The State Dept. Strikes a Blow Against Utopianism and Unethical Virtue-Signaling

The U.S. State Department announced that we will not participate in next week’s conference regarding the imaginary “two-state solution” for Israel and the Palestinians. Good.

France and Saudi Arabia are the hosts, and France has already announced its intention to recognize a Palestinian state. The U.S. called the meeting “counterproductive to ongoing efforts to end the Gaza war and release hostages” Ya think? Permitting Hamas and the Palestinian to benefit in any way from its 2023 terrorist attack on Israel only ensures more of the same.

This is another throbbing example of the Ethics Alarms nostrum that proposing impossible “solutions” to persistent problems is unethical, no matter how “Imagine”-ish they seem on paper. No, we are not going to engage in a trillion dollar transfer of wealth from white Americans who had nothing to do with slavery to black Americans who were never slaves. No, there will be no unilateral disarmament by any nation that has enough firepower to matter. No, the United States will never accept an Australian-style gun ban. No, the dangerous National Debt will never get smaller.

The two-state solution is arguably more impossible than any of these other impossible dreams. The Palestinians have been rejecting various two-states solution since 1948; their favored solution—wiping out Israel and slaughtering as many Jews as possible, “from the river to the sea” and all that—is far more likely. The Biden administration, being incompetent and addicted to wrong-headed policies, had the useless John Kerry flying around as some kind of ambassador for two-state peace: gee, that worked out well, don’t you think?

But the two-state fever dream is especially unethical now, when Israel is being accused of “genocide” while trying to prevent another Palestinian attempt at real genocide against Jews. Israel gave the Palestinians an opportunity to prove they could be trusted as neighbors when it allowed them to control Gaza. They started lobbing missiles into Israel almost immediately. This is a blood feud, it’s been going on since before 1948, and it is more steeped in hate now than ever.

What would possibly make the Kumbaya addicts think that this is a propitious time to hammer out another “two-state solution” plan? They are incorrigible, that’s all. Or maybe it’s because the thoroughly discredited Nobel Prize committee now gives out Peace Prizes for trying to achieve a two-state solution, or for looking like maybe perhaps possibly a statesman might cut the Gordian Knot some day but no time soon, which was the rational for giving Obama his medal.

One characteristic of President Trump that the Trump Deranged can’t stand is that he’s not sentimental and doesn’t engage in virtue-signaling at all. This is currently being described, especially on the religious Left, as rejecting “kindness.” You know: it’s kind to reward people for breaking laws and violating borders. No, it’s kind of stupid.

The same applies to two-state solution charades. It’s stupid and a waste of time. There are plenty of other major problems that can be solved. Let’s work on them.

The reflex retort to the Ethics Alarms assessment is, “So we just give up then?” Well, there are lots of impossible dreams that we are wise to abandon. We are not going to improve democracy by eliminating apathetic and ignorant voters, for example. That question is redolent of the “Do something!” mantra that the Left uses to advance or excuse hopeless, futile policies. Some problems can’t be fixed, and absent some unimaginable thunderclap of good luck, the Israel-Palestinian hate-fest seems to be one of them. Yeah, it’s too bad, a tragedy. That doesn’t make it less true.

  1. They just want to ignore history. The Arabs sided with the Nazis during WWII for reasons we all know. For decades, Britain was taken to task for not allowing more Jewish migration to Palestine in order to reduce the number of Holocaust victims while ignoring the fact that the Arabs would never have allowed it and violence would have erupted.
