Most Unethical Non-Criminal Cabinet Member In History?

Well, I don’t know. Quite a few Cabinet members have been convicted of crimes in office, and the Biden Cabinet has other bad apples, notably Attorney General Merrick Garland. Still, it’s hard to imagine any federal department head more incompetent or guilty of dereliction of duty than Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Or more of a weasel. To be fair, he is the first Cuban-born Homeland Security Secretary, which makes him “historic” and yet another diversity feather in the current Democratic regime’s cap. And after all, that’s what’s really important, right?

I wish I were kidding.

Mayorkas, you no doubt recall, says that our Southern border is “secure,” apparently using the archaic definition of “secure” that meant “as porous as cheesecloth” in Chaucerian English. He also attempted to install an Orwellian “Disinformation Governance Board, until even the Democratic Party’s captive news media objected, which always signals that the Left’s totalitarian aspirations are getting ahead of themselves. But he really secured his place in the U.S. Cabinet Members Chamber of Horrors, it has now been revealed, by deliberately condemning border agents of whipping illegal immigrants along the Texas-Mexico border when he knew the allegations were false.

He should have known the claims were false when President Biden said they were true, since a gambler would make money over the long term betting that anything the President asserts is mistaken, false, or imaginary. In this case, however, Mayorkas didn’t have to gamble. Email records, revealed by Fox News (you didn’t expect, say, the New York Times to inform the public about this, did you?) show that Mayorkas knew that the media stories about agents on horseback “whipping” the illegals were false and that even the photographer who took the photos expressly denied that any whipping occurred. Never mind: Mayorkas supported President Biden’s false accusations anyway, and the media’s narrative, condemning the agents as once again acting out “systemic racism.”

Mayorkas quite simply didn’t have the guts, integrity or honesty to tell the truth when he knew it meant derailing another Democratic Party/mainstream media Big Lie. Biden bellowed that “it was horrible what — to see, as you saw — to see people treated like they did: horses nearly running them over and people being strapped. It’s outrageous. I promise you, those people will pay. There will be an investigation underway now, and there will be consequences. There will be consequences.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi decried “the inappropriate use of what appear to be whips by Border Patrol officers on horseback to intimidate migrants.” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed horror at the “images of inhumane treatment of Haitian migrants by Border Patrol — including the use of whips.” Kamala Harris, consoling her intellectual equals on “The View,” wailed about how “the whipping” “invoked images of some of the worst moments of our history, where that kind of behavior has been used against the Indigenous people of our country, it has been used against African Americans during times of slavery.”  Maxine Waters and Ayanna Pressley–“Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly”—described the incident as “worse than what we witnessed in slavery” and “white supremacist behavior.”

Except, of course, that no whipping occurred. On Sept. 24, 2021, after the President’s typically clueless and inflammatory comments,Marsha Espinosa, assistant secretary of DHS public affairs, emailed Mayorkas and copied other DHS leadership setting the record straight: no whipping. Never mind: like the Good German he is (Good Cuban? Good Democrat?) Mayorkas went before the media to declare how “Our nation saw horrifying images that do not reflect who we are. We know that those images painfully conjured up the worst elements of our nation’s ongoing battle against systemic racism,” and that the “whipping” was “something that horrified us all” and “defies all of the values that we seek to instill in our people.”

What values would those be, I wonder?

Jonathan Turley, who has clearly lost all patience with and respect for the Biden Administration, was uncharacteristically unrestrained in his disgust:

Mayorkas betrayed not just his agents but his oath to “well and faithfully discharge” the duties of his office in his handling of the “whipping scandal”…There is no good spin for a secretary known for almost planet-sized shifts. Either Mayorkas saw the email or he made little effort to discover the truth before trashing his own agents. The email went to various subordinates at the department and was based on public accounts. It would take willful blindness to avoid learning of the true story. The level of duplicity in Mayorkas’ conduct is breathtaking… the agents simply do not matter in Washington nor does the due process or basic fairness denied to them by their leaders. They are just some grunts on mounts to be used by the powerful as they see fit…they remain expendable to political expediencies. The innocence of these agents was immaterial when they became useful cutouts for a narrative of systemic racism….

President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas did not even have the decency to apologize to these agents and their families. They are props, not people.

….If there is any measure of decency and responsibility left in Washington, Mayorkas would resign. Ironically, he did precisely what the agents were accused of doing. He and the President flogged these agents in public because they did not warrant any respect or consideration. To use his own words, that is something that should horrify us all.

Yeah, I’m horrified. I’m just not surprised.

  1. A Cuban refugee? I did not know that! Who attended and graduated from UC Berkeley? Well, that explains it. A Cuban refugee who morphed into a standard issue lefty. Damnedest thing I’ve ever seen.

I’ve long considered him breath takingly unethical for being perhaps the most brazen liar I’ve ever seen.

  2. All political figures lie to some degree. I can understand lying to keep an embarrassing truth bottled up as long as possible when revealing it would be counterproductive. I can see lying when, as Churchill put it, the truth is so important that it needs to be protected with a bodyguard of lies. Government is simply not a field that lends itself to being all truthful all the time, and in fact, someone who is totally unwilling to lie, like Jimmy Carter, was not suited to it. However, this is not lying for any purpose other than to advance the administration, and, what is worse, it is throwing innocent employees under the bus. It is signature significance for saying that this administration is interested in nothing other than pushing its own agenda and it is willing to use individuals as simple pawns to be expended or sacrificed as they benefit the administration.

Does this sound like someone you’d want to work for? Does this sound like someone anyone should want to work for? If the Republicans regain the majority in just over 2 weeks, they’d be well within their rights to impeach Mayorkas for essentially discarding the oath of office by his actions. That doesn’t mean they should, because creating a media circus might be counterproductive, but using the threat as pressure to push Biden to can him (which Biden would do without a second thought if he was becoming a distraction) might work.

    • Where do Ron Klain and his crew find these people? Is government this full of useful idiots? Are there binders and binders of these creeps? No wonder Trump couldn’t find any government people to hire. They’re all cyphers.

  3. This is comparable to Hillary Clinton’s tenure as Secretary of State when she allowed the false narrative of a spontaneous demonstration over the trailer to an insignificant film online to explain the attack on an embassy and the murder of an American ambassador knowing full well it was a terrorist attack.

Or, I suppose, we could consider her a criminal for that and many other things.

Regardless, it seems to be the practice of the Obama Administration, of which this would seem to be the Third, to come up with lies despite knowing the truth of the matter, especially when the lies help bolster the administration or tear down the opposition.

    • Important point. Obama was an ethics villain and a destructive POTUS, whose accountability for a plague of problems was and still is shielded by the news media. I thought about thos after Putin’s attacks in retribution for pushback in the Crimea. Did any media source mention how Obama just shrugged off Putin’s seizure of that region?

      • Not that I’m aware of. It would have given Sarah Palin too much credibility after she’d warned about Putin’s expansionist designs and the Left laughed.

  4. Jack wrote, “Mayorkas supported President Biden’s false accusations anyway, and the media’s narrative, condemning the agents as once again acting out “systemic racism”.”

The tactical pattern that the political left is using is very, very clear and the following statement cannot be stated often enough…

“The political left has shown its pattern of propaganda lies within their narratives so many times since 2016 that it’s beyond me why anyone would blindly accept any narrative that the political left and their lapdog media actively push?”

    • When you don’t care about the world beyond your front yard, you can’t muster skepticism when it’s called for.

The dark side to this marvel of a country we have created is how credulous our comfortable, mostly happy citizens have shown themselves to be in the face of massive false or misleading news reports.

      • Exactly right! I fear that far too many of our citizens are so myopic and self-absorbed that they fail to grasp the significance of (or in many cases even pay attention to) political events or understand the historical precedents that point to the folly of many governmental policies and actions.
Our consumerist society has many people so concerned with “getting and having” rather than “becoming and being” that their priorities are permanently skewed toward comfort and self-indulgence, to the neglect of civic engagement.
