That Emergency Open Forum Two Weeks Ago Was Such A Blast, Let’s Do It Again!

Fortuitously, this time the emergency room visit is occurring on a Friday, when an open forum would normally occur anyway! What luck! Calloo callay!

Go crazy with ethics analysis and provocation, please. I’ll see ya when I see ya…

  1. To compound my problem, I was in such a rush that WordPress’s recent double-click publishing trick…”Wait, are you REALLY ready to publish the post you already posted “publish” for?…caught me again.

  2. How about we try to discuss the ethics of completely disconnecting from politics and political discussions because both sides of the political aisle make you so damned sick and tired that all you want to do is figuratively insert a tactical nuke up your nasal passage and light the fuse which would be kinda messy…

Seriously, I’ve been noticing a trend over the last year where those that once regularly conversed about politics have gone dark. Are they trying to isolate themselves and hold on to a shred of sanity as the world around them seems to be crumbling?

      • I get a lot of static from Mrs. OB (well deserved, of course) for getting too wound up about stuff. She says there’s nothing to be done about it and it’s up to the younger generations to figure things out for themselves. I was told earlier this week by a Trump deranged email correspondent to “take a chill pill” because I called the Clintons grifters by comparison after suggesting Trump was, to use HRC’s term, “living rent free in his [the correspondent’s] brain.” This is someone who considers the January 6 riot an insurrection. He’s a lawyer, no less!

So yes, there is a large impetus to simply walk away shaking one’s head. Maybe the younger generation simply needs to learn by making its own mistakes. We’re evidently back to Old Testament times. Turn around and next thing you know, the Israelites are worshiping a new golden calf. Sigh.

    • Can’t we see that…

…and that our participation in the political system, right down to intelligent debating others, is crucial to not allowing our system of government, our Constitution, our country and our culture to be destroyed by an irretrievably broken ideological divide and intentional cultural division?

We’re not just failing as a culture and a country but we’re failing as intelligent human beings.

      • Merely agreeing stop pursuing the good at the point where we agree on what is good seems… impossible to ask of humans.

We will always focus on our differences. The goal here is to be able to hash out our differences in such a way that we are fine with the process working and being somewhat determinative and the “losers” losing gracefully. This can only happen if there seems to be an acceptance that nothing is actually final, that changes that end up being bad can be remedied with no pride harmed, if losers aren’t convinced winners are going to annihilate them, and if we can decide that some impasses are best left as impasses at some higher level and agree to allow smaller more local organizations handle decisions.

We will not get past this, and again to beat a dead horse, the Left increasingly wants ITS societal changes to FINAL and UNCHANGING, never assessed for value after changes are implemented, increasingly remind losers that they indeed want to annihilate them, and do not ever want decisions left to the most subsidiary elements of society.

    • There are so damn many stupid people out there screaming their utter nonsense at the top of their lungs to the hoards of dumbasses that have earned too many participation trophies to know that they’re fools and these fools think they’re right about everything and everyone that opposes them are wrong?! All the while I’m lookin on and thinking What the Fuck are we doing letting these dumbasses take control of our country and culture.

Well here’s what I say to all those dumbasses…

…I’m going to fight you dumbasses to the ends of the earth until there are either none of you dumbasses left screaming your nonsense or I’m dead.

      I will NOT stand down!

      • People are definitely hiding from the dumpster fires we used to call culture, politics and media. The younger generations are not exclusively populated by whack jobs and Marxists, despite the claims of the media and social media. The normal millennial and genz people are hiding. Why? The complete and total loss of privacy for everyday people. Even if you never used the internet, from birth, private details of your life will still be splashed far and wide across the internet. Your address. Your phone number. Who you are related to. Did you register as a Republican in a state with party declarations? Well, that is now googleable!! No jobs for you! Donate to a cause that isn’t left of Mao? Well, there it is on Google, courtesy of a hacker. No jobs for you! People’s entire lives are now subject to the judgment of others, and that matters. You cannot have your data removed. You don’t get to decide you want to be a private citizen. The internet knows all.

Older people who are well established can blow off such concerns, but young people are basically being subjected to a social credit system that demands far leftwing conformity in every waking decision. They cannot hide from it, and it controls their lives.

People are terrified. Most people just want to live a normal, private, slightly better than mediocre life by pursuing traditional goals like getting a decent job, buying a house, finding a spouse, having a couple kids, and being able to retire at some point before death. Most people have no interest in being political warriors or fighting the powers that be. Most people are not brave or heroic. Most people are being silenced by fear of losing access to the things they want in life.

You aren’t going to see most people fight back until it becomes clear to them that they are already screwed, and they have nothing left to lose. The media is working very hard to prevent people from having that realization.

        • Super informative comment of the day. Thanks. Terrifying, but, speaking as a 70-year-old with two terrifyingly woke forty-something kids, good to know.

A few years back, someone shared here a Silicon Valley conference they attended decades ago dealing with exactly this; wish I’d archived it.

The conclusions were that an intentional cultural change was afoot that would be so slow (albeit inexorable) that it would be barely perceptible. At the time I asked them when-n-where and they couldn’t remember.

          • I had an industrial psychology professor who used to walk around muttering to himself about social media, text analysis, mind control, SPSS and big data. At the time, I thought he was crazy. Now I know exactly what he was worried about.

          • Paul W Schlecht wrote“A few years back, someone shared here a Silicon Valley conference they attended decades ago dealing with exactly this; wish I’d archived it.”

I found this sorta related article that slickwilly shared in July of 2018 about social media…

“There is growing concern that as well as addicting users, technology is contributing to so-called continuous partial attention, severely limiting people’s ability to focus, and possibly lowering IQ. One recent study showed that the mere presence of smartphones damages cognitive capacity — even when the device is turned off. “Everyone is distracted,” Rosenstein says. “All of the time.””

“But those concerns are trivial compared with the devastating impact upon the political system that some of Rosenstein’s peers believe can be attributed to the rise of social media and the attention-based market that drives it. Drawing a straight line between addiction to social media and political earthquakes like Brexit and the rise of Donald Trump, they contend that digital forces have upended the political system and, left unchecked, could even render democracy as we know it obsolete.”

  3. If THIS REPORT is accurate, I don’t think there’s any question that it’s unethical.. Supposedly the CDC has tried to surreptitiously move the goalposts and lower the metrics for “speech in early childhood development” (word and language usage ability expected at certain age markers) to hide (mask? 😉 ) the harm done by lockdowns and masking on children’s language skills.

Anybody care to suggest another reason why the CDC might do this sort of thing, on the sly, or is it just another example of how untrustworthy and politically driven certain purveyors of SCIENCE! have become?

    • Words don’t have definitions anymore. Science stopped being science a while ago. Propaganda and reality have fused to create some sort of pseudo reality that about 60% of the western world is living in, and the other 40% of the western world is either furious or scared shitless. I don’t know what to make of all this.
