“Neither let us be slandered from our duty by false accusations against us, nor frightened from it by menaces of destruction to the Government nor of dungeons to ourselves. Let us have faith that Right makes Might, and in that faith, let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it.”
— Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States, on February 27, 1860 in his Cooper Union Address expounding on the Founders’ beliefs regarding the regulation of slavery.
February 12 is the birthday of America’s most brilliant, bold and eloquent leader, Abraham Lincoln, born this day in 1809. You would hardly know it from the apathy of most of the news media, which is happy in its laziness to defer any honor of the man who saved the Union and ended slavery to “President’s Day,” which is still officially a celebration of George Washington’s birth. No slight against George, but Abe deserves better from us.
Happy Birthday, Abe. The nation can never repay its debt to you, but it can make itself better by striving to meet the aspirations you set for us

Now wait a minute…the media’s apathy? We are about to hit the second day of the continual coverage of Whitney Houston’s death. The media has worked tirelessly to bring forth every personal and salacious detail pertaining to Whitney Houston in an effort to help this nation in it’s greif for this loss. Not to mention, the media’s highlighted coverage of Tony Bennett’s very astute announcement that if all drugs were legalized…Whitney Houston would be alive today.
On second thought…you are right.
Abraham Lincoln does deserve more respect.
And so does Whitney Houston.
Confusing..
Not as much so, however, as Bennett’s non sequitur. How he thinks legalizing drugs would have saved Houston rather than just ensure more like her defied explanation. But then, he left his brain in San Francisco.
I’m sure many people are saddened over the untimely death of Miss Houston, who was a talented performer. But is this wall-to-wall, three day coverage of this event really necessary? No doubt the fact that it occurred during the Grammy proceedings spurred much of this, but the coverage has really gotten out of hand and rather pathetic besides. She deserves respect, not deification. I’m sure she’d agree.
