A quick historical note: Nazi Germany, in one of its euphemistically-named It Isn’t What It Is programs – this one called the Act for the Protection of Reich Currency – limited the amount of money Jews could take with them before leaving the country. They were fleeced of almost everything before they could go live somewhere else to ensure they would arrive in a foreign country with no money.

Donald Trump gained political power because of the hard left’s push towards lunacy and the presence of Donald Trump in politics has caused the political left to completely lose whatever connection they once had to reality and they are now certifiably delusional. This is what the left’s absurd ideological swing towards Orwellian socialism and Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) has done to the political left.

It is fascinating that this issue should arise just now, as literally just today I found out that Canada does, as a matter of fact, have an exit tax.
This is, as they say, based on a true story.
Let’s say that you are a U.S. citizen living in Canada. You’ve been there for years, as a resident alien, paying Canadian taxes (and presumably coordinating those with your U.S. taxes). You own a home somewhere in the United States, which you bought for $100k but is now worth $200k.
But now you decide you want to leave Canada and move back to the United States. Before you can leave, Canada will impose a tax on that home. You are ‘deemed’ to have sold it for the current market value ($200k) and immediately repurchased it for the same amount. Therefore you have a $100k gain on the home for Canadian tax purposes and have to declare that income and pay taxes on it.
The IRS couldn’t do that because the Supreme Court has been very clear that unrealized gains are not income within the meaning of the Sixteenth Amendment (which, by the by, is why wealth taxes are unconstitutional).
Apparently some time ago, someone very prominent left Canada having some large unrealized gains on his or her property. The Canadians were really pissed that this person got away without paying a ‘fair share’, so they passed this law.
This applies to any Canadian resident alien, of course, not just Americans. But wait: There’s more!
Remember I said that the IRS couldn’t get away with requiring this sort of tax. But there is a clause in the U.S. – Canada tax treaty that addresses this situation. A taxpayer who is hit with this Canadian tax can voluntarily do the same thing on his U.S. tax return, i.e. report a gain as if he sold his property at the current value and pay capital gains taxes on that income. But…since he has paid Canadian taxes on the income, he can get a U.S. tax credit for some or all of the Canadian tax he was forced to pay.
Eventually the taxpayer would likely sell the house and report the capital gain. But this way, some of the capital gain is reported early, Canada gets the tax money (they win) and the IRS does not (they lose).
Such is life down in tax land some days. We were kind of blown away by this one, honestly.
I wonder if a resident alien could sell a home at a profit, then move into (and rent) a Canadian apartment for a year or eighteen months, then depart. Thinking rhetorically…I wonder if their system still imposes the tax?

Why can’t everyone see? I think one of the biggest problems of all is that with so many in our country today conditioned to subsist on government handouts, the way the Democratic Party currently operates is viewed as a good thing. This is the portion of our populace that believes that it is acceptable to lie, cheat, and steal to get whatever you want. We have people who look at rich people leaving their states and are terrified that their government handouts will suffer for it.
I think there’s a similarity to how much we are indoctrinating socialism, government handouts and, shall we say, self-service to money pools provided to agencies with little oversight, and to the video in a previous post showing how little children in Gaza were indoctrinated to hate the Jews and want to kill them at any opportunity. They see the government as a system meant to provide free money, food, and services. It is those evil Republicans/capitalists that are trying to rob them of what is owed to them. It is the White Man who is constantly trying to oppress, suppress, disenfranchise, and keep anyone else in squalor. Those evil people need to be destroyed (except they need to be continually bilked to keep the gravy train running). Those evil people deserve whatever happens to them, and if they aren’t going to play along (by moving to another state), they need to be fleeced of every last farthing possible.
The Constitution doesn’t matter. Democracy only matters because they view “democracy” in the vein of two wolves and a sheep voting on what to eat for lunch. “Saving democracy” is nothing more than ensuring that there is a majority who will keep voting to siphon money into their own pockets.
I hate to be so cynical about this, but this really seems to be why the Democrats keep driving down the path they are on. They played the politics of greed and envy, enticed swaths of the population to succumb to those vices, and now that is the horse the Democrats get to ride to their own perdition. It almost makes me wonder if the creation of such a dependent class is a monster the Democratic powers fear going out of control and turning on them.
