I’ll let Dion set the mood first…
Now my updated version, in its own way even sadder than the original. (You can sing along, if you like…)
Does anybody here care ’bout influence peddling?
Can you tell me why it’s wrong?
She got a lot of money
And it sure looks like quid pro quo
But Hillary’s prospects stay strong.
***
Anybody here care ’bout conflicts of interest?
Can you tell me why they’re wrong?
George gave a lot of money,
To Hillary’s foundation
(He’s been a supporter all along.)
***
Anybody here care ’bout lying and cheating?
Do you think that they’re wrong?
The quarterback messed with
The balls that he scored with
And still is cheered by the throng.
***
Should we admire the values they stand for?
Won’t their lies corrupt it all for you and me?
And society
Some day soon, if we don’t make them sorry…
***
Everybody here see our old friend Bubba?
(I can’t stop my rising gorge)
As I watch him walkin,’ and laughin’ at all of us…
With Hillary, Brady and George.
Best I’ve seen lately, Jack! VERY well done! And so true.
You really don’t like Tom Brady, do you Jack?! (heh-heh)
Ah, there will be creative life after the theater closes down! Now to find a composer ….
I think there already was one…
I meant for the NEW ones you’re going to write the lyrics for.
I was going to counter with a parody of For What It’s Worth, but the original is still good for today’s politics – change ‘gun’ in the first stanza to ‘mike’, lose the ‘young’ in the second stanza (scans better), and change ‘our’ in the third stanza to ‘my’ for clarity.
Hmm, maybe some Dylan. The Times They Are Corrupting is too easy, one for Hillary:
Perhaps it’s the color of the sun cut flat
And covering the crossroads I’m standing at
Or maybe it’s the weather or something like that
But bribery’s been on my mind.
I don’t mean trouble, please don’t put me down or get upset
I am not questioning or saying, “how could you forget”
I’m sure there’s an explanation for every cent, but yet
Bribery’s been on my mind.
Although your explanation’s hazy and makes my thoughts confused
I’m sure the Clinton Foundation money was all most properly used
And I’m sure despite appearances that your office never was abused
But bribery’s just on my mind.
I am not asking you for an on-the-record quote
Please understand me, there’s no one worthy of my vote
I’m just breathing to myself, pretending that your smirk is not a gloat
For bribery’s been on my mind.
When you wake up in the morning and look inside your mirror
You know the press won’t question you, you taught them who to fear,
I’d just be curious to know how you keep your conscience clear
And keep straight who paid for what in your mind.
As Jimmy Durante said, wrote and sang, “you gotta start off each day with a song…”
