It is amazing to me that so many commentators,elected officials and Facebook demagogues insist on denying both the fact and the significance of the fact that the plots to remove President Trump from office began the second he was elected, thus establishing the dishonest and illegitimate nature of everything that was to come. This is gaslighting. Fortunately there is Rep. Al Green of Texas, who isn’t the brightest bulb on the impeachment tree but is at least refreshingly candid, I suspect because he sees nothing wrong with trying to reverse an election that was determined by racists, misogynists and idiots.

Green already handed a brightly wrapped gift to those who accurately maintain that whatever the virtues and deficits of the President, the Democratic effort to remove him “by any means possible” is an abuse of the Constitution and destructive to the stability of the republic. That gift was his guileless statement, “I’m concerned that if we don’t impeach this president, he will get reelected.” Green has also said  that the House may continue to impeach Trump after he is acquitted by the Senate and if he is re-elected. But Al wasn’t through yet, and for this we should be grateful.

MSNBC host Chris Hayes, who resides on the Rachel Maddow Channel that has dedicated itself to assisting the Democrats in their desperate soft coup, tried to lead Green to a revision of his previous smoking coup-gun  statements. Hayes said,

“Political expediency and insincerity — those are two charges that have been leveled against Democrats during this entire affair, particularly since September when the formal impeachment inquiry started, and you play a starring role in those charges. The argument goes like this of House Republicans and Trump and his allies: the Democrats wanted to impeach Donald Trump from day one, they cast about looking for a set of facts that they could plausibly use to do it, and all of it was pretextual and reverse-engineered to get to this point, and Exhibit One: Congressman Al Green, who [has] been calling for the man’s impeachment for two years now. What’s your response to that charge?”

This is known in the biz as a soft-ball question, presenting a guest with an opportunity to employ a previously crafted talking point. Al, however, has too much integrity, or not enough common sense, to play Hayes’ game. He answered,

“Well, the genesis of impeachment, to be very candid with you, was when the President was running for office and he had members of his own party to talk about his unfitness to hold office. . . So the president didn’t have the luxury of persons from his party having been on his side as it were throughout this entire ordeal.”

Exactly. The “resistance,” Democrats and the mainstream media wanted to remove Trump because they had determined that he wasn’t “fit to be President,” although determining who is fit is entirely the domain of voters, and has always been determined by the Presidential election, not how positive the losers are that the voters made a mistake. Al clearly doesn’t understand this, or how wrong, unethical and anti-Democratic his belief to the contrary is.  Most of his colleagues, the smarter ones anyway, probably do know their theory is wrong, but are betting that enough members of the public are either blinded by partisan hate or have the civic literacy of Alyssa Milano.
