Ethics Dunce: Carolina Panthers Owner David Tepper [Corrected]

This one is almost too easy to bother posting.

The NFL’s Carolina Panthers owner was videoed as he threw a drink at a fan or fans in the stands beneath his box near the end of his team’s latest loss, a 26-0 wipe-out to the Jacksonville Jaguars. There’s no audio in the video, which was posted on Instagram, so we don’t know (yet) what the provocation was, but it doesn’t matter. Dousing a fan with a drink will get usually get the drink-tosser escorted out of any stadium or arena—I’ve seen it, more than once. For an NFL owner to do it to a fan, well, this mandates a Costanza:

Tepper is a hedge fund billionaire, so no NFL fine is likely to trouble him, and being banned from the team’s games would be doing him a favor, since his team stinks. How do you punish a team owner for outrageous conduct like that? Forcing him to sell the team, which has been done in other sports, seems a bit extreme for a single drink toss, but such treatment of fans by an owner is an embarrassment to the league. He will certainly apologize, but apologies are cheap.

I’m writing this before the NFL’s response has been announced.

  1. Jack: “For an owner to do it to one of his team’s own fans,….”

From what I heard, he threw it at the fans of the opposing team. Carolina was playing the Jaguars in Florida.

    Still warrants a Costanza.
