Liberal investigative journalist Glenn Greenwald resigned today from The Intercept after the publication he co-founded censored a column in which he called out Joe Biden based on newly released documents regarding Biden’s conduct in the Ukraine and China.
“The final, precipitating cause [of resignation] is that The Intercept’s editors, in violation of my contractual right of editorial freedom, censored an article I wrote this week, refusing to publish it unless I remove all sections critical of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden,” Greenwald wrote. He condemned “all New-York-based Intercept editors,” saying that they “vehemently” support Biden. “Modern media outlets do not air dissent; they quash it. ”
Greenwald said he would continue publishing a freelance column, joining a number of journalists such as Matt Taibbi and Andrew Sullivan who have moved their work to the independent publishing platform Substack.
He criticized his former publication for “a deep fear of offending hegemonic cultural liberalism and center-left Twitter luminaries, and an overarching need to secure the approval and admiration of the very mainstream media outlets we created The Intercept to oppose, critique and subvert.”
That sounds about right.
The determination of the mainstream media and others to keep the full significance of the Biden scandal away from as much of the public as possible is now as undeniable asn it is ominous. If Biden indeed wins, it will be the most flagrant example of US media news manipulation in our history.
Greenwald has been one of the nation’s most courageous and non-partisan truth-tellers, and his protest demonstrates how dire the situation has become. Naturally, his former publication is ridiculing his stand, sending the message that there is nothing to see here.
Intercept’s Betsy Reed called him “a grown person throwing a tantrum.”.
“While he accuses us of political bias, it was he who was attempting to recycle a political campaign’s—the Trump campaign’s—dubious claims and launder them as journalism,” Reed said in a statement. “We have the greatest respect for the journalist Glenn Greenwald used to be.”
On the podcast The Joe Rogan Experience, Greenwald characterized the media’s dogged protection of Biden, saying,
“They’re all desperate for Trump to lose. They don’t want to be scorned in their social circles. And so they’re willing to abdicate their journalistic function, which is reporting on one of the most powerful people in the world, and Joe Biden in part because they want to manipulate and tinker with the election using journalism, but a much bigger part because they’re scared of being yelled at on Twitter.”
Enemies of truth, enemies of an informed public, enemies of democracy, enemies of the people.
