The “Safe Return” memorial overlooks the entrance to Squalicum Harbor at Zuanich Point Park in Billingham, Washington. Community leaders dedicated the 16-foot monument on Memorial Day, May 31, 1999 to honor commercial fishermen from the Bellingham area who died or disappeared at sea. The sculpture features an eight-foot bronze fisherman casting a mooring line as he returns to port. He stands on a 19-ton block of red granite, bearing the names of local fishermen who never made it safely home.
But the statue is racist, you see. That fisherman is really out to lynch a black man. He’s carrying a noose, right?
At least that’s what Cara M. Munoz thought as she harassed workmen cleaning graffiti off the memorial. It may have been what the idiots who defaced the memorial thought too.
“What is that? You don’t want to respond? But that’s OK,” Munoz shouted. “Are you going to do anything about the noose hanging above your head?…“That’s a noose.That is a hate symbol by definition.” She continued to harass the workers until police arrested her on charges second-degree malicious mischief. Then she spit on the officers.
Munoz is proud of her stand against “white supremacy” and all those lynchings performed by fisherman in Washington. She posted several videos of her confrontation with the workers. These people are so certain they are righteous and reasonable in their indignation. The summer of 2020 permanently damaged their brains and personalities. I’m surprised Cara wasn’t wearing a mask, too.
The Great Stupid is particularly intense and contagious in Washington as well as its West Coast neighbors Oregon and California. I think it should be a recognized legal defense when sufferers like poor Cara behave like this.
Ethics Alarms 
People like Cara think that they are fighting some existential enemy and they want to be a “hero” by protecting others from… something. That’s why they post videos of themselves doing their “heroic” actions, because being a savior is like the proverbial tree falling in the forest – no sound (or appreciation) if no one can see it. Totally delusional, of course.
I doubt pre-Civil War escaped slave hunters wore ball caps and rubber boots.
I saw this story yesterday and contemplated submitting it in today’s Open Forum under GDS or WDS (Generic Derangement Syndrome or Woke Derangement Syndrome).

It’s not a noose. When a fisherman fell into the water, often times the boat had to circle back around to try and pick the man up. That took time, and a fisherman – thrashing in very water in clothing and boots – reached the point of exhaustion and hypothermia in a matter of minutes. The “noose” on the end of the rope is a actually a live-saving loop. It was far easier to throw a distance with the loop on the end and far easier for the man in the water to grab it. And if he could grab it, he could wrap over his shoulder and under his armpit and be dragged to the boat by the men there, without expending further reserves of energy.
Far from a symbol of “life being terminated”, the noose on the rope was an incredibly important life-saving device.

Just returned from a 4-week trip to Alaska. Virtually every town has some version of a monument to those who have died at sea. These memorials are as sacred as the veteran memorials. Ms. Munoz is a moron.

the problem is that Ms. Munoz truly believes she is righting historical and systemic injustice. She is justified, her conscience is clear, and she fought the good fight standing up for her less fortune brothers and sisters who just too oppressed to do it themselves.

Part of me feels that we need to educate everyone on how their food, fiber and fuel arrives at their house, but willfully ignorant people wouldn’t listen. This reminds me of the racist cotton nonsense a few years back. People are so far removed from it all that they don’t even know what the tools of the trades are even if you told them and explained it. They lack any knowledge at all on the topic.

I’m not even a knot expert, but I know a hangman’s noose when I see one. Anyone who’s seen a western should know what it looks like. That’s clearly not a hangman’s noose, and most of the “racist noose” hoaxes look nothing like it either.
