Ethics Hero (And Most Ethical Use Of “Asshole” of 2023): Gold Star Father Mark Schmitz

Mark Schmitz, a Gold Star father, testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee yesterday regarding the deadly suicide bombing in August 2021 that left 13 U.S. servicemembers dead, including Mr. Schmitz’s son, Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jared Schmitz. The cruel, irresponsible and incompetent American withdrawal from Afghanistan and its aftermath ordered by President Biden has been largely forgotten by most American voters, since they have the attention span of ADD kittens. Perhaps Schmitz’s no-hold-barred attack on Biden’s conduct in this episode will remind them.

What am I talking about? The mainstream news media will make sure as few of the kittens see his testimony as possible, and there’s still more than a year for them to forget again.

His full statement:

SCHMITZ: “Two years have gone by and where are we? To be frank, we’re knee deep in bullshit, is where we are. Everyone who held a key position in the military still has that position or has been promoted. John Kirby still sits on his perch, which apparently faces the opposite direction from where all the action was. Lincoln continues to delay key evidence by delaying subpoenas. Not a single general slapped down their stars, which should have happened two years ago when Biden ignored his reliable intelligence.

“Not a single person has been held accountable. Our so-called leader can’t seem to even utter their names in public, not even once. Mr. Biden has run his entire political campaign for 50 years as the family man. Well, I’ve got news for you, sir. The curtain has been lifting, and that campaign slogan will never work again. We have seen what’s going on in your family, and even worse, we’ve been seeing how you’ve been treating us as Gold Star families, and there couldn’t be anything more disgusting and cowardly than the way you have treated us.

“You are a disgrace to this nation. You have no business having ultimate command over our military, and I regret not saying that to your face when I had the opportunity in Dover. I felt it more important to bite my tongue, but I also had more important things on my mind at that time, like receiving my son’s lifeless body state-side.

“While I stood there on the tarmac, watching you check your watch over and over again, all I wanted to do was shout out, “It’s two fucking thirty, asshole.” But out of respect for the other grieving families, I bit my tongue once again. Well as you can probably tell by now, I’m done biting my tongue. You, sir, stole their lives, their futures, their dreams, and have ripped apart 13 families. You can not even man up and admit that. You, sir, gave us all the title Gold Star family. You, sir, dishonor honor and integrity.”

  1. The disastrous pull-out from Afghanistan and the gaping vacuum of credibility we left in our wake (which probably significantly contributed to Russia’s confidence leading to its move against Ukraine, especially given Putin already knew Biden was part of an administration that was passive and even tacitly approving of aggressive actions by Russia) strikes me as impeachable conduct.

    Abject national humiliation.

    • Joy Reid thought it was the greatest thing. Her thought was it was a little messy, but we needed to get out of there. The thought that maybe we needed to withdraw from a commitment that wasn’t getting us much is valid thought, but doing it precipitously, leaving behind our biggest airfield, a ton of weapons, and a government incapable of sustaining itself, was not a valid thought. Doing it so that the president could make a speech on September 11th that we were not there anymore is not a valid reason.

What was done here was a slap in the face to every American serviceman who deployed to Afghanistan. It was a dance on the graves of the fallen of this conflict. It was a statement that all the sacrifices made there and all the work done there were for nothing. It was a statement that all the rhetoric about saving the women of Afghanistan from the grip of an Islamic fundamentalist government that would prevent them from getting an education and would beat them if they left the house without a male relative was just empty rhetoric. But hey, women in oppressive foreign countries and fallen soldiers don’t vote. It’s more important to make sure that women here, who do vote, are able to kill their gestating children whenever they feel like it, then it is to do anything abroad, except maybe fund abortions in other countries.

It also showed our allies that we don’t keep our commitments, and in fact we withdraw from our commitments as soon as the political leadership decides that this commitment is inconvenient, or the political leadership wants to score some points.

But hey, at least we’re not getting any more mean tweets from an evil president. Don’t you know this president was the one who brought decency and honor back to the White House? Yeah right, the only people who believe that are the partisan hacks. The hacks are too far gone, but how many thinking people here can honestly say that they think this president is doing a bang-up job and defend it without hating on Trump? I’ll wait. Even a lot of those who hated Trump know that these indictments are banana republic stuff.

  2. What’s worse than the pullout disaster, and all other Obama/Biden disasters, is the news media (most of it) refusing to cover it fairly, or with even 10% of the zeal the exhibited in hounding Trump for the last 7 years. Watching US news media completely drop all pretenses of objectivity and professionalism and exposing themselves for the leftist propagandists that they are.
Biden (and Obama) are not the biggest assholes; it’s those whose job is to call them out for being assholes

  3. have you read Section 3 of the 14th Amendment?

“No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any state, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any state legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any state, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.”

It could be argued that the military leadership effectively provided aid or comfort to the Taliban and as such are disqualified under Section 3.

Does this mean servicemen can openly defy the orders of these particular leaders as they are not qualified to be commissioned officers in the armed forces?
