Ethics Quiz: “The View”

Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr has filed an “equal time” complaint against “The View.” The decades-old “Equal Time” mandate requires that broadcast entertainment shows offer equal time to both parties when interviewing political candidates. The FCC has an exemption for “bona fide” news interviews, and anyone who calls that mess above a genuine news interview couldn’t tell a raven from a writing desk.*

Here is how that supposedly non-partisan political news site Politico describes the action: “The regulatory filing marked the latest stage in a confrontation between the broadcasting networks and Carr, who has used his tenure atop the nominally independent FCC to wage a series of fights against perceived foes of President Donald Trump.” You see, this is the Catch-22 the Axis has been applying with great success against legitimate Trump Administration enforcement of the law when Democrats and Trump foes are violating it. If the law is legitimately enforced but the violator is an Axis ally, then by definition the enforcement is politically motivated revenge.

Legitimate news shows are immune from Equal Time requirements, entertainment shows are not. The screaming ladies of the View do not convey news, do mot have informed opinions, do not care about facts or accuracy, They just vent. This daily farce is as entertaining as the Jerry Springer Show when an angry middle-aged fat lady would try to punch out their cheating redneck hubby’s teenage squeeze—me, I prefer “La Traviatta.” But entertaining or not, The View sure isn’t a genuine news program. It is more like a reality show satire of what a Sunday morning talking head show would be like if everyone around the table was brain-damaged.

Your Ethics Alarms Ethics Quiz of the Day is…

Should “The View” be subject to the FCC equal time Rule, as “Colbert” was when his show tried to boost James Talerico in the Texas Democratic Primary?

(Or as Saturday Night Live should have been when it turned its show into a campaign ad for Kamala Harris the weekend before the 2024 election?)

My position is that “The View” is a farce, that it makes viewers dumber, and cannot possibly be called a “news show” any more than Jimmy Kimmel’s nightly partisan rants make his late night show a news show. If there is going to be an equal time rule, enforce it. If it is going to be enforced, “The View” is fair game. If the rule won’t be used to stop partisan propaganda masquerading as entertainment, then junk the rule, though the way one party controls the media now, the equal time rule is more needed than ever,

  1. What I found likeable is that Vance could track with the “attitude vibe”.

It has been said that every “no” answer to a request is merely one point in a negotiation.

What these ladies were presenting to him were a rapid series of attitude obstacles. I will assert that there were lots of people who were impressed with his ability to hang with the ladies’ flack attack and receive it amiably. He communicated that it was about perceived truth but in accordance to a format of entertainment.

“We’ll send you guys the photo.” was a perfect closer.

    • Ana Navarro is one of those people who makes me feel like an abject failure. She’s obnoxious, not very bright, not attractive. wise or pleasant. And she has a speech impediment! Why is she on TV?

  2. Don’t know how anyone with even half a brain could classify the View as a news show. It is more a collection of obnoxious, shrill harpies. If that’s a news show then so is Gutfeld!, which is, at least funny.

    • Its all because Baba Walters launched it and sort-of kept it on track as the moderator. When she died, all hint of a legitimate news show evaporated. Whoopie is the smartest one left, and she is only smart in comparison to most actresses. She’s a high-school drop out, and severely under-read and under-educated. Those deficiencies show up often.

  3. *Alice in Wonderland: “Why is a raven like a writing desk?” (Answer: They both have quills).

Anyway, does Vance really count as a political candidate if he’s not running for office?

  4. I don’t consider it a news show but it would appear that they consider it a news show. This is similar to young people getting their news from Colbert and Stewart. Who gets their news from “The View”? Far-Left middle-aged women?

  5. Forget the equal access rule. All these shows need to be reported to the FEC. Their budget needs to be reported as donations in-kind to the DNC. The DNC then needs to be fined for not reporting these donations. Then, they can be regulated as a propaganda network.
