Ethics Hero: Sergio Consuegra

Hero!

Hero!

The violent confrontation between a group of aggrieved bikers and the driver of a sports utility vehicle (with his family on-board) in Manhattan turned into an ugly incident that left both the driver and one of the cyclists seriously injured.  You can see the disturbing video of the attack—captured on one of the cyclist’s helmetcam—-here. Who precipitated the incident will have to be sorted out in court, but the there is little question that only the intervention of bystanders stopped further injury to the driver and perhaps his family—an inspiring example of witnesses to a wrong stepping in at personal risk to themselves and making a difference. One of the rescuers—there were others, not yet named—was Sergio Consuera.

He was walking to church Sept. 29 when he saw the Range Rover stop in Washington Heights and the obviously angry motorcyclists approach the car. “That moment, I started thinking to myself I’ve got to do something,” Consuegra said. “I know I’m going to be in danger, but I’m going to have to take a chance.” He was certain that the bikers were going to kill the driver, Alexiaen Lien. According to Consuegra, he  confronted the bikers, one of whom appeared to be trying to pull Lien’s wife out of the vehicle, and told them to stop, while crouching down to protect Lien from further beating.

After a tense pause, they did.

They might not have, of course; the Good Samaritan was placing himself at risk, and knew it.

Meanwhile, it is being reported that at least five off-duty New York police officers were among the bikers, witnessed the attack, and did nothing. One of them was apparently working undercover, and thus has a justification for remaining a bystander. The others, however, should also be grateful to Sergio Consuegra. They have blood on their hands now, but without him, there would have been a lot more.

  1. Mr. Consuegra is a very brave man and God bless him for his strength to go up against this evil group! I guess gangs of thugs along with the off duty NYPD officers have found that New York City is one of the “safest” large cities in this country to pull this type of horrific “stunt”. This is a gang and no way to explain nor defend their actions.

    • Very brave indeed.. Among a city of 7 million he is one of the few who dared to help a stranger. NYC is not the place to be if you need a stranger’s help.

          • Did NYC cease to be a hotbed of liberalness? Did it stop being almost unceasingly Democrat?

I thought Democrats were all about helping people, Jj…

Are you telling me they’re only willing to help when it won’t cost them anything personally or inconvenience them?

I’m shocked, shocked I tell you.

        • What a ridiculous statement AM. Let’s question the politics of the attackers too. Were they liberal or conservative? Does it matter? Assholes and criminals cross all political persuasions as do heroes.

        • You’d think that such a liberal paradise would be so much more willing to help someone being attacked by a mob.

          Yeah, you would think.
Esp. with a citizenry so abhorrent to violence and so supportive of a post-racial president in the WH encouraging everyone to get along.

The truth is, now that Giuliani is long gone, the city is descending back into the crime-infested Sh$t Pit it was during the Koch and Dinkens years.
Without Stop and Frisk and (concealed) firearms, the situation is only going to get worse.

They can keep their crime, garbage, dirty snow, corrupt cops, immigrant murderers, tiny drinks and clueless Liberals.

If I want to visit a city I will go to Paris.

    • Virtually every news article misuses the term good Samaritan. Luke 10:29–37. Note 1) victim found after robbers are already long gone. Note 2) robbers strip man of his clothes and belongings, therefore victims worth can no longer be measured by what he wears or carries. Note 3) helping the beaten and robbed man carried no danger to the Samaritan — If you go back to Alexian Lien and Sergio Consuegra on 29th September 2013 — the you will find the exact opposite on all these tree points. Mr Consuegra helps Lien out of an unfavorable situation .. but this has very little to do with what is described in Luke’s Gospel. Alexian Lien does indeed commit 4 felonies before his detainment at the 178th street. Many actions by the motorcyclist are fully justified by ‘detaining a felon for manslaughter in first degree’ as described in NY state Citizens Arrest.

I had some time today to get out on the ‘net and read extensively on this situation.
    Absolutely disgusting.
Every stinking aspect of it, from those committing the crimes, to those who were supposed to be stopping it.

    • “Every stinking aspect…”….perfect description of the city that never sleeps….now we know why! NYPD….may be the real gang of thugs. I may be the lone American who has never had a desire to visit that city. Hope I am never forced to go either as I will be kicking and screaming all the way…

  3. Even worse is that the police were informed of this ‘ride’ in advance (possibly from their undercover agent). They decided to do nothing about it. It is being reported that this is a common occurrence in NYC, but the police claim that there is nothing that they can do about it.
It sounds like the people in NYC need to stand up and vote out their government. They have a government that wanted to regulate the size of their soft drinks, but when it comes to protecting the citizenry from roaming motorcycle gangs, the police just shrug their shoulders?

    • OK, they probably weren’t informed by their undercover officer who wasn’t undercover here. Instead he was taking part in an illegal motorcycle rally in his time off and has been arrested for smashing one of the windows of the Range Rover.
