This makes me curious once again about what caused my son, at the tender age of 16, tell us that he would not need to use his college fund for a college education he felt would be superfluous and just interfere with what he knew he wanted to do and could start right away. Did my attitude somehow influence him? I swear I never said a word to him about my growing contempt and disillusionment regarding Harvard and universities generally. But, as Stephen Sondheim wrote, “Children will listen”….
Smart kids observe those around them as they find their passions. Kudos to him for speaking up! So many don’t, afraid they will disappoint their family. One young gal was being pushed by a parent to go to an Ivy League medical school. She was getting more stressed as decision time grew closer. I asked her, “What gets you excited to get up in the morning?” Her answer, “Writing.” After explaining to the parent the difference between his dream and hers, she embarked on a fascinating writing career in preventative medicine.
Note that that memo evidences that there are at least three deans of “Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging”. And some wonder why college costs have become so outrageous.
Harvard is easily making Trade Schools look more beckoning and valuable.
