Representative Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) demonstrated once again that a critical mass of conservative Republicans just can’t stop themselves from embodying the worst stereotypes imprinted on the public by progressives and the news media.
He actually said that some videos of the January 6 riot at the Capitol looked like scenes from a “normal tourist visit.” He really said this. No, I wouldn’t lie to you, he really did. What an idiot.
It is no mitigation that Clyde stuck his entire leg up to the hip into his mouth in the course of correctly condemning the ongoing Big Lie that the embarrassing mob of Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol were engaging in an “insurrection.” It was such a stupid thing for him to say that it disqualified Clyde as an authority, a respectable commentator, or a trustworthy public official.
Comparing the riot to a “normal tourist visit” isn’t just sort of like calling the George Floyd riots “mostly peaceful protests,” it’s exactly the same gas-lighting, dishonest idiocy. Exactly.
Clyde, or ideally someone with more sense than God gave a brine shrimp, needed to call out the Democrats on their continuing false narrative about what happened on January 6, but Clyde was so incompetent that he gave that narrative more credibility rather than less. Naturally, the “insurrection” propagandists had a field day afterwards. “Nothing makes my blood boil more than Republicans whitewashing the Capitol Insurrection,” Representative David Cicilline (D-R.I.) wrote on Twitter “Three cops died. 140 injured, including one who lost an eye and another who lost three fingers. 38 caught COVID.”
Three cops did not die in the riot; no cops died, and only one protester perished. She was unarmed, and she was shot by an officer who has managed to duck accountability because his identity has been withheld by the public (and no journalist has had the objectivity and independence to uncover it. If only the victim had been black…). The Democrats even went to the exorbitant lengths of having Officer Sicknick lie in state in the Rotunda to cement the idea that he was a riot victim. In fact, he died of two strokes unrelated to the events of the 6th.
MSNBC ‘s Capitol Hill correspondent Leigh Ann Caldwell, playing Big Lie Poker, then saw Cicilline’s three cops and raised it to five, asking Clyde in front of the cameras. “Do you regret saying that? Five, five people died including police officers.”
Thus are Americans who believe the press confused, deceived, and manipulated.
However, attempting to confuse, deceive, and manipulate them in another direction is not the remedy.
