Does Anyone Understand How Twitter Could Post This?

Twitter Tweet

Twitter has been on a banning binge, including the President of the United States, and it chooses now to grandstand about open internet principles?Forget hypocrisy; this is closer to satire. What’s going on here?

Some theories:

  • Twitter Public Policy missed a crucial memo.
  • Some rogue intern is trying to make Twitter look ridiculous.
  • Twitter is gaslighting us.
  • The company is incompetent.
  • The company thought it would be funny to post a misleading tweet that would, under its own policy would mandate suspending Twitter’s account.
  • It literally believes that Donald Trump is an exception to all standards and principles.
  • Emulating the President it just helped elect, it has concluded that the American public only pays attention to what you say, not what you do.

Anything else?

  1. From Brian Crane on your Facebook feed.

Were Twitter and Facebook ordered by the government to suspend Trump’s account? Did the government have anything to do with Amazon deciding it was bad business to host Parler?

    • Could one argue that Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’ tweet calling out Apple and Google Play constitute undue government influence on the business practices of private companies?

        • No, it’s obvious. Brian is a typical, progressive marinated in about six progressive cultures I could name (but won’t), influenced by echo-chamber peers and friends, seldom exposed to diverse points of view. That’s been the reflex defense of all of social media’s abuses for years.

          • You really think that’s an argument, Brian? It’s a rationalization for dangerous and unethical conduct by a monopoly. The government doesn’t order news organizations to lie or engage in propaganda either, but it’s still damaging to democracy. Basic Ethics 101: because you can do something doesn’t mean you should, or that it’s OK. An alliance of news media, big tech platforms and social media could guarantee that only citizens of one party, one ideology or specific policy preferences could participate in public discourse. That’s not democracy, it’s Orwell. The First Amendment doesn’t only lay out restrictions on government power, it enunciates a national cultural value as well. A private school that requires students to only express approved opinions is just as despicable as a public school that does the same thing; it just can violate freedom of speech legally. Incredibly, the party that once championed civil rights and argued that private business discrimination was wrong even though it was then legal is now making the same argument the racists did, because they want opposing views suppressed.

      • Could it relate to the fact their stocks, along with Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Facebook, have plummeted? If someone ever comprised a list for people to substitute for these companies, they know the people will leave, and their stocks will plummet further.,

  2. Whoa. Nothing to see here. Just a translation error (not uncommon, it is a difficult language to master). From Twitter’s original Lagunda notice, the English translation omitted the ending from the original Twitter statement in the Lagunda language:

“We strongly condemn internet shutdowns–they are hugely harmful, violate basic human rights and principles contrary to the #Openinternet unless the Twitter enlightened, woke staff censors the shutdown for your own good. Or our own good. Anyway, while we do censor messages we don’t like, it’s important you believe we don’t.”

  3. I have another theory: that twitter is making the point that they alone decide what reaches the public, and that they alone set the policy for what qualifies. They’re not going to tell you what those policies are, because if they do, people start looking for loopholes. If you don’t like it, then feel free to build your own system, where you can set the policy. The thing is, keep telling the other side to build their own whatever is just going to result in 2 of everything, one for liberals, the other for conservatives. We’re just moving closer and closer to 2 Americas. I say so be it. It’s time to live happily apart when you can no longer live happily together.

    • But you can’t build your own system. Any system you build must follow their rules as well. Look at Parler, Bitchute, and

    • Sure, build your own system, and then see how long you can keep it when we cut off your access to licensed services, trades, banks, lawyers, healthcare, schools (and remove your children for their own good, by the way), etc. etc. Good luck finding a funeral home and cemetery that will take you.

  4. What I am afraid of is that this post was made to rub Conservatives’ faces in the fact that they are powerless and there is nothing they can do about it. This is a post to demoralize the American public that is upset about the censorship. It tells them, ‘We care about Ugandan censorship, but we will censor you because you are powerless and you don’t matter.’ You can also do this by impeaching a President with a simple yes or no vote with no debate or discussion. I am afraid the actions in the Senate may be similar. They may remove Trump from office with no discussion, no debate, and no defense. That lets everyone know that the Democrats are in charge and they will NEVER have to worry about the electorate again. It is the people who count the votes that matter, not the people who vote.

When a person with dirt on a lot of high-level people is imprisoned, people speculate that he will never make it to trial, and then he dies is prison under extremely improbable circumstances. You aren’t supposed to believe he committed suicide. You are supposed to realize that they are untouchable.

    • I will paraphrase a quote from the film Joker.

How about another joke? What do you get when you cross a disaffected, alienated, disillusioned people with a BIG TECH ESTABLISHMENT THAT SILENCES THEM AND TREATS THEM LIKE TRASH? I’ll tell you what you get. YOU GET WHAT YOU FUCKING DESERVE!

    • I think their follow-up tweet on the same thread bolsters the “rubbing their faces in it” theory. There’s no way they wrote this with a straight face:

Access to information and freedom of expression, including the public conversation on Twitter, is never more important than during democratic processes, particularly elections.

    • This.

They are smart enough to know exactly what they’re doing. This is the time to kick a man when he’s down. Because this is the end of history and they are the winners, and there is absolutely no chance of the fortunes changing and them being on the receiving end forever and ever.

  5. It’s important to keep in mind that Twitter is staffed very heavily with, and completely run by, a cohort that is almost uniformly young (I’d be shocked if the average age of their employees is over 40) “social justice” types. They’re True Believers, of the “ends justify the means” variety, which makes them far more dangerous than just garden-variety hypocrites. I’m sure you couldn’t even explain to them the dissonance between this statement and the banning of American conservatives that they do on a regular basis. They wouldn’t understand that there’s a conflict between the two. Critical thinking is almost impossible to those who have been indoctrinated into a cult, and it’s clear that there’s a specific brand of authoritarian leftism that runs through these tech companies that functions in a very cult-like fashion.

  6. Jack Marshall wrote this in a comment on his Facebook post.

My take? I don’t trust tech monopolies to decide what is or isn’t fit for the public to read. They are conflicted, they are biased, and they just aren’t all that bright. The remedy for speech is more speech; that’s the American way. Twitter allows tweets from celebrities and idiots like Chris Cuomo stating that “hate sppech” isn’t protected under the First Amendment. False. It allows tweets that state that Mike Brown and Trayvon Martin were “murdered.” False. These aren’t standards, they are political biases imposed on the public by people abusing their power. That’s my take. And I’m right.

I have been spending the past half hour or so commenting on Jacvk’s Facebook posts on the matter. It is shameful people are supporting Big Tech censorship.

  7. It goes to the heart of what leftism is all about. No other American group hates like the left does. If you differ with them — global warming, race relations, size of government, Donald Trump — they will humiliate, defame, libel and try to economically crush you. The leftist solution to disagreement is to cancel you personally and professionally. You MUST publicly denounce your crime of not following what they deem acceptable and ask forgiveness for your ignorance.

      • “Always remember, others may hate you, but those who hate you don’t win unless you hate them, and then you destroy yourself.” ― Richard Nixon

          • I was just thinking of a movie speech. Why is it that you can’t hate evil any more? We used to. It was considered right and natural. Now, you are told you need to be better than that. The result has been that evil has flourished. Evil is just fine with hating YOU. If you aren’t allowed to hate evil back or do anything about it, what is the end result? Pacifism is just respectable cowardice. A former pacifist taught me that.

            The speech:
” By God, I do. We’re not just going to shoot the bastards. We’re going to cut out their living guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks. We’re going to murder those lousy Hun bastards by the bushel.

Now, some of you boys, I know, are wondering whether or not you’ll chicken-out under fire. Don’t worry about it. I can assure you that you will all do your duty. The Nazis are the enemy. Wade into them. Spill their blood. Shoot them in the belly. When you put your hand into a bunch of goo that a moment before was your best friend’s face, you’ll know what to do.

Now, there’s another thing I want you to remember. I don’t want to get any messages saying that we are holding our position.

We’re not holding anything. Let the Hun do that.

We are advancing constantly and we’re not interested in holding onto anything — except the enemy.

We’re going to hold onto him by the nose, and we’re gonna kick him in the ass.

We’re gonna kick the hell out of him all the time, and we’re gonna go through him like crap through a goose!

Now, there’s one thing that you men will be able to say when you get back home, and you may thank God for it.

Thirty years from now when you’re sitting around your fireside with your grandson on your knee, and he asks you, “What did you do in the great World War II?” — you won’t have to say, “Well, I shoveled shit in Louisiana.””

Today, this would be considered an unacceptable attitude for a conservative. However, it is a laudable attitude for a leftist.

  8. Jack asked, “Does Anyone Understand How Twitter Could Post This?”

Sure I understand how Twitter can post that. Being a bald-faced hypocrite has been a right of passage for progressives for a very long time. Remember the unspoken motto of progressives that infects everything they do and say:

Liberty for me but not for thee!

  9. I having been thinking about this for a little bit. It all makes perfect sense to me.

Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and other social media platforms are simply acting consistently in their minds. According to them, there is no distinction between Trump and Ugandan or other third world despots. In their world view, Trump exemplifies totalitarian/fascist dictatorship, and his mere presence is an existential threat to everyone and everything, and he is wreaking havoc on the world and must be stopped. That underlies the decisions to ban him on social media.

Because Trump is the US embodiment of pure evil, anything that is heaped on him is not only acceptable but absolutely required; otherwise, he and his brainwashed deplorable racists, fascists, xenophobes, homophobes, Islamaphobes, Nazis, etc. will have free reign and unleash devastation the likes of which the world has ever seen, or will ever see. His mere presence in the world is unacceptable and he must be destroyed. Consequently, therein lies their complaint that Ugandan fascists are stealing a budding democracy from the grasp of peoples yearning for freedom from oppression. I suspect they blame Trump for Uganda government’s actions: But for Donald Trump, peace and liberty would already exist in that nation.
