Psst! Daily Beast! You Know Nothing About Negotiation, So Shut the Hell Up…

Here’s how the increasingly despicable Daily Beast introduced the story about Trump’s “summit” with Vladamir Putin:

President Donald Trump has given Russian President Vladimir Putin the red carpet treatment as they arrived for their historic summit, applauding the Russian autocrat before offering him a ride in the presidential limousine known as The Beast.

As the pair landed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Friday—three years after Russia invaded Ukraine—Trump greeted Putin with a military flyover and a handshake before the pair smiled for the cameras on a makeshift podium.

The extraordinary scene was the first time Putin, who has been largely frozen out by the West, has been on U.S. soil in 10 years.

It was also the first time an American president has given the VIP treatment to a Russian leader who faces an arrest warrant for war crimes issued by the International Criminal Court as well as being sanctioned by the U.S. government.

Is it possible to be more contemptible? This hack news aggregator is using a diplomatic effort in pursuit of a laudable goal—the end of hostilities that have claimed over a million casualties and devastated a region to continue the discredited and debunked Democrat narrative that Trump is somehow in league with Russia against U.S. interests. Would it be possible to write that section in snottier, more biased, less ethical fashion?

The story, according to these gutter journalists, is that President Trump didn’t kick Putin in the shins, call him an asshole, and make him walk through pig poop. You see, the idea in a negotiation where you want the other party to do something you want done is to make him or her as favorably disposed toward you as possible. This isn’t Negotiation 101, it’s Kindergarten Negotiation. How old is a typical child before he or she figures out that you get better results with honey than vinegar? Respect is the currency of international leadership. Roosevelt treated Stalin as friend and colleague, but he had no illusions about him. President Kennedy gave Nikita Krushchev VIP treatment at the height of the Cold War, and the Soviet leader had promised to “bury” the United States. Nikita was also the Butcher of Hungary and his record of crimes against humanity makes Putin look like Kris Kringle. Did any American news source—any—impugn the sainted JFK for doing everything he could to minimize the chances of a nuclear Armageddon? Why no, none did, because this was an era in which American institutions treated the President of the United States of America with respect, and accorded him the benefit of the doubt and the presumption of good faith.

That’s the way the system was supposed to work, and it did work. Vicious, ruthless, partisan blackguards (imagine the word I wanted to use) like the Daily Beast’s writers and editors don’t want the system to work, or society to be civil and functional, or for the public to admire their homeland. They just want their ideological fellow travelers to hold power forever, by any means necessary. Donald Trump blocked their aspiration(so far), and they will not rest until they destroy him. This Daily Beast hit piece, titled, “Trump Applauds Putin and Gives Pariah Ride in the Beast,”shows a once useful commentary source destroying its credibility through bias and hate.

Pick your favorite yellow journalism entry. Mine is “It was also the first time an American president has given the VIP treatment to a Russian leader who faces an arrest warrant for war crimes issued by the International Criminal Court as well as being sanctioned by the U.S. government.”

  1. Unless Putin has similar protective cover having Putin ride in the Beast makes sense from a security perspective. Imagine if Putin was shot by one of the Trump deranged while here we could be facing a nuclear showdown.

Given two people tried to kill Trump and that we had someone working in the Justice Department who would throw his career away by feloniously assaulting a federal officer in DC, I would expect that Clapper or his cronies know someone willing to try to assassinate Putin while he is here on our soil.

    • He was trying to maneuver his hand on top as a position of power. It does come across as limp wristed but that was not his intent. Unfortunately for Putin it did not work

  2. One might label the headline (which accurately refers to Putin as a pariah) as reflecting bias, but, unused as I am to straightforward reporting these days, that’s what the quoted portion of the article is.

Was there red carpet treatment? Yes. Did Trump applaud? Yes. Did he offer Putin a ride in The Beast? Yes. Was there a military flyover? Yes. Was there a handshake? Yes. Was this extraordinary? Yes. Was it the first time an American president has given VIP treatment to a Russian leader who faces an arrest warrant? Maybe, probably.

Some may find simple statement of fact to be contemptible. I find it a refreshing change from the editorializing normally found in what passes for news articles these days. Making an opponent (Putin is an opponent, right?) favorably disposed can be helpful in negotiations; kowtowing, and this was close to that, can be counterproductive in great power negotiations. There is a reason the visit is being hailed among our adversaries and criticized by our allies. Fortunately, the military flyover compensated a bit for the excessive use of honey.

Something good may yet come of the meeting, although not according to the indications so far, and if so, that would help to validate the ‘honey’ approach. On the other hand, it sure seems Putin came out ahead, has once more delayed any real consequences for his brutal attempt to take territory by force, and may ultimately take even more of Ukraine than he did in his illegal seizure of Crimea in 2014.

I will have to admit, however, that Putin showed he deserved the exceptional hospitality he received by showing up wearing a proper suit.

    • The technique is called “poisoning the well,” and deliberately placing a negative spin on an event that should be reported objectively. Emphasizing a meaningless arrest warrant is exactly like the reports on Trump’s campaign always mentioning the dubious convictions in New York.

“I will have to admit, however, that Putin showed he deserved the exceptional hospitality he received by showing up wearing a proper suit.” Sarcasm, but in fact correct. World Leaders meeting are wise, as well and correct, to show each other proper respect. Maybe you don’t get the “negotiation thingy.” The story’s carping on such details as “the red carpet” and applauding show naivete, ignorance, and unmasked hostility to the President. Trump clearly knows what he is doing, and the Daily Beast either does not, or is pretending not to to suck up to its Trump-hating readers.
