What the hell?
I’m seriously considering letting Ethics Alarms comment-bomber and New York Times/Axis News Media apologist “A Friend” try to defend this.
Neither the reporter who wrote the story nor the editors who passed on it, nor anyone else in the draft-to-publication process, knows what NATO stands for, yet the paper presumes to opine about it. And this isn’t Weekly Reader; this is the New York Times, supposedly the gold standard for U.S. journalism.
Why would anyone trust a news source that would do something this incompetent and careless?
Ethics Alarms

The North American Treaty Organization is the organization that allows the Blue Jays to compete in Major League Baseball and allows American teams to compete in the National Hockey League. Also, while Canadian basketball teams are permitted to compete in the National Basketball Association, no such agreement has been reached between the football leagues. Trump has long sought to withdraw the U.S. from the organization as part of killing NAFTA.

The response of the commenters on the NYT apology is that the apology is not accepted. The NYT mistake is not due to a brain fart but due to laziness and bad faith reporting.
