At 8:46 AM, a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups commercial popped on TV. “Women want like to make it last,” bold type told us. “Men are done in seconds.”
“Typical.”
Who decided that gratuitous sexual innuendo is inherently hilarious and appropriate in every context, at every moment? Well, no one yet. Again, it is the boors in ad agencies and clods in corporate boardrooms who are pushing us down this uncivil, impolite, needlessly sleazy path. We can remind them that there are limits dictated by taste and decorum, or we can just shrug it off, part of the irreversible ratchet process called “defining deviancy down.”
Of course, we can’t expect advertisers to display respect to their audiences if their audiences prove they deserve none.
How long do you think it will be before we see a Reese’s ad featuring a kinky couple mid-sexual romp, and the naked male points to his erect penis, crying, “Hey! You got peanut butter on my chocolate sauce!” Then his partner, after, ah, checking it out, cries, “Mmmmm! But it tastes great!”
At this rate, not long at all.
All of that territory has already been explored, exploited and dominated: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Zpm4jtmcho
The positive side is that once deviancy has defined itself down definitively, there will be nowhere except up to go…
Why don’t you talk about the Trans Pacific Partnership and what an Ethics disaster that is, instead of this meaningless drivel? Pour Favor??
Now, you know the answer to that, bbh. Never an either/or proposition, and little unethical acorns into might unethical oaks grow.
The other answers are…
1) The thing isn’t settled yet.
2) The Obama administration’s absolute violation of its transparency pledge has been flogged here a lot, and that’s part of the TPP problem.
3) It’s a monster, and the objections to it involve policy and ideology, not ethics.
4) The main opponents to it include leftists, crooks and incompetents, like Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, John Conyers, Alan Grayson, Charles Rangel,Jim McDermot and Lloyd Doggett. I know its pure cognitive dissonance, but if anything that crew advocated had validity, it would be a miracle.
5) I don’t understand trade well enough to have an independent opinion, and I don’t have the time to get educated.
Dirty candy ads, however, I can understand.
1) it’s the WAY its being settled. In secret, without any oversight or imput by we the people – because they know if it is discussed in public the American people will reject a shit deal. That’s ethical? It also proves that us “Conspiracy Theorists” are right.
2) it’s not even on the NEWS. The administration is just a piece of the deception. The news keeps us distracted with Bread, Circus, and Blog posts about porno candy commercials that are meaningless. Are you afraid to piss off the boys at your country club, be ostracized or lose your monthly payoff from some Dark Money teat by talking about this, or are you under direct orders? Just wondering.
3) uh, Bullshit, and this is an amazing statement coming from someone who is the author of an ‘Ethics Blog’. Policy and Ideology are formed with Ethics in mind – it shape the whole ‘Thought Structure® of how they are implemented and enforced. If you don’t use Ethics to form your policy and ideologies, its just fine? Are you bent over like Jim Carey and moving your asscheeks while you make such an asinine statement?
4) nice broad brush generalization, and does not justify any lengthy response from me. Your response lacks any character, knowledge, empathy or altruism for the people of this country or those who still care for their well being… We are all flawed, but we are all God’s creatures. Just because we aren’t participating in the Raping and Pillaging of this planet at any price doesn’t spell “Success” to me. “Incompetence” equals those who are so good at Evil and Dominating the Earth and killing it for all Earthlings – of which we are a part of, including krill, earthworms, birds and rhinos – and losing their souls in the process.
5) Common Dreams is a good place to start – it’s called Common Dreams because we’re all connected and we have much in common, not division.

You’re floundering. Get it together and focus your energy on the rising tide that raises all boats, not on what is the nickel and dime, nit-picky flim flam culture battles, Wedge issues that so called “conservatives” in name only are getting their asses handed to them consistently. Point of reference – “Your” side has started to abandon all opposition to the Affordable Care Act and are even implementing it within their own states –

because they want the benefits for themselves, even though it is a crap deal, it’s better than the bottom of the barrel situation we had before it was passed – the good it does far outweighs the bad.
Don’t sell your soul Jack – but if you already did, I hope it was worth it. Guess what – it never is.

Treaties are transparent when they have to be approved by Congress—that’s how the system works, and the only way it can work.

Don’t be idiotic as well as insulting. I don’t render opinions on things I don’t have sufficient knowledge about to analyze. There are plenty of things I do have such knowledge on. How exactly would news broadcast cover this in 5 minutes? The major newspapers have written about it. Until there is a final version in writing, there’s nothing to know.

Ideology isn’t ethics. Ideologues just presume that it is. Competing interests are only ethics matters if one interest is unequivocally right and the other isn’t, or if that question is subject to fair and objective analysis. It is almost impossible to conduct fair ethical analysis when competing groups declare that only their interests are “right.”

See above. The identities of the advocates are what tell me that this is ideology, not ethics. I don’t trust any one of those politicians, all for different reasons. You are sincere, they aren’t. When there are hundreds of ethics topics to write about, the individuals who are aligned in favor or against a measure is a useful tool, not the only one, but a useful one, to help me decide what makes the cut. I find socialism to be an unethical ideology because it’s bad for society, justice, and human advancement. These are mostly socialists at best—the ones who aren’t crooks, like Rangel and Conyers. They might be right on the stopped clock principle, but I really don’t have time to explore that faint possibility.

Ridiculous and embarrassing. You are making a play for that absurd list of Communist/totalitarian talking points, a living wage regardless of skill or labor, phony equality in gender salaries, wacko environmental radicalism, open borders, government engineered economies, banned capitalism—sorry. Pure ideology—and ideology that has been a proven failure in very setting— and not ethics. In some cases, the antithesis of ethics.
You were better off when it was spammed.
Did you censor my response to your 5 part answer Jack?
Nope! I don’t even know what you’re referring to. I don’t censor any responses, unless I ban the responder, and usually not even that.
Just checked, and indeed it got spammed because of the links. I have no idea why some coments with links get through and some don’t.
I was going to write “Don’t get paranoid on me” but in your case that’s a silly thing to say…
Well, they COULD always go back to the old joke about how Mr. Goodbar met Baby Ruth and started squeezing her Almond Joys… Oh, Henry!
Good god…how old ARE you?
Not as old as you (haha).
You should write commercials for Hershey, I think that last idea might fly!
I’d be great at writing ads. I decided to aim higher.
Sorry, Jack. You’re headed down a rocky road. As long as they can milk the mounds of chocolate from Fifth Avenue all the way to Mars, they won’t let the chunky pieces slip twix their butterfingers and you won’t get a peep out of their customers: it’s all about payday, y’know.
Ahm enjoying your Bounty-ful and Krackle-ing good word play, which does not Nestlesarily alter my numero Uno point: in trying to Skor points with the vulgar, these companies are seeking cheap Snickers, and accomplishing Zero of cultural worth.
(I can’t believe you missed Snickers.)
BlameBlakeheart will protest that I’m wasting time and not engaging the Bilateral Commission and the Illuminati any minute now…
Didn’t miss the snickers — somewhere, secretly, BB is chortling in spite of himself.
Oh, great–now I feel like I’m solving ENIGMA..
Ha ha – you are correct. I just kicked you in the ass – get your s**t together, Nero.
Refill that prescription, now…
(claps hand over mouth to avoid a joke about the Hershey Highway)
So glad my favorite candy bar is a Zero.
No controversy, just yummy flavor.
You know we guys ARE all proving here that we ARE done in seconds.
Not at all, lucky. It’s just that women know that chocolate is a health food and thus should be taken slowly so as to aid digestion.
I think a bigger picture here is that the current comedians have almost universally embraced it. They have created the situation that any humor that doesn’t have a sexual or racial angle is considered ‘corny’. The comedy business has been falling over itself trying to be raunchier than the last person, just like Hollywood has been falling over itself trying to make each reboot ‘grittier’ than the last one. I am predicting that all movies next year will be in black and white (each successive reboot into grittiness results in a loss of at least 1 color).
