Incompetent Elected Official of the Month: North Las Vegas Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown

Why do communities keep electing officials who are ignorant of the law, history, and the U.S. Constitution?

Three days ago, North Las Vegas Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown, (Guess which party!) announced on social media that her city would host a Black-owned business fair this coming weekend at the conclusion of Black History Month. The fest would feature local black vendors, community resources, an art corner and an area for children. Food trucks and live entertainment would enliven the proceedings. It would be a fun day of promotion for all participating—black-owned only!—businesses.

Who could have a problem with that?

That mean, conservative gadfly social media account “The Libs of TikTok” spoiled all the fun, by posting, “BREAKING: The Mayor of @CNLV announces the city will discriminate against white business owners. This is government-sanctioned and taxpayer-funded racism.”

Which, in fact, it was.

Quickly other social media users piled on, calling the event discriminatory, illegal and racist, all of which were accurate. I assume after some conversations with city lawyers, the mayor’s office informed the media that of course non-black owned businesses would be welcome to participate, meaning that it would not be a black-owned business fair after all. You would think that a city mayorwould know that all race-based discrimination and racial segregation is unconstitutional, wouldn’t you?

This is more anti-white government discrimination whack-a-mole, brought to you by George Floyd et al. The mayor of North Las Vegas (Guess which race!) got caught, but how many examples of illegal government discrimination, large and small, against the “right” races go on in cities and towns across the land? Are there enough whistle-blowers, watchdogs and vocal opponents of this currently viral trend to keep up until the divisive and destructive mania peters out, if it ever does?

I doubt it.

  1. When I first read this piece, I wondered if the Mayor would backpedal, focusing on the word “featuring.” Maybe she would insist that while Black-owned businesses would be emphasized, all businesses would be welcome. But even that reeks of discrimination…the notion of “featuring” businesses based on the skin color of the owner.

If a city were to have a community fair featuring White-owned businesses, I would expect lots of people to howl long and loud…and rightfully so. It’s one thing to feature businesses of a certain type – say, car dealerships or clothing stores or bakeries – but it’s a completely different to feature businesses based on those tried-and-true tribal distinctions.

I hope we reach the tipping point on this destructive pattern soon, but I’m not sure, either.
