Ethics Irony: Democrats “Resisting” the President During the State of the Union Address Will Be More Destructive Than the J-6 Riot

But they’ll do it anyway.

Some Democrats have told colleagues they will storm out of the chamber if and when Trump says specific lines they find objectionable. Some are going to boycott the speech entirely. They are considering using props, like noisemakers, signs (like the “war criminal” sign “Squad” member Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) held up during Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s speech last year, eggs or empty egg cartons to taunt Trump for not bringing down inflation in less than two months, and so on.

Morons. Of course, Ethics Villain Nancy Pelosi set the precedent for such juvenile and divisive tactics when she ostentatiously ripped up the text of Trump’s last State of the Union Speech in 2020. Remember when GOP Representative Joe Wilson was excoriated in the media and by both Republicans and Democrats by shouting “You lie!” at President Barack Obama during a joint session of Congress in 2009? Wilson was formally rebuked by the House , which held that by shouting that during the president’s speech the Congressman had committed a “breach of decorum and degraded the proceedings of the joint session, to the discredit of the House.” The State of the Union is the most notable and in most years the most important joint session of the House and Senate, as well as a traditional demonstration of unity and respect for the U.S.’s government, the Presidency, and it institution. Elected officials deliberately breaching this “democratic norm” and showing such disrespect for a newly elected POTUS in the first address of his first year in office is destabilizing, dangerously divisive, and an unequivocal demonstration that the party will not give the people’s choice a fair chance—just like the last time.

The riot on January 6, 2021, in contrast, was entirely executed spontaneously by a mob of drunks, fools, and radicals. Other than giving Democrats a political target that they flogged beyond all reason, the disgraceful episode was inert and meaningless. A major disruption of the President’s State of the Union address orchestrated by the opposition party sends a message to millions of drunks, fools, and radicals on their side that outright defiance of Presidential authority is appropriate and necessary, following the lead of such crypto insurrectionists as the mayor of Boston and the governor of Maine. Ukraine Caucus co-chair Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) says she will distribute ties and scarves with the colors of Ukraine’s flag to signal support for President Volodymyr Zelensky over President Trump.

How patriotic.

Recognizing the galactic stupidity of such tactics, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) wrote to House Democrats that he and other party leaders plan to attend the speech to “make clear to the nation that there is a strong opposition party ready, willing and able to serve as a check and balance” as he urged a “strong, determined and dignified Democratic presence in the chamber.”

Maybe one of the more combustible members of the party, say, Rep. Jasmine Crockett, will show real commitment by setting herself on fire during the speech. That is certainly what her rudderless, desperate and ethics-free party is doing metaphorically as it tries to regroup after November 5.

  1. I vote for the Senator from Wall Street leading the Democrats in a round of “We Will Win!” chants while he rhythmically shakes his fists and stamps his feet like a spoiled, out of control two-year-old. Chuck, you’re pathetic.

  2. I hate the outbursts. I hated it when MTG did it during President Biden’s SOTU address a year or two back regarding Afghanistan…I hate it when anyone does it. It’s a sure sign of narcissism…”I must steal – if only for a moment – the spotlight that belongs to someone else.”

The Democrats have a spot, tailor-made for all the grandstanding, the tantrum-throwing bloviating, and speech-document shredding they desire: it’s called “The Rebuttal”, which comes after the President finishes.

Democrats, save your shrieking for then. Prove yourselves to be better than Marjorie Taylor Greene. But sadly, you (as a group) are as self-absorbed as she…and far more self-deluded. You probably can’t help yourselves.

  3. Any chance we can go back to the norm of sending the address in written form? One of many complaints I have about Wilson is turning it into a spectacle.

  4. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he and his team are
“ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace
that lasts,” as he also proposed the initial stages of a peace plan for
    Ukraine.

I’d be willing to bet the Democrats would do anything to prevent a peace plan for Ukraine just to undermine Trump. They don’t want any successes under Trump. They don’t care about the good of the country as they are obsessed with there own thirst for power.

    • Here are my thoughts on the dust-up:

Zelenskyy wanted to kill the minerals deal and used the meeting as a way to renegotiate its terms for more money/arms, etc. Trump didn’t like being manipulated so instead of signing the deal behind closed doors, he used the presser as a way to kill it. Zelenskyy then played the obnoxious brat card thinking Trump would not want to be upstaged. Trump, though, had other ideas realizing that he had all the leverage so he killed the deal and threw Zelenskyy out of the Oval Office. Zelenskyy’s handlers took him into a back room and beat him with a stick, but sent him off to Europe to use the EU as leverage to force Trump back to the table. Trump, though, shrugged and dragged his feet. Zelenskyy, realizing he screwed up, made a backroom deal with Trump that salvages the minerals/arms deal but on terms a bit more favorable to the US with concessions that the EU would step up its defense of Ukraine.
