And “The Great Stupid” Crawls On: White Female Executive Fired Because Her Hairstyle Was Too Black

Proving just how badly “The Great Stupid” damaged brains in woke Maryland, the state passed the CROWN Act in May 2020. CROWN stands for “Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair,” or “Black Hair Matters.” The law made it a crime to discriminate on the basis of hairstyles associated with African or Black culture. Nobody imagined then that a funky arts organization would discriminate against a woman adopting one of those styles because she isn’t black.

“Had the Baltimore Rock Opera simply separated from this individual without providing a discriminatory reason; the timeline would be all of the evidence that the fired employee would have. But here, when you’re making comments publicly that lean into the discriminatory allegation made by the fired employees, that itself could be evidence of the fact that you were terminated wrongfully, meaning that it’s discrimination under CROWN,” Carnes’ lawyer said. Of course they made it clear they were firing her because she was a white woman engaging in “cultural appropriation.” The organization was pandering to blacks on the staff. Virtue signalling, because in today’s woke climate, discriminating against whites (and, you know, Jews) is considered virtuous.

It is condign justice that a white woman will be the beneficiary of such a bonkers law. I realize now that in Maryland, my assertion here that I wouldn’t hire a woman to represent my company who wore these things…

…would be considered illegal discrimination in Maryland.

Jonathan Turley, whose blog post alerted me to the story, wrote in disgust,

“Under the state’s discrimination laws, cornrows are clearly not a matter that would ‘reasonably preclude the performance of the employment.’ It is an objection to the appearance of employees based on racial bias or intolerance. In my view, this is clearly racial discrimination as well as an abridgment of free expression. This is even clearer after Maryland enacted the CROWN Act, which defines race for anti-discrimination protections to include ‘traits associated with race,’ such as hair texture, Afro hairstyles, and protective hairstyles. The fact that this was passed with reference to protect African American employees is not determinative. Carnes was fired because of her race and the adoption of a rule barring hairstyles on a racial basis.Maryland said that it wanted to protect hairstyles. This may not be the litigant that they had in mind, but it is the same form of racial discrimination.”

That the board of this silly organization was unable to discern this seemingly obvious fact is powerful evidence of how warped perceptions of right and wrong have become in the Age of The Great Stupid. However, the prospect of condign justice descending on these woke fools in the form of a law passed to protect only “persons of color” is invigorating.

Or, as Flounder said (in a memorable “Animal House” moment that will be #48 in the Ethics Alarms Hollywood Clip Archive,

  1. Identity politics is the ruination of our society, creating hyper-sensitivity to … well … everything. Cultural appropriation is a dangerously stupid concept, resulting in rreeaallllyy stupid behavior. I generally don’t care for lawsuits, but I hope this woman sues the crap out of this cowardly and moronic organization.

And their answer to this mess is more sensitivity training. Four words, a handful of seconds – ‘mind your own business.’ And get back to work. I don’t know if the CROWN Act is unconstitutional (not a lawyer), but it certainly reinforces the segmentation of the population. How does it harm anyone that this woman is wearing cornrows? Cultural appropriation? So what. If she wears hair or clothing styles adapted from another culture is she not celebrating and admiring that culture? Believe me, most women don’t wear a style to insult or denigrate. Style is utilitarian or flattering or trendy – not usually a political statement.

What about Levi’s? Born in the USA, yet worn worldwide. French bikinis, Italian tailored suits – in demand worldwide. Does Vera Wang sell bridal gowns only in America? How about Calvin Klein underwear? The global market has profited companies enormously, which would not have occurred had style remained ‘cultural.’

    Idiots
