Presidents of the United States should not say “fuck.” Ever. It doesn’t matter how “angry” they are.
Recalling this much linked post from a decade ago…an some of its offspring, like this, this, and this among others.
Ethicists, however, can say “fuck” when justified.
Fuck.
You won’t get any argument from me.
“But the President does it” still carries some weight and, even though we really don’t want kids emulating much of what President Trump does, the fact of the matter is that the news media will fixate to death on this in a way that they never batted an eye when LBJ cursed up a storm while sitting on the john. The President needs to remember that and be more careful.
I think the use of F bombs at any level is inappropriate. When society as a whole has become so coarse that the word is part of the lexicon of perhaps 99% of the public and used prolifically in media I cannot say his use violates democratic norms because the populace has normalized its use.
I wish it didn’t slip out of my mouth sometimes. My wife never uses the word and may have never used it. She won’t even say F-word. I asked her if she heard what Trump said today when being questioned and she said, “yes, he said that word.”
I recall an incident in my youth where my father and I were waiting for our car to be finished being fixed. The mechanics who were in earshot uttered ‘fuck’ and ‘shit’ repeatedly as nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. My father explained that inarticulate people with poor schooling can be incapable of expressing themselves properly and resort to swearing. This lesson stuck with me. Except for an occasional ‘hell’, I never swore in my professional life. I was particularly mindful in mixed company. Around my wife and close friends, I am less guarded.
I believe that for someone like me, its use can be appropriate and effective in adding emphasis to the point you’re trying to make.
For someone like LBJ or the mechanics of my youth, I think my father’s observation was probably correct.
Regarding Trump’s use in the soundbite this week, despite his penchant for uncouth language, he refrains from its use in public. Therefore, I believe its use was effective, unlike Obama’s “Red Line” and Biden’s and Harris’s “Don’t”.
And then there’s Boston where the “f-word” is used like a comma.
“Fuckin-A right you are, sweetheart.”
Well at least the media can get over the case of the vapours they got over “Shithole” now.
