World traveling married couple Joseph Dasilva, 38, and Travis Dasilva think it’s’ cute and funny to take what they call “belfies,” as in “below-the-belt selfies” at historical, religious and cultural sites in other nations. They then post the disrespectful photos to Instagram. Above the witty pair is shown at Bangkok’s Wat Arun, or Temple of the Dawn, baring their asses. Unfortunately, such conduct is illegal in Thailand. The Dasilvas were arrested at the Bangkok airport, fined 5,000 baht ( about$154) each, and will be facing charges of public indecency.
Writes Professor Turley, quite correctly:
So these two travel the world showing utter contempt for historic and cultural sites, then when they get into trouble, the United States spends money and time to try to secure their release from their well-deserved arrests….It remains a mystery why anyone over the age of 4 would find this “Traveling Butts” theme to be funny. Yet, their account had more than 14,000 followers before it was deleted. I find that following far more unsettling than the fact that two adults would engage in this type of offensive conduct.
What do you want to bet that these two boors loudly condemn the President for projecting a poor image of the U.S. abroad?
I said that electing Trump would turn us into a nation of assholes, and I was right! Literally!
Turley’s mystery is easily solved: he needs to get out more. Read the comments on most political websites. Read what people write on social media. There are a lot more than 14,000 juvenile, sub-average IQ, boorish, uncivil creeps out there like the Dasilvas.
What I find unsettling, to use the professor’s term, is that so many American never absorbed the simplest, most obvious rule of etiquette: don’t misbehave and embarrass your family, nation and species when you are a guest.

All this can all be explained with this simple phrase Beavis and Butt-Head
Zoltar:
Except they were clever, and their satire smart.
I saw this on Professor Turley’s blog.

I left this comment.
Rudy Martinez is a truly disgusting human being, his racist promotion of “white” genocide should be considered a real threat in the same way that some KKK members threats should be considered real. Allow these kind of people any kind of real power and watch out!
I dare them to pull that stunt outside the Grand Mosque in Mecca. They’d find out a whole new meaning to the phrase “give head”.
Maybe this is okay and cute if you’re a gay guy?
Can the government sue those two cute (and especially cutely begluted!) assholes, to collect costs for securing their release? I would be…disappointed…if they were not held liable for at least as much as they have contributed to anyone’s election campaign in the past two years…
I will have to research this couple some more. If I can find a pic of one or both of them being grabbed on their shapely, naked glutes, I will replace my gravatar with it. I’ll just call it soft core mockery-and-vengeance porn. Because it’s already established that Joseph and Travis are two citizens of a Nation of Assholes. So we might as well celebrate that.
Damn it. Someone beat me for the pointer credit. I need to be faster on the draw.
Saw that. I’m still grateful for all tips, and you’ve had some great ones.
Jack’s incredibly generous and gracious in acknowledging pointers. It’s not as if he doesn’t read and see things himself.
This story calls to mind the recent story of the UCLA basketball players offered an extended stay in China for forgetting to pay for their items. It should be obvious, and should go without having to be said, that when you go to another country, you behave according to the rules, laws, customs, and culture of that country. If you know that spitting is an offense in Shanghai, then you don’t spit; or if you do, you should expect the consequences. Likewise, you don’t shoplift in China (or anywhere else, for that matter – even your home country). Perhaps the flip side of that is, that if you simply must violate the laws of the nation of which you are a guest, you should expect to treated according to those laws, if not more harshly as that nation would want to send a message to other would-be scofflaws that such behavior is unacceptable. So, if you simply must display private parts for that ever-so-important selfie, you should expect bad and unpleasant things to happen to you, no matter how inspired your photo campaign is.
But John, show compassion, please:
Those UCLA athletes in China were just undocumented shoppers!
A prediction of a future DT Tweet:
“Personally called Thai PM(good guy). Two NOT VERY grateful guys headed home. Maybe should have left them?”
One can only hope that they will get the full seven years (the max for their crime)
By the time they get out no one will be interested in seeing their glutes.
They won’t. The US will get them out.
Why do you have to show a conservative bias with all your posts:
“What do you want to bet that these two boors loudly condemn the President for projecting a poor image of the U.S. abroad?”
The issue has nothing to do with Trump. You and I and many liberals are in agreement that these guys deserve to be arrested.
Also, it’s not that much of a moral panic for society as you make it out to be considering instagram did the sensible thing and deleted their accounts
Try to keep up. The theme here since August of 2015 has been that Trump’s influence would be/is to make the country, especially the younger members more prone to be rude, uncivil and crude. The issue of incivility and boorishness has everything to do with Trump, and his supposed foes are emulating and even surpassing him rather than showing a better way.
How is that assessment a conservative bias at work? It’s not. These are two gay men in a same sex marriage, and the odds are about a million to one that they loathe Trump, deride his style and boorishness, and are emulating his values anyway.
Sorry if this is over your head, but that was the point, and it’s not a conservative one.
