Oh Great: Another Car Has Been Added To The Karmelo Anthony Ethics Train Wreck

Ethics Alarms first mentioned the Karmelo Anthony case a year ago in the context of how completely screwed up woke Minnesota has become. Anthony, a teen who allegedly stabbed an unarmed white student to death at a school track meet, is the beneficiary of a GoFundMe effort that raised a large sum of money. Many conservative pundits wrote that this was a black backlash against a racist white woman who had attracted large donations to support her when a black man posted a video on social media that caught her in the act of calling him a “nigger.” I wrote in part,

“Anthony, who is black, is accused of stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, who was white, to death during a rain delay at their high school track meet. Anthony has not faced trial yet and claims that he in innocent by reason of self-defense. The online fundraising campaign on his behalf has raised over a half-million dollars. The clear difference between that and [the racist white woman’s] ill-gotten booty: Anthony hasn’t been found guilty of anything yet, and raising money for his defense is not, as some are claiming, the same as rewarding him for murdering a white kid. The accused teen’s family is the object of this fundraising campaign, and it is not inherently endorsing a black kid murdering a white kid to show sympathy for his family with a contribution.”

This ethics train wreck is still running. Anthony’s trial is finally getting started, and, naturally, the usual race-hustlers and victim-mongers are already claiming that the young man is another victim of racism by evil whites. Protesters were out in front of the courthouse chanting “Self-defense is not a crime!” They have no idea whether Karmelo has a legitimate self-defense case, but he’s black, so that’s all they need to know that he’s being framed by the racist justice system.

  1. “World of George Floyd” is metaphorical. The trial is being held in Texas, not the Land of a Thousand Lakes. Threw me.

  2. Here’s on for the trial lawyers in the commentariat: does the fact a teen-aged defendant is decked out in a three-piece suit raise a justifiable presumption of guilt?

  3. The donations for Karmelo Anthony’s defense is racially motivated, according to the following AOL article:

    https://www.aol.com/articles/karmelo-anthony-still-raking-donations-034208000.html

The first-degree murder charge for Anthony, who is black, sparked a racially charged culture war, with supporters claiming he’s the victim of a justice system stacked against people of color.

An Anthony family spokesman said last year that the fundraising would go to “stand with us in the fight against white supremacy.”

The legal fund for Karmelo Anthony’s defense started in April 2025. The GoFundMe action in support of Shiloh Hendrix started in May 2025. The fundraiser for Karmelo Anthony was not a reaction to the fundraiser for Shiloh Hendrix, it was the other way around. If a murderer gets to fund his defense simply because he is black and his victim is white, then a women who used a racial slur against a boy stealing her stuff can also start a fund to wend off cancellation. I am still surprised that some people are OK with Karmelo Anthony’s legal fund but loose their shit about Shiloh Hendrix fund, as this suggest that using a racial slur is a bigger sin than a murder. Most murderers do not enjoy lavish defense funds, as most sane people believe that murders deserve just punishment. Imagine what the reaction would have been if Derek Chauvin had a defense fund of half a million dollars via on-line donations!

Conservative commentators had a field day pointing out all the racially tinted messages of on-line donators to Karmelo Anthony’s fund.

So this whole trial against Karmelo Anthony is not about murder but about race. Got it. Let’s say that this defense succeeds, what message will that send? I am afraid that the message is that if a black man kills a white person vigilante action (lynching) will offer a better chance of justice than the court system, and to prevent an open season on white people by blacks. White people are already on edge after the Irina Zarutska murder.

    • it isn’t white people that are on edge. It is civilized humans.

making it about color dilutes the cultural issue in our big cities.

      • This ethics trainwreck would not exist if the defendant (Karmelo Anthony) were not black, and his victim were not white. This is a similar scenario as OJ Simpson murdering Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. OJ was acquitted, and as later interviews with jurors from the majority black jury revealed was not perjury of Mark Fuhrman nor the glove that did not fit, but the desire to send a message because of the recent Rodney King riots in LA; the jury wanted to send a message about race.

So I think it is very proper to notice that white people are on edge seeing various forms of tribal behavior by black people related to the Karmelo Anthony trials. Examples:

        • One prospective juror whom prosecutors identified as African American said he would “…have a hard time putting a brother in jail.” This raises the question about whether black jurors are subject to bias in a trial for a black-on-white murder
        • The excessive crowdfunding for Karmelo Anthony’s defense, many of the donors adding a racially motivated comment when giving. I would love to see counter examples of such a sizable defense fund for a black on black murder.
        • The protests outside the courthouse with one African American guy chanting that “the only good cracker is a dead cracker”

Think about the last bullet point; a lot of black people do not like black people. Why would it be wrong for white people to notice that?

So the sad conclusion is that for a lot of people this trial is primarily about race more than about a murder.

  4. The prosecution argued that the last three black prospective jurors in the pool all work as educators, so their jobs were too connected to the circumstances of a student being killed on school property.

this one puzzles me. Unless they said something that would trigger that response, these may be bad strikes.

if no inquiry was done on their roles as educators that would have led to a challenge for cause, I would be more concerned as a defense lawyer that they may be inclined to convict someone who killed a student.

or that they may be reluctant to convict a student; it really could go either way.

here is where I would want to see a transcript

the defense may have a legitimate Batson challenge

  5. FWIW, Gofundme canceled Anthony’s account as against their terms re violent crimes. Another outfit accepted an account, but specified funds ongoing directly to legal defense . Looks like there have been attempts to circumvent this and divert funds to family & etc. Guess they were looking for a Floyd type gravy train off of their little criminal.

And there’s no “alleged ” about the stabbing, just his dubious claim of self defense.
