Friday Open Forum!

Is everything going to Hell, as my sister concludes at the conclusion of every conversation we have that wanders into world events and national politics?

Stay on topic, now; it’s ethics, not politics. I just had to reject a proffered comment that was just a screed against Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), who, I agree, appears to be the dumbest member of the Senate but who could probably clobber in Scrabble a dozen or more House members. Read the EA comment policies, Newcomers!

Now enlighten us…

  1. I Read the Embattled Columbia President’s Old Book About What We Owe Each Other. It’s … Not Good. (msn.com)

Will you look at this? It’s proof that the Israel issue is backfiring on the left. They thought this would be the next George Floyd, but it’s just causing the left to crack, as suddenly the hyper-credentialed visionaries are revealed as the budding tyrants they are, who do not seek the consent of those they govern, and in fact treat the desire for consent by the governed as an inconvenience at best.

Meantime, I’d add, the rank-and-file radicals are revealed as the narcissistic thugs and bullies they really are. Seven years ago, we pointed out that peaceful demonstrators don’t bring hammers and fireworks to demonstrations. Those going to make a “peaceful counterdemonstration” against those they disagree with don’t cart along clubs and body armor.  They really haven’t thought things through. They simply self-label as anti-fascist and anyone who disagrees even a little is a fascist with no value.

Tyrants and thugs – where last was THAT a match made in heaven?

    • “The state-enforced repression sweeping America’s universities.”

That’s the author’s concern? Kinda says it all, don’t it?

    • Did he really write “Joe Biden has made some genuinely moving speeches on the highest ideals of the American political tradition, and he really has overseen the best U.S. economic performance in at least a generation. “

When people call the media ‘fake news’, this is really what they mean.

    • The leftist elites have been convinced fascists or Communists for about 100 years. Until the 1940’s, our elites were googoogaagaa for fascism. Mussolini was the man. FDR sent his top people to learn the latest economics from him. The NRA director had a large portrait of Mussolini behind him in his office (not one of FDR). Government workers were required to read Mussolini’s work. The NRA and the virtual elimination of Congress were firmly rooted in fascism, or, as Mussolini preferred, ‘Corporatism’. In Corporatism, the government directs the companies based on the advice of ‘experts’. Small companies are discouraged because they are difficult to control, so the consolidation of the business world into huge corporations that follow the dictates of the state are essential (Wonder why small businesses were locked down, but large companies allowed to operate?). All of the Ivy League types and the media were fully on the bandwagon and claimed that the idea of liberal democracy was yesterday’s news. Only the later unpopularity of Hitler made them go underground with their ideas. We can see that those ideas are alive and well today.

  2. Canada’s election isn’t until 2025, but we’re absolutely in campaign season

You know how I know? The Liberals and NDP are lying about the conservatives. The quadrennial bitching about issues that the Canadian Conservatives have not and will not ever bring up.

“The Conservatives have signalled that they’d use the notwithstanding clause to override the charter in the matter of criminal justice. I could probably write a post on the clause on it’s own, but it’s basically a “fuck you, I do what I want” in Government form. Specifically, they alluded to invoking it to overrule the Supreme Court in matters of sentencing, because the Montreal Mosque Shooter might get parole.

    […]

But how did the Liberals take that? “The Conservatives will invoke the NWC, what other rights are on the docket? They’re coming for gay marriage! They’re coming for abortion! The sky is falling down!”

This is rich considering that the Trudeau Government just illegally invoked the Emergencies Act to freeze protestor bank accounts. But it’s also indicative of the next phase of sloganeering: The fearmongering.

Every election year we hear the same deluge of fear: They’re going to take away our rights. They’re going to repeal gay marriage. They’re going to criminalize abortion! We never do. We never even signal that we’re going to. The left inevitably gloms onto some idiot backbencher who says something almost objectionable and treats it like the a peek into the secret evil shadow party platform. Meanwhile, you know how you can trust we’re not going to do those things? Because we’ve had the opportunity to and we haven’t. Liberals want to say Poilievre is Harper 2.0? Sure. Harper had majority governments for a decade. He didn’t.”
