Massie introduced his impeachment resolution on the House floor as he accused Hegseth of committing “high crimes and misdemeanors” through his handling of the war in Iran, military operations in Yemen and the Caribbean, the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, and his treatment of Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ)—you know, the guy who cleverly participated in a video telling members of the armed services what they already knew and encouraging them to defy their Commander in Chief , one of the most slimy political stunts in recent memory?

Massie lost the Republican primary for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District in May to Ed Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL backed by President Donald Trump. Massie lost 45% to 55%, and this absurd impeachment effort helps explain why.

The first article of impeachment alleges that Hegseth initiated the Iran war without a declaration of war, statutory authorization, an attack on the United States, or an imminent threat. The second accuses him of defying congressional directives to withdraw U.S. forces from Iran, while the third alleges that Hegseth continued hostilities after the expiration of the War Powers Resolution’s statutory time limits. Three through five detail Hegseths alleged “crimes.” Hegseth failed to minimize civilian casualties. The strikes against drug traffickers in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific.

The sixth article accuses Hegseth of retaliating against Kelly with an unconstitutional effort to suppress protected speech. The seventh aims at Hegseth’s involvement in the January operation that led to Maduro’s capture and extradition which Massie, falsely, alleges was illegal. ( Maduro had been duly indicted in Federal Court.) Finally, the eighth focuses on the administration’s military campaign in Yemen, accusing Hegseth of initiating Operation Rough Rider without congressional authorization or an imminent threat to the United States and of violating war-powers reporting requirements.

“These constitutional violations extend beyond the illegal war in Iran,” Massie said after reading the resolution. He accused Hegseth of “abusing the power of his office” and said Congress must not “turn a blind eye” to what he characterized as unconstitutional and illegal actions.

Riiiight. Victory Girls properly focused on why this is pure hooey.

Strip away Massie’s 34 pages of impeachment articles and legal language and the obvious problem here is that most of his outrage is really aimed at the Trump administration’s foreign policy. Donald Trump is Commander in Chief. Pete Hegseth didn’t sneak into the Pentagon one night, find the big red WAR button and start bombing Iran while Trump was asleep. He’s Trump’s Secretary of Defense, carrying out the military policy of the administration.

Massie believes Congress should have far more say over those decisions, and that’s certainly an argument he can make…He’s been fighting Trump over Iran and presidential war powers for quite some time, introducing War Powers resolutions and trying to get Congress to rein in the administration’s military actions. Those efforts haven’t gotten him what he wanted, and Massie now says he’s exhausted the other legislative options. With his time in Congress running out, he’s moved on to impeachment; not one article, not two, but eight of them against Pete Hegseth. So there, that’ll show ’em.

It shows ’em a political hack who will waste the time of every member of Congress to throw a tantrum.
