Ethics Alarms 
The only rational explanation can be that all her colleagues played a practical joke on her. They all agreed that they would “strut their stuff” and wear something fun and sexy, and then at the last minute they all talked with each other, except Ariel, and said, “Dress business casual”. Boy, that was good one!
On a serious note, she probably got influenced by Kendall Jenner and Miley Cyrus too much, and just grandstanding and doing the “I need to make a name for myself, so I have to be sexy and raunchy, because that’s the only way a young lady can get ahead in the show biz nowadays”. And it’s going to work too, I bet there will be people saying that it was a brave and courageous outfit, she’s an individual, she’s empowering women, she take’s risks, she’s not going to have “society” (to be said in a snarky tone) define who she is and so on and so forth. The only criticism to her that will be considered valid will be from women. But that will be brushed away. Any criticism from a man will be interpreted as a sexist comment, and that man will be admonished for it.
Good analysis. I thought of the practical joke angle as well: It would be like telling someone that a party was a costume party.
Of course, there is no formal occasion in which THAT would be tasteful attire, except maybe a stripper’s ball.
Yeah, what is she saying about who she is, and how she wants fans to see her? That will not get her the kind of roles to broaden her range and lengthen her career, unless Vegas is her career goal. Her coaches are failing her long term interests.
I linked to her bio, because she has had some rough influences. She plays the intellectual, plainish younger sister of a nascent sexy bimbo on the show. She had a dysfunctional family, and is estranged from it. She had very public breast reduction surgery after her increasingly outlandish curves made her a tabloid sensation at 15. She has become a prominent opponent of body-shaming. I understand why she’s off track, but she needs some good advice. And a better designer.
She told a reporter from People (in an article about her reasons for breast reduction), “It made me feel really uncomfortable, because as women in the industry, we are totally oversexualized and treated like objects.”
Hence she dresses like that for a casual cast appearance. Boy—she’s complex.
I always wiki these entertainment people. It’s stunning how many come from what used to be called “broken” families. The second line in the biography section is invariably, “his/her parents divorced when he/she was [three or four or five].” Do kids of divorce make good entertainers and actors and actresses? Maybe they grow up seeking attention. A mystery.
I also invariably end up asking myself, “Why isn’t that girl wearing a blouse? Did she forget?”
It’s as if there’s an entire generation of girls who grew up believing and responding to the signs bands used to put up on their tour buses that read “Show us your tits.”
By the way, I thought nothing of Mila’s outfit when I first saw the photo and had no idea that would be the subject of the post. Tells you how well I’ve been conditioned by the Kardashian generation and their handlers and enablers.

This is one of the ONLY two network offerings I watch, “Last Man Standing” being the other.
IMHO, clearly the best character on Modern Family, one I’d love to see more of, is Nathan Lane’s “Pepper” Saltzman, which he nails with highfreakin’larious aplomb!

First given reason was that ABC had to pick up production costs (Fox paid until this season), and Tim Allen’s salary was too high.
Never mind that the cast of Modern Family made fare more per episode, or that the ratings for Tim Allen were great.
Second (deduced) reason may be confirmation bias, but is logical given TV today: ABC killed a show with proto conservative content and made up an excuse as to why they did
Vox listed 5 reasons: 1) the show is old, and old shows keep getting more expensive 2) the demographics were not in the core target audience for advertisers 3) the show wasn’t an ABC production (which also means it could be picked up by another network), 4) The ABC line-up needed some openings because it is bringing back American Idol (from Fox), requiring two hours a week, and 5) the conservative issue probably didn’t help any.
But remember, saying that ABC canned the show for the ideological reasons is like saying Trump canned Comey because of the Russian investigation.

Because if so, then yes, I agree that those two beliefs are similarly valid.

I didn’t say it was the only reason. You previously said the firing had “nothing to do with the Russia investigation,” which totally contradicts Trump’s statement; you have still not admitted you were wrong on this point.

No, the reason that makes sense should be trusted, and the reasons that don’t make sense can be discounted as bullshit. This is just called “logic,” not “Chris logic.”

I think our celebrities like to “push the envelope” and be edgy. For some reason women are more likely to commit the fashion crimes. I agree that in polite company, let’s say a dinner party in D.C., you wouldn’t catch anyone dead in an outfit like that. They would be interpreted as somebody’s mistress that somehow stumbled in. But among the younger folk, it would be seen as the norm. Either the culture of young people is severely lacking, or it’s just an age thing and you grow out of it. Although, I think for some it can be terminal. (Caution, scandalous PG-13 fashion crime)

She’s beautiful, young, and an adult. She’s still figuring out her own tastes and personal boundaries. All the essential things are covered. Let her be, lest we go full-on Taliban.
Who’s stopping her? Someone who’s caring should just tell her that visually screaming “LOOK! LOOK AT ME!!! HEY! ME!!!” is neither thoughtful, respectful of associates and colleagues, mature, professional or attractive.
She’s an actress. Her whole job, and future job prospects, rely on, “LOOK! LOOK AT ME!!! HEY! ME!!!” Though if anything, she’s actually overdressed for the occasion, which I hardly think of as immature or disrespectful. Winters normally plays the mud hen to her other two costars. Perhaps this is her way of reminding casting directors that she actually is quite good looking with a nice body. It worked for Jennifer Lawrence back in her day, so Ms. Winter may just be copying the formula.

All essential things are covered in a bikini; does that make it appropriate attire, for such an event? Same for “Phil”; if he chose to wear a speedo, or Daisy Dukes and a tank top? Seriously, you dont see this outfit as at all out of whack with the event, and what the rest of the cast is wearing?
Having said that, good point about the eyeful served up by “Gloria” weekly; had she been in attendance, Ariel actually might have fit in with her chosen outfit.

For the occasion, it’s ridiculous. It’s also ugly (that hemline, on that dress… ugh.)
But in terms of general shock value, it’s no Lil’ Kim-at-the-1999-VMAs. Actually, it looks a lot like a shorter version of the dress Heidi Klum wore to the 2013 Oscars. Of course, Heidi knows how to pick an appropriate hemline and occasion.
I think Jack & the other gentleman here don’t have a clue about what it’s like to be a 19 year old girl/woman (and yes I mean a woman not some dude in a dress) and trying to find your way in a society tells you to be sexy but not too sexy. At that age your learning where to draw the lines in personal expression. This means an occasional or even frequent showcase of poor fashion choices. At 16 I wore skintight miniskirts in -5 degree weather. Luckily I had some strong ladies in my life that taught me the art of being a lady…something many consider laughable now…as if being a lady is archaic & dumb.
Anyway I hope she can find a gracious & graceful woman in her life to help her realize, as I and many women have had to do to, that she need not dress that way to be sexy & intriguing.

Sorry to respond so late. Yes I do think being 19 is an excuse because 19 year old girls especially at that age are figuring out their ethics & standards. This involves making some (awful) mistakes including poor costume choices. It’s something most women at that age deal with, they’re just usually not up for mass public scrutiny & condemnation.
Maybe at 19 Jack you knew what to wear, how to think, who you were, and all that stuff, but the rest of us were learning then (and still are).

Ah yes, the unavoidable 800 pound anatomical specificity in the room: to look or not to look, that is the question. Whether ’tis nobler…well, you get the picture.
It seems “Looking” is acceptable to the “Looked at” under very strictly enforced personal ”screening,” it’s O.K. for “certain lookers” to indulge, the rest of us are over-sexed, objectifying pervs.

She grew up in show business and has had issues for years — in addition to the breast reduction, there were charges that she was the victim of statutory rape. And I think her parents are messed up. The outfit is awful, but that is the least of her problems. I wonder if she got a stern talking to from someone at Disney — who owns both Modern Family and Sofia the First. No one wants to see Princess Sofia dressed like that.
All your suggested topics are off in my opinion — they would be more applicable to a seemingly normal person showing up for an event like that. The appropriate discussion topic should be, “Why you shouldn’t let your child go into professional acting.”
Seems to me we have seen THAT observation before. And we all agreed that the odds are against the child when they join the glitterati.
That is indeed a relevant topic, and Ariel a prime catalyst for one. (She says she wants to be a lawyer if acting doesn’t work out.)
