Ethics Hero: Senator Chuck Schumer

Schumer, as the nation’s highest ranking elected official of Jewish heritage, is the ideal official to call out the Left’s rampant anti-Semitism that has been exposed since the October 6 Hamas attack on Israel. Doing so involved considerable political risks, and frankly, I didn’t think he had the guts to do it. Yesterday, however, Schumer delivered an impassioned speech in the Senate condemning members of his own party and ideological persuasion for “unknowingly aiding and abetting” anti-Semitism in the name of social justice, and thus fueling bigotry against Jews as Israel battles for its survival against Hamas.

One could complain about the “unknowingly” part, though it could be a nice way of saying “you’re ignorant and stupid.” Schumer couldn’t be completely frank going into an election year: Democrats have a fragile coalition of various victim-mongering groups that have the attitude that not supporting their every twitch is the equivalent of opposing them. Still, his remarks were pointed, saying at one point, “Can anybody imagine a horrific terrorist attack in another country receiving such a reception?”

Schumer tried to cushion the blow; for example, he deliberately used the term “liberals” to describe his party’s bigots and never used the term “progressives” once. Clever, that: the Left jettisoned “liberal” for “progressive” when the former had been associated with so many bad ideas that it became a liability. Sadly, the Left has been even worse under the progressive banner. To its credit, the New York Times didn’t mince words in reporting his speech, writing,

“Many progressives have taken up the Palestinian cause as an extension of the racial and social justice movements that have recently dominated Democratic politics, while more mainstream members of the party have continued to offer unequivocal backing for Israel’s actions and response to Hamas’s attack. That schism has also extended to the debate over whether additional military aid to Israel requested by President Biden should come with any strings attached, with a solid bloc of Democrats arguing the money should come with conditions.”

Schumer was not about to acknowledge that he and his fellow progressives created this ugly side of political left by passively encouraging the intersectionality lock-step and the spreading delusion that no minority groups share any responsibility for their own problems and failures. Democrats let loose the tiger they now have by the tail, but at least Schumer isn’t pretending the beast isn’t dangerous.

You can read his full remarks here.

Having complimented the Times for reporting something straight (for a change), I must also point out that it did not allow comments on the story. My assumption is that they knew the response would not reflect well on the Times or its readers.

  1. Isn’t this the same Senator from Wall Street (D.) who told a President, “Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind”? Sorry, Chuck, enjoy your own petard.

  2. I would be more inclined to bestow hero status on some other progressive who is not Jewish and does not possess the seniority and power he enjoys. Nonetheless he deserves recognition.

  3. Much like Hilary Clinton on the same topic a few weeks ago, one needs to give credit where it is due. You may insert gratuitous slam of Schumer here.

Of course, since it’s well known that Jack Marshall is a hapless shill for the Republican party and MAGA, he would certainly never do such a thing.
