OK, quick: What did Jennifer Lawrence do that the Daily Caller felt was newsworthy?

OK, quick: What did Jennifer Lawrence do that the Daily Caller felt was newsworthy?

[WARNING:  For some bizarre reason, the second half of this post will not let me space out the paragraphs properly; WordPress is having some issues. I apologize, and I’ll fix it as soon as I can.]

I regularly peruse about 50 websites as part of my search for provocative ethics issues, including Tucker Carlson’s Daily Caller. It’s a conservative blog, of course, similar in content to Glenn Beck’s The Blaze, and a fair reverse-negative politically to the leftish Daily Beast. Scrolling through its various stories, I hit this headline:

Double Feature: Jennifer Lawrence Shows Sideboob AND Underboob Simultaneously [PHOTOS]

Now THAT’S “news you can use”!

Why is this kind of leering, sexist, fratboy junk—exactly what used to cause us to ridicule the British tabloids back when American newspapers had integrity— appearing on what is supposed to be a serious political commentary website? Simple, really:

  • Its linkbait.
  • Most of the Daily Caller’s readers are conservative males, a disturbing number of whom will drool over revealing [PHOTOS] of comely actresses young enough to be their granddaughters.
  • Too many conservatives, like Carlson, have deficient ethics alarms when it comes to reducing women to their body parts.

This wasn’t a departure for the Daily Caller, not at all: it posts this kind of crap regularly. (Here’s another.) The entire story regarding actress Lawrence’s exposure read as follows:

“Jennifer Lawrence clearly did not mind (or was not aware) that the Internet was abuzz with her flash of sideboob last week.Over the weekend, the actress simultaneously showed some sideboob AND underboob during “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” premiere in Paris. It was glorious.”

Wow. Stop the presses.

It isn’t just Carlson, of course. Conservative journalists and pundits as a group have a tendency to talk and act as if it’s still 1956, as if the 70’s didn’t happen, and that cute Mary Richards was still a daring pioneer for striking out on her own as an attractive, single, female professional. Combine this with the periodic brain-dead Republican politician who suggests that rape is no big deal, and it’s obvious how the Democrat PR machine doesn’t have to breal a sweat to make it seem like the next Republican majority will be hell bent on keeping women barefoot and pregnant (or in “binders “). The conservative disrespect for young women particDaily Callerulary is one reason why Hillary Clinton is the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016. Young female voters find conservatives creepy, and it’s no wonder. A lot of them are.
Right-wing radio host Michael Savage is really creepy, and he flashed his misogyny (he’s also a homophobe) during a recent show by attacking Fox News’ smarter, fairer, better educated, more professional, more objective and infinitely more pleasant anchor Megyn Kelly for no discernible reason other than her gender:
“I think what Kelly’s going to have to do is she’ll have to talk to Roger [Ailes] about adding special features on her website in order to build audience and revenue for the News Corporation. It’ll be like ‘See Megyn pluck her eyebrows for an extra 25 cents.’ ‘For only 35 cents more per month, watch Megyn apply makeup.’ ‘For 29 cents a month, see Megyn curl her hair.’ You know, they could do a lot with a woman.”
That’s right, Michael, they let women work now, and men just have to compete with them. I know it feels unfair.
Over at “Fox and Friends” last week, the Fox News morning show that I have never, ever been able to watch for more than five minutes at a stretch without feeling like Lex Luthor’s diabolical brain sucking device was reducing my IQ to that of an electric pencil sharpener, a male host decided to playfully “rib” his female colleague by using the Way Back Machine  to immerse her in those hilarious jokes from 1974 about how the girls were fleeing the kitchen and just showing up everywhere, bless ’em!
Steve Doocy had just interviewed members of the U.S. Navy Band’s chorus, the Sea Chanters, noting that women weren’t included in the group until 1980. Reacting to the segment, Brian Kilmeade, reliably the bottom of this particular barrel, quipped, “Women are everywhere. We’re letting them play golf and tennis now. It’s out of control!” Female host Gretchen Carlson, to her credit, refused to play along and walked off of the set. (imagine the response if Kilmeade had made the equivilent statement about integration), saying, “You read the headlines. Since men are so great. Take  [the women] away.”  Kilmeade ‘s rejounder:  “All right. Finally! …Leaving an all male crew.” I’m betting that its Carlson, not Kilmeade, facing network discipline. (Carlson could help by bucking the Fox directive that she and other on-camera women must dress like cocktail waitresses and strive to look like Barbie.)
Keep it up, Delta House.
You’ll stick us with Hillary yet.

  1. Conservative journalists and pundits as a group? I’m a regular reader of National Review online and they don’t publish this crap. Michael Savage is a pig, I’ll grant you (see his commentary on autism), but he’s hardly comparable to someone like former AUSA Andrew McCarthy or high academic Victor Davis Hanson. That said, the serious guys like the above mentioned men shouldn’t look the other way on this crap, it doesn’t help us, and it enables the other side to skate past hiding the biggest pig of all (Clinton) in their ranks.

    • “As a group” may have been unfair–maybe not. Rush has his wince-worthy sexist moments, as we all know. Hannity has a fratboy streak. Fox dresses its women, including Megyn, like bimbos, and the only female guests it allows on wouldn’t be out of place on an Atlantic City runway. The conservatives you cite are serious, but hardcore—they have nothing like teh visibility of The Daily Caller and Fox News, or the audience of talk radio.

  2. Jack, which of the morning news shows do you prefer? They all seem to compete for the coveted ‘lowest common denominator’ demographic. I can’t watch any of them. The Daily Caller is a weird mix…but the headlines can make me laugh out loud.
It’s all media seeking an audience. Michael Medved of talk radio is constrained by his producers from using words and references that ‘nobody understands’, so as to not alienate his audience. I doubt that he knows what side-boob photos are.
But, yes, conservatives do have their embarrassing drunk uncles, and they are the focus of the liberal press.

  3. “…show that I [am not] able to watch for more than five minutes at a stretch without feeling like Lex Luthor’s diabolical brain sucking device was reducing my IQ to that of an electric pencil sharpener…”

That’s a keeper – gonna memorize it – applicable to so many shows these days, too.

Seriously: Have you ever considered hiring a specialized, Jack Marshall-promoting “reader-spotter” – someone with proven skill at pinpointing persons’ most extraordinary writings for their quotability, and who has demonstrated intended achievement of “gone viral” results when promoting persons’ quotables – who would comb over all your Ethics Alarms posts, and enable your further immortality via a “JackMarshallisms” site or page(s)?

(I apologize: I asked above, before even researching BrainyQuotes. You could be – in my opinion, you belong – in good company there with a bunch of other Marshalls.)

    • You are very kind.
I decided a while back to let my style here reflect the real Jack rather than be self-consciously “professional” in my style and choice of words. I credit Ken White for that, who I admire, though he can still be a bit more free than I can.

  4. As a women, I don’t care for guys acting like frat boys; the narcissist, sexist, male chauvinist pig of the 60s and 70s is a massive turn-off.
It’s esp. distasteful if the guy is over forty, or maybe even over 35.
Then you can be assured he is going to be a jerk for the rest of his life.

One year when my mother was visiting here, we watched a movie from 1975, The Eiger Sanction, starring Clint Eastwood.
In this film, Clint plays a college professor who goes to Europe and climbs some mountain in the Alps.
Before he gets there, he gets up to all sorts of woman-degrading behavior, such as pinching one of his female students on the butt, leering at the breasts of various women right out in the open, making crude remarks and warning a woman “no strings” before he does her the favor of having sex with her. @@
(This also, although I am not positive, could be the Eastwood movie where he slaps a woman in the face for trying to get him to spend the night…and it plays out like she deserved it.)

I was really disgusted over this film and said so.
My mom then looked at me and said, “that’s exactly how alot of men acted in the 70s.”
    That is not good.
    Not good at all.

  5. “the Democrat PR machine doesn’t have to breal a sweat to make it seem like the next Republican majority will be hell bent on keeping women barefoot and pregnant ”

There are more substantial issues, such as the Republican nominee saying that Griswold v. Connecticut was wrongly decided. Opposing equal pay legislation didn’t help the Republicans. In other words, it’s not a matter of appearances.

As a matter of appearances, a woman who wants to be treated with dignity would be just as repelled by plenty of the sidebar material at Huffington Post. If it were appearances, both left and right would be losing.
