegas Sun:

“Metro Police said chief Clark County Deputy District Attorney David Schubert was arrested in connection with drug charges Saturday night. Police spokesman Jay Rivera said Schubert was charged with possession of cocaine and booked into the Clark County Detention Center…
Police planned to release more information about Schubert’s arrest on Monday, Rivera said.

“Schubert recently prosecuted the high-profile drug cases involving Paris Hilton and pop singer Bruno Mars.”

Now THAT’s hypocrisy!

  1. Ironic, certainly, but I’m not sure it’s inherently hypocritical. He may, in fact, believe that possession of cocaine should be legal (or de-criminalized), and was just doing his job in those prosecutions. Note that both the high-profile cases you cite resulted in plea bargains resulting in no jail time for either celebrity.

I’m not so naive as to believe there’s a lot of chance you’re wrong about Mr. Schubert, but I think it’s important to note the possibility.

    • The problem is that as a lawyer, and especially as a prosecutor, he has taken an oath to obey the laws, whether he agrees with them or not. A anti-drug drug-user may not be hypocritical if he believes that drug use is bad for society and individuals, but cannot control himself. A drug-using, drug-use prosecuting attorney, however, is. Among other things, he’s obligated to turn himself in.

  2. I think you should have a new page/tab at the top for “Annual Awards”. I know each year you just kind of make up the categories to fit crimes, but I think it would be interesting to have a list of the more permanent ones and the current nominees for each of the recognized categories. I don’t think that would prohibit or limit you from creating special awards at the end of the year, but might help you with tracking in the end.
