Assassination attempt on Justice Kavanaugh? Who’s “Justice Kavanaugh”?
Yes, it’s a Jumbo. But it’s worse than that…
Newsbusters reporter Kevin Tober recorded the relative minutes of coverage on the Sunday news talk shows for the January 6 Capitol riots show trial and the attempted assassination of Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The totals:
ABC: Capitol riot: 19:11; Kavanaugh: 0:00
CBS: Capitol riot: 19:31; Kavanaugh: 0:00
NBC: Capitol riot: 36:25′ Kavanaugh: 0:00
CNN: Capitol riot: 18:10; Kavanaugh: 0:00
We already know that MSNBC wants Kavanaugh dead, so there is no need to include that network’s ration. NPR was little better, twice mentioning the Kavanaugh episode without actually reporting on it: “a man arrested near Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s house.,” and “we learned of the arrest of an armed man outside Justice Kavanaugh’s house.” That was it. This is what your tax dollars get you in timely news reporting.Fox naturally covered the assassination attempt, not because Kavanaugh is a conservative justice, but because it is, you know, news. Fox also covered the “J6” prime time hearing. By sheerest luck, I happened to see that segment, which was considerable, with Bret Baier interviewing Democratic Senator Chris Coons, a purveyor of the “insurrection” narrative. I stopped in my channel surfing because I was shocked to see Coons in hostile territory, as few Democrats will go on Fox News. Good for him.
There is no excuse for the mainstream news networks to ignore a genuine attempt on a Supreme Court Justice’s life, but there is a reason, and it’s a frightening and disgusting one. To again quote that noted right-wing mouthpiece, Bill Maher, regarding the New York Times’ minimal coverage,
“If this has been a liberal Supreme Court justice that someone came to kill, it would’ve been on the front page…if it’s not part of something that feeds our narrative, fuck it, we bury it.”
Since Bill is playing that game, do imagine what the coverage would have been like if there had been an attempt on the life of the late Ruth Bader Ginsberg, or current justices Kagan or Sotomayor.
To be fair, there is no question that the January 6 riot hearings is also a major news story. The fact that a political party is abusing its power and role to hold a contrived media show-trial for the sole purpose of gaining an advantage at the polls is very important story, with serious implications for our democracy. The fact that the journalism establishment is openly assisting this effort is also a major development.
