3. Trump emulates…George McGovern? Ugh. The President announced last night, “If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them.I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000.”

No, he won’t. It can’t happen, because Congress would never approve such a stupid and irresponsible hand-out, even a Congress with a larger percentage of incompetents than we are stuck with now. The President has to know that, so this is an unethical appeal to the morons in America who the Democrats have been targeting all year, especially the Democratic Socialists. The President is the Ethics Dunce of the convention, and what he said above is the Unethical Quote of the Week.

In the 1972 Presidential campaign, Senator George McGovern promised $1,000 to every American, man, woman and child, if he were elected. That was an even more irresponsible promise than Trump’s: $1,000 in 1972 would be $7,988.47 in today’s dollars. George lost in a landslide to Richard Nixon, and deserved to.

Sending $5,000 checks to each of the roughly 270 million adults in the U.S would cost more than $1.3 trillion, and we already have a $40 trillion national debt. Trump compared the hand-out to the bonus checks corporations give out to employees after a successful year. Yes, that’s how he sees his job as President: CEO. We knew that. However a nation isn’t a corporation (if this were a company, it would be a bankrupt company) and his “promise” is bats.

This morning Fox News had the revolting Reince Priebus, Super Weenie, on to discuss last night, and asked him about the “promise.” His answer: “Huminhuminhumina…” J.D. Vance took the same approach, saying, in essence, “Well, all the President is saying is that if we hold on to Congress, the nation’s economy will soar.” No, that’s not what he was saying. He said every adult citizen in the United States of America will get a check for $5,000. And they won’t.

4. Two hours! In yet another gobsmacking display of Trump’s narcissism, ego, lack of self-restraint, and self-destructive tendencies, he rambled on for two hours. I don’t think any speaker can engage an audience for two hours straight, and as a speech coach, I hold that no one should try. Especially Donald Trump. I don’t want to even look at my Facebook feed for fear that all the heads exploding might come through the computer screen and blow my face off. The speech does prove, like so much else, that the Axis narrative that the President is demented and must be removed by the 25th Amendment is pure confirmation bias and ostrich offal. Can you imagine Joe Biden giving a two hour speech?

5. Biggest ! Greatest! Best! After this ordeal, Trump claimed on Truth Social that the TV audience surpassed all expectations despite a rematch of the last Super Bowl being the competition. This is just the latest iteration of the President’s unbreakable addiction to puffery, most famously exhibited when he exaggerated the crowd’s size at his first inauguration.

6. NYT: Republicans are fearmongering! Nah, there’s no mainstream media bias! The Times “analysis ” of last night begins, “Down in the Polls, Republicans Embrace a Familiar Tool: Fear. At an unusual midterm gathering, President Trump and his allies painted Democrats as dangerously un-American.” [Gift link.] Well…

• You know…polls.
• Deceit: it’s true, fearmongering is a familiar tactic—from the Democratic Party. It’s amazing that the Times has the guts to write this. Does the article mention anywhere how the entire 2024 campaign was framed by Democrats as “perhaps the last election ever” and as an existential battle to save the country from fascism? Did the Times ever call this..

…fearmongering? It did not.
