Yes, My Conservative Facebook Friends Can Be Just As Irrational As the Progressives…

A usually wise and measured conservative Facebook friend posted with approval a tweet by conservative pundit Matt Walsh, complaining about the father of a 15-year-old school shooter who killed two people and injured six others being charged after the tragedy. The killings (the girl shot herself as well, and died) occurred at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, in December.

“Let’s just be honest about the pattern here,” Walsh wrote. “This is the third time that a parent has been charged for violence committed by their child. In every case, the parent has been white. There is violence committed in the streets of every major city every single day. You could blame the crappy, neglectful parents in literally all of those cases. And yet none of them have ever been charged.”

Wow, talk about the wrong hill to die on! Both of those other cases involved criminally negligent parents, and the father of the late shooter in Wisconsin may have been the worst of the three.

Jeffrey Rupnow, 42, faces two counts of intentionally giving a dangerous weapon to a person under 18, causing death, and contributing to the delinquency of a child, the New York Post reported. The man is an irresponsible lunatic, and the late girl’s mother isn’t much better. The criminal complaint against Rupnow says that his daughter spiraled out of control after her parents divorced. She was in therapy over a stressful and unstable childhood in which she was sent back and forth between her mother and father like a human ping-pong ball. Her parents divorced in 2014, remarried in 2017, divorced again in 2020, and then remarried for a second time. In April 2021, the couple petitioned for a third divorce.

Rupnow got custody of the daughter, which tells you something about Mom. He attempted to bond with her, he said, through firearms. Good plan! Dad bought his daughter a 9mm pistol and a .22-caliber Sig Sauer pistol, the latter in 2023 when she was14 years old.

Can you see where this is going? Rupnow apparently couldn’t.

Following the third divorce, Rupnow told police, his daughter started cutting herself, so he locked up all the knives in his home. He gave her access to guns instead! After taking her shooting with him, Rupnow told investigators, her interest in guns “snowballed.”

Good: Rupnow kept the guns he got for his daughter in a gun safe. Bad: He gave her the combination. Ten days before she shot up her school, Rupnow texted a friend that his daughter would shoot him if he left “the fun safe open right now.” “Fun safe”!

After the shooting and her suicide, investigators found a six-page manifesto in the the girl’s bedroom in her father’s house, along with maps of the school and a schedule of how she would carry out the attack. The father gave this sick and homicidal child access to his guns, and Matt Walsh thinks his being held responsible for the carnage she caused with them is racial discrimination. Should more black parents be charged like Rupnow and the parents in the other two cases? Sure, charge away, if it’s their guns their kids kill with. But anyone who has a scintilla of sympathy for Jeffrey Rupnow or feels he’s being treated unfairly should have a bag covering his head permanently.

  1. Unless there is evidence that he regularly called his mini arsenal a fun safe, I’m willing to believe he accidentally hit f instead of g on the tiny keyboard his phone provides for texting. F is next to G on the standard keyboard and the spellchecker would not have corrected him since it would not have identified fun as a misspelled word.

That being said, you’re right that he showed an appalling lack of judgment.

  2. I had minor mental health concerns about my son (when he was a teen), which is why the key to the trigger lock on my gun is on the key ring with the house keys, which is always in my pocket (when I’m awake). We need to learn that mental illness is as prevalent and stigma-free as pollen allergies and the common cold. Recognize it, accept it, and respond with compassion.
