First May Open Forum, or “The Ethics That Bloom In the Spring (Tra-La)”

Suddenly there are more stories and events of interest ethically than I can handle, so your contributions to the weekly free-for-all are even more needed than usual.

This is especially true because I am still picking bits of brain and skill off the walls, ceiling and computer screen after the jolt generating today’s first post.

So please, emote here early and often.

Where’s that Windex?

Post Script: That version of the famous song from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Mikado,” by the late, lamented D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1966 is 1) way, way too slow 2) exactly the kind of stodgy staging that killed the Victorian pair’s original production company and that gives G&S a bad reputation. I’ve played Ko-Ko in that number four times, and it should be a romp. (When I played the part in high school, I did an Adolf Hitler imitation in one of the encores…)

    • I am curious about this pottymouth trend between and betwixt and amongst Democrat politicians. They are all cursing up a storm, trying to out do each other with vulgarities. What is that all about?

Rep. Omar, though, is particularly obnoxious. I may not like the interviewer or his network but her insult seemed to a total breach of decorum for a sitting US Representative to tell a journalist to fuck off, especially when the question was legitimate about a raging news story of national importance. In fact, the more that is learned about St. Kilmar Obrego García, the more it seems that the DNC and the media have chosen the wrong hill.

  1. Could you argue that there is an ethical issue with being a killy joy, maybe along the lines of social etiquette or increasing joy in society? For example, there’s a raging debate on the internet about whether 100 men could beat 1 Gorilla. Most people are having fun with it, but there’s some random people who are making it political and weird, pretty much ruining the fun and intent of the thing.

I imagine it’s like the people that get offended at all stand up comedy because it’s not PC enough for them.

    They ruin the mood, man!

  2. To start off, I’d like to present for your reading pleasure, a screen shot of an opinion from a Trump Deranged regressive Democrat…

Yup folks, that’s what you get from one of those 21st century tolerant Liberals we hear tell about that exists somewhere over the rainbow.

On a completely separate note; I recently watched the entire Trump cabinet meeting.

I have to be completely honest, I couldn’t watch the entire 2 hour meeting in one sitting because I had to pick the dirt out of motorcycle tire treads and count the bugs on my windshield.

I watched the entire cabinet meeting the day after it took place and before I watched any news coverage of the meeting. Knowing what I know about how the left leaning media intentionally distorts things, I wanted to know exactly what was said by everyone in that meeting before I was inundated with propaganda about the meeting.

“The political left has shown its pattern of propaganda lies within their narratives so many times since 2016 that it’s beyond me why anyone would blindly accept any narrative that the political left and their lapdog media actively push?”

I thought there was a fair amount of details presented regarding successful things that have been done in the first 100 days of the 2024 Trump administration, but the repeated theme of pumping up of Trump was so thick that it completely overshadowed the meeting. All that sucking up was unnecessary for the public to see, in some ways I think it resulted in a net negative for the meeting because the sucking up was so thick from every member of the cabinet that it appeared to be a false facade. That much sucking up can easily make viewers wonder what they’re hiding. It’s a really good idea to show a unified front but that can easily be done without all that sucking up, it was absolutely ridiculous and in my opinion it was unethical to present that kind of apparent false facade.

  3. Perhaps someone can explain why Kilmar Abrego Garcia must be returned to the US to get “due process”. As I understand the facts he had gone through a deportation hearing and was ordered deported because the court felt the government provided sufficient evidence to identify him as a member of MS 13. He appealed that decision and lost on appeal. He then sought to use an asylum claim saying he feared a rival gang and that judge granted a withholding order that said he could not be deported to El Salvador but that did not bar his deportation anywhere else.

If we assume that he must have a hearing to establish whether the rationale for the withholding order is still necessary why cannot that hearing be accomplished via electronic means. I know that our district courts use video conferencing for arraignments of defendants who are incarcerated in our jails so so what prevents a video hearing from taking place? It also seems to me that such an method would allow officials from El Salvador to testify to the safety of his country instead of just taking Garcia’s word for it. Moreover, Garcia’s lawyer would be here or he could go there and could be given an opportunity to confer with him before hand. I don’t know what to label Garcia. Is he a defendant or a plaintiff? Either way, this is not so complex that Garcia must be present with his lawyer who will present the arguments. The only facts in question are whether or not he would be at significant risk by returning to his home country.

This seems to be such a no brainer that I can only conclude that there must be some reason that this has not been suggested earlier.

    • What the Democrats want is that every illegal receives a hearing before an immigration judge before being deported. As there are only 700 immigration judges in this country, this will effectively reduce deportation to a trickle, thereby sabotaging Donald Trump’s border policies.

The reason why the Biden administration allowed for massive illegal immigration has to do with elections:

      • Reapportioning seats of House of Representatives to blue states, as the census counts population instead of citizens.
      • Having illegals vote (guess for which party); this requires that voters do not have to present an ID to prove citizenship.
      • In the long terms: amnesty for illegals, and a path to citizenship; this will create a new constituency for the Democrats.

To compare this with the due process rights for any non-USA citizen who steps up to a valid border check point:

      • CBP will detain and deport any non-USA citizen who is unable to show a correct visa or green card, without the right to an attorney or hearing by a judge.
      • CBP may detain and deport any non-USA citizen with a visa who does not answer questions of a CBP agent in a satisfactory way, without the right to an attorney or hearing by a judge.
      • CBP may detain a green-card holder who violated the conditions for a green-card (e.g. misdemeanors, apparent abandonment of residence in USA), but the green-card holder is entitled to an attorney and hearing by a judge, who may decide about deportation.

So according to Democrats illegals who successfully ran out Border Patrol have more rights than visa holders, and need to be treated like green card holders; this is absurd.

      • CVB

He does appear to be getting Kidd glove treatment but is there a reason specified in law that prevents the use of teleconferencing to have whatever hearing he is supposedly entitled to?

        • States like Maryland and New York allow for teleconferencing court proceedings using MS Teams (NY) and Zoom (MD) according to AI Overview via Google.

However I do not know why the Trump administration would allow Garcia a day in USA court (physical or virtual) to allow him to return to the USA, as he is now an El Salvador citizen who is back in his home country El Salvador, with no valid reason to be in the USA.

          • CVB

I understand your point but giving him a hearing does not mean he gets out of a Salvadoran jail. They are keeping him in jail for their own reasons not ours.

Assume for a moment that he receives a favorable ruling from a progressive judge. At which point he has had due process here but it does not mean that El Salvador will send him back. Unless we plan to charge him with a crime there is no reason to to extradite him.

We cannot force a sovereign nation to give us one of their citizens.

My point was simply to eliminate the argument that he was not given due process to end the withholding order. A teleconference hearing renders that argument moot. The withholding order that still is on the books suggests he has a valid reason. A hearing would probably eliminate that reason given the changing nature of security in El Salvador now.

I don’t want him here either but I don’t want progressives to have argument either.

            • My point was simply to eliminate the argument that he was not given due process to end the withholding order.

              Chris,

Your proposed tactic does not make sense. You do not argue with a party who acts in bad faith. All the Trump administration has to do is to keep their foot down, and execute the agenda on which they were elected.

Wise parents know when it is time to stop arguing with a belligerent child. Keep your foot down, execute your will, punish when you need to, but do not argue or explain!

Our host Jack referred in a new post to the following article, that explains that no argument will ever satisfy the Democrats as they simply do not want anyone deported.

              https://thefederalist.com/2025/05/02/3-questions-angry-democrats-need-to-answer-about-illegal-alien-deportations/

As a practical political matter, it also means that the Trump administration should simply ignore court rulings to stop deportations by activist judges.

Looking at the midterm elections, this issue is a winner for Trump and the GOP, as 56% of the electorate wants all illegals to be deported. Having Senators travel to El Salvador to bring back an illegal who is also a wife-beating gangbanger involved in human trafficking is making them look like fools to the majority of voters; the GOP attack adds basically write themselves.

So all the Trump administration has to do is to show the electorate success in securing the border and deporting (criminal) illegal aliens. That works much better electorally than trying to engage the Democrats in arguments.

  4. We’re at a kids’ soccer tournament. There’s a child here who’s parents have dressed in a shirt with the letters:

    “IDK”
    “IDC”
    “IDGAF”

    Which, if you don’t know are “I don’t know; I don’t care; I don’t give a F—-“

What an absolutely abhorrent society-eating message.

    • Nice. Reinforces my belief that one’s IQ is inversely proportional to the number of words on one’s T-shirt, with the parents of that kid deserving the vicarious IQ score as each letter counts as a word.
