The Vital Concept Of Culture, Part I: Ignore It At Civilization’s Peril

Its is amazing to me how dismissive many supposedly astute people are regarding the importance of a single, strong and accepted culture to any group or organization, large or small. Even though toxic culture-based catastrophes occur at a  constant rate, the message never seems to get through sufficiently for metaphorical lightbulbs to switch on in millions of brains illuminating the thought, “Ah! Of course! Consistent, proven  values and common belief systems plus the societal enforcement of them are essential to our nation’s success, coherence and survival!”  It is amazing.

The unethical, ruthless, quid pro quo culture of Hollywood creates Harvey Weinstein, everybody makes inspiring speeches,, and  yet the core lesson that he was a predictable product of a industry sick culture never seems to sink it. It’s men’s fault. It’s a failure to believe accusers. No, it’s a failure to give proper priority to building and maintaining an ethical and healthy culture.

Baseball’s Houston Astros suddenly are found to have permitted widespread cheating by electronic sign-stealing, and their manager and general manager are fired for not detecting and stopping the problem.  However, the team had already indicated that it was working in a self-engineered “ends justify the means” culture when, in need of a relief pitcher, it signed one who was facing a trial for domestic violence even as the Astros had announced a “no tolerance” policy toward that very same activity.  The sign-stealing wasn’t the scandal; the gradual acceptance and nurturing of a corrupt culture was the scandal.

There are many other examples, but this an introduction, after all.

The point is that without a single, ethical, rational and powerful culture, the result is inevitably chaos, anarchy and disaster. Yet the effort to embrace a national culture today is being  smeared as akin to extreme nationalism, pushing culture down the cognitive dissonance scale. Yale University has just announced that it it will stop teaching its famous survey course, “Introduction to Art History: Renaissance to the Present.” because it presents too much art created by white males. This is a gratuitous kick to the groin of our culture, which was largely constructed by the wisdom and perspective of white males (YALE MED SCHOOL TO STOP TEACHING MEDICINE DISCOVERED BY WHITE MALES, quoth the Babylon Bee in a fair analogy). If Yale doesn’t comprehend the importance of maintaining our culture,  what chance do ordinary intellects  have? Allowing a healthy culture to rot is a far more certain path to destruction than ignoring global warming.

Look at what has happened in Great Britain. David Greenfield writes about a recent report on the sex-grooming Muslim  gangs of Manchester. He says in part,

The report chronicles how [an effort to stop the abuse of girls and young women] was launched and then scuttled…despite identifying 97 suspects and 57 victims. The victims were, “mostly white girls aged between 12 and 16”, and the perpetrators were, “mostly men of ‘Asian heritage’”. By ‘Asian’, the report means “predominantly Pakistani men” though at least one of the perpetrators was apparently Tunisian.

…the anonymous cop responsible for some of the most revealing quotes in the report, said, “What had a massive input was the offending target group were predominantly Asian males and we were told to try and get other ethnicities.”

…A meeting at Greater Manchester Police headquarters “acknowledged that the enquiry was sensitive due to the involvement of Asian men” and worried over “the incitement of racial hatred.” There were concerns about “the damaged relations following Operation Zoological” … police raids targeting Iraqi refugees involved in an alleged Al Qaeda plot to bomb a soccer stadium in Manchester. Some in the GMP didn’t see the point to stopping the rape of young girls because of cultural differences.

“There was an educational issue. Asian males didn’t understand that it was wrong, and the girls were not quite there. They were difficult groups to deal with. We can’t enforce our way out of the problem,” [the anonymous cop] said. And so they didn’t.

More young girls and women were raped. Some of the perpetrators were later arrested. The full scope of the abuse and the cover-up will never be known….

The Muslim sex grooming gangs in South Manchester targeted girls from broken families who were taken to care homes. This was not accident or chance. As the report notes, the “offenders understood that a specific children’s home in Manchester was used as an emergency placement unit for children entering the care system and this maintained a steady supply of victims.” And the Muslim sex groomers made sure to be on hand and ready so that the “children were befriended as soon as they arrived.”

These were some of the same tactics used by Muslim sex grooming gangs in [other cities.].. It’s an angle that the authorities have shown no interest in following up because of its potentially explosive nature….The investigation of Muslim sex grooming gangs was too likely to offend the wrong people. And the behavior of the Muslim pedophiles, who abused young girls and addicted them to drugs, was attributed to cultural differences….

Muslim sex grooming gangs, like drugs or prostitution, are too widespread to be enforced out of existence because, like college students and pot, the culture doesn’t accept that they are wrong.

The police did nothing because these were not isolated crimes by criminals, but clashes of morals and values between two communities, one of which does not believe that child rape is wrong because its sacred texts tell it that Mohammed married Aisha and consummated his marriage when she was 9. There are nearly 2 million child marriages in Pakistan. The notion that a woman’s consent to sexual relations matters is an utterly foreign concept in a culture where unaccompanied women are fair game.

The child rapists did not believe that their actions were wrong under Islamic law. And they weren’t.

The Manchester City Council and the GMP just accepted this reality as they have accepted it so often. They buried the minutes, shut down the investigation, and walked away from the screams of the girls.

They did it for multiculturalism, integration, and community relations. They did it for social justice.

This is what happens when a culture isn’t protected. Ethics evaporates; coherence dies. There can’t be alternative versions of right and wrong. Multiculturalism is societal suicide.

Why is this so difficult for so many to understand?

  1. Because any criticism of Muslims is racist and because young girls are just going to have to get used to seeing penises…until they grow up and are confronted by Harvey Weinstein and Louis CK.

    • I can’t believe the people in Rotherham are such idiots. Incredible. What is it about legal vs. illegal that they don’t understand. What is it about the difference between the U.K. and Pakistan that they don’t understand. I thought they were just chickenshits, I didn’t realize they were not prosecuting because the perps didn’t know what they were doing was illegal. Can anyone say “ignorance of the law is no excuse?” I guess not. This is infuriating.

  2. There’s a certain “you reap what you sow” in all of this. Western Civilization has spent the last few centuries slowly jettisoning classic understanding of morals and culture while embracing relativism, in which no one can absolutely say anything is right or wrong. From this new viewpoint of tolerance, we’ve bred a culture in which no one’s “truth” can be better than anyone else’s, and anyone who claims to know “truth” is a bigot. This opens the door to the idea of multiculturalism, where we celebrate this plurality of opinions because we want to show how good we are by accepting everyone else’s “truths”.

But what ultimately underlies this progression from classic values to utter chaos? I would posit that it is the ever-present temptation to redefine as “good” everything that “I want”. It is the grasping of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. All throughout history, we’ve undoubtedly had rationalizations for bad behavior. If someone says what we’re doing is wrong, we need to have an excuse that makes it not wrong. What the relativism of the modern age gives us is the perfect cover for all our immoral actions. I get to define what is right, because if you dare say what I’m doing is wrong, I barely have to defend myself. “That may be true for you, but it isn’t for me.” Or I can just accuse you of being a hater and walk away feeling justified.

Concerns over societal cohesion take a back seat in this model because the self is so exalted. If this drive is as I described above, then it is all about getting what I want. It is the id and the ego grasping and clinging, with no room for the superego, and almost no room for anything that might make me feel guilty. And the effects are predictable. We start fragmenting, beginning with the divide between those who hold to an absolute truth, and those who don’t. Those who don’t start splitting into their camps based upon their myriad disagreements and priorities. No, society can’t survive, but who cares, as long as I get what I want when I want it? The only reason to care about society is if society can be coerced into giving me what I want.

And as note, I have all these thoughts not solely from observing what’s going on around us, but by observing my own temptations and my desire to always think about myself and justify my wrongdoings. In fact, I might be projecting onto everyone else my internal struggles.

    • I think it’s the left’s desire for control, Ryan. For example, Jeremy Corbyn is an anti-Semite to get the Muslim vote in the U.K. Plain and simple.

      • Other Bill,

I think that still fits into my thesis. I want power because if I have power, I can do what I want. Maybe even better, I can reshape the world around me into the way I want it to be.

My wife keeps asking me, when confronting some of these crazy situations, what I would do if I were supreme dictator of the world, and that fantasy is very tantalizing. Some people think they can achieve it, though, which is scary. Most people though just want a supreme dictator to do the rearranging of reality for them.

      • I’ve been skulking in the shadows… I have wanted to respond on so many posts, but I haven’t had a great deal of time. I’ve been promoted to supervisor of my department, but I still have all the duties I was doing beforehand. It has been crazy.

    • Ryan, thanks for pulling together the effects of mis-culturalizing: philosophical, sociological and psychological. Project away!

  3. I think this case is very simple, Ryan. The left wants control. Jeremy Corbyn is an anti-Semite in order to get Muslim votes for Labour.

(I may be posting this more than once. If so, sorry.)

  4. This is why monocultural societal structures fail when they are too polite to say to others, this our way that has worked for decades or centuries or even a millennium, so please pay attention and do as we do or you be shown the door. Truly this is what allowed socialized health care to work well in some places and kept the tragedy of the commons at bay. Everyone knew about cultural expectations and the consequences of not meeting them.

It is important to note if Western Europeans were flooding into Riyadh a similar issue would be occurring…assuming the Saudis would also be too polite to offer guidance to their newest subjects of the kingdom.

Debasing one’s culture invites confusion, corrosion, and conflict.

    • I strongly suspect that the ‘invaders’ would be shown the errors of bucking the Royal family and the culture of the land.

The only question is if the ‘invaders’ families would be charged for bullet expenditures or blade polishing.

  5. Look at what has happened in Great Britain. David Greenfield writes about a recent report on the sex-grooming Muslim gangs of Manchester. He says in part,

Part of that is due to attitudes about the victims themselves. See here for an example.

It’s unlikely these ‘girls’ would have been groomed if they weren’t
    slags to begin with.

The cops likely had this same attitude.

    • What facet of the attitudes of these MINOR girls makes this OK? A victim is still a victim, a perpetrator is still a perp. . And if this indeed the attitude of the cops, then we need to start from scratch with the police.

  6. Two things:. .One, the quip “A century from now, Mozart will still be a dead white male.” applies. Two… Ironically, I’m posting from Palestine at this moment, and becoming more inclined to pay attention to Alizia.
