WOW! New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Scores TWO “Ethics Dunce” Designations In A Single Day!

Yes, it appears that the freshman New York House member bids fair to become the Babe Ruth of Ethics Dunces, blowing away the previous record-holder for Ethics Dunce designations, Bill Clinton, and all other contenders. This is her second Ethics Dunce in a single day, something no other public figure has ever accomplished. Her first is here.

On December 22, the media darling issued  successive tweets, signaling her virtue,

Next time we have a gov shutdown, Congressional salaries should be furloughed as well. It’s completely unacceptable that members of Congress can force a government shutdown on partisan lines & then have Congressional salaries exempt from that decision….(Spoiler alert: most members of Congress are already wealthy!) Speaking as a working class member-elect, I think it’s only fair. It would also cause members who actually depend on their salary to think twice about leadership and take a shutdown vote more seriously.
Five N.Y. members of Congress are giving up their salaries until the government re-opens: U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-NY-13); U.S. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY-18); U.S. Rep. Max Rose (D-NY-11), who will donate any pay during the time; U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY-01); and U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY-21). So has U.S. Rep. Dr. Mark Green (R-TN), who sent a letter U.S. House of Representative’s Chief Administrative Officer, Philip Kiko, requesting his salary be suspended until a deal is reached and the partial government shutdown ends, as The Tennessee Star reported. Green voted to fund the border wall.Ocasio-Cortez? She has not refused her paycheck. The New York Post reported on Thursday that Oscasio-Cortez ran away when asked about her salary:

“I’ve gotta run!” Ocasio-Cortez told The Post when asked the question Thursday on Capitol Hill.

The Post also said Ocasio-Cortez’s spokesman failed to respond to numerous emails, texts and calls about the matter. The Hill reported that 37 lawmakers in Congress, both Republicans and Democrats,  have refused salaries or are donating their pay to charities. Ocasio-Cortez’s name was not on the list.

How awkward!

This, of course, is rank stupidity as well as real hypocrisy, the concept that I pointed out in the previous post that Ocasio-Cortez does not comprehend. A public figure cannot make a sweeping statement like she did about “completely unacceptable behavior” and then engage in exactly that behavior once her integrity was  on the line. At least, a public figure  cannot do this unless she wants to be recognized as a posturing, insincere, untrustworthy and dishonest phony who can’t keep her feet out of her mouth.

Someone should explain to AOC that while it is true that you can fool some of the people all of the time, you won’t fool anyone behaving like thus.

Two more notes:

1. Nancy Pelosi had an estimated net worth of $100,643,521 in 2015, and surely has more now. She’s taking her salary.

2. President Trump doesn’t take a salary at all.

  1. ”A public figure cannot make a sweeping statement like she did about ‘completely unacceptable behavior’ and then engage in exactly that behavior once her integrity was on the line.”

Taking into account what I suspect are the concerns AND the average attention span of her supporters, perhaps she can.

    • Actually Paul it may be more like how progressives advocate for higher tax rates so that we can be compassionate toward the less fortunate and provide them that which we take for granted as long as the tax increase only affects those at the “tippy top”.

      • “as long as the tax increase only affects those at the ‘tippy top’.”

Since the passing of my Dear FIL nearly two years ago, I remain the lone Conservative in my extended family.

To a one, the rest of ’em are in favor of higher taxes…so long as they’re not affected.

Over time, I’ve advised them on prudent/legal tax avoidance, advice they’ve unquestioningly accepted.

Alerting them that both the Federal Government, and their State of Domicile, accept voluntary contributions?

        Not so much…

  2. “Let’s play two!” –Ernie Banks?

    “Double your pleasure,
    Double your fun…?”

I think the correct term for this accomplishment is “Winning the Ethics Dunce quiniela.”

      • ”There’s still time for her to win the trifecta!”

        Plentya time;

The talented Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, (per DNC chair Tommy Perez the future of the democrat party) has a 60 Minutes gig tonight.

When a teaser came on earlier, I informed my lovely and long suffering wife (a career Lefty), in no uncertain terms, that I saw as her epically bespawling imbecile.

She replied: “you mean like Righty’s Sarah Palin?”

After sucking wind from a direct hit, I stammered that, to her credit, Palin actually had elected executive experience.

Not only that, but she’d gill-netted salmon in the North Pacific. I spent a summer on a halibut schooner that served as a salmon tender based out of Kodiak, AK and came away knowing that anyone that’s done that has some serious schmaltz!

Allie from the block? Not so much.

        • I think Michele Bachmann would be a better far-right comparison. Astonishingly ignorant yet passionate enough to appease the base, and a face that’s a bit too expressive, making for some awkward photo moments.

            • I think people are going to need to stop focusing on Occasio-Cortez as ignorant or stupid. She went to a high school that boasts 95%+ pass rates at level 3 or above on all NY State Regents exams except history. Most NYC public schools are at 60-70% levels. She went to Boston University and either double majored in International Relations and Economics or majored in International Relations with a minor in Economics (sources differ). She graduated cum laude. She is among the elite graduates of her generation. She did well in one of the best high schools in the country surrounded by the 1%. She graduated with honors from one of the premiere universities in this country. She is one of the best of the best. When I complain about today’s public education system, maybe now you understand what I mean. When I complain about the competency problem in this country, maybe now you understand what I mean. You aren’t going to get much better than AOC in her generation. She is the face of the people who will be running the government, the water systems, designing and building the bridges and roads, etc.

              • Yes. But she’s stupid nonetheless. I’m sure her education had a role in retarding her progress, but she’ reckless, irresponsible and lacks self awareness and critical thought skills. “Well educated” and “stupid” are not mutually exclusive, as you know.

          • I will say that Bachmann lambasted Chris Matthews with a pitch-perfect rejoinder during the 2010 mid-term Lefty shellacking, complete with corroborating signage behind her:

“I imagine that thrill is probably not so tingly on your leg anymore.”

    • Probably, but I am convinced Trump’s tweets are strategic. I noticed that he tended to do controversial or important things right after an inflammatory tweet or action. I think he uses them as a smokescreen to focus media attention towards the tweet while they ignore something important he is doing. i noticed some major deals done while the press was focused on the Jim Acosta affair, for example. I know he was working on the China trade deal, he was making waves in Europe, but I can’t remember exactly what and I can’t find the reporting about it because it was all focused on Acosta.

        • It is reported that the average wealth in the town where she grew up is $1.2 million/year. The average person she grew up with is 20x richer than the average US family. In Texas, you can be in the top 1% with an income of $440,000/year. In my state, it is $300,000/year. In New York, it is $550,000/year. Her town approximated the wealth of the 1% in New York. There is no way you can represent this as ‘working class’.

  3. It is just kind of shocking how much of Nancy Pelosi’s wealth comes from the 8 IPO’s she was allowed to be a part of. According to one source, $29 million of that comes from rental property and the rest from investments. For example, she was allowed to be part of a VISA IPO while credit card regulations were being considered in Congress. Insider trading was not illegal for Congress members until 2012.
