More Amazing Tales Of “The King’s Pass”: The Megan Barry Saga

You can’t make this stuff up. Well, you could, but nobody would believe you. That’s not quite right: I would believe you, but then I’ve seen this story.

Maybe you’ve seen some of it. There are interesting posts on Nashville’s disgraced and jettisoned mayor here, here, and here.

Surely you read them. No? I forgive you—after all, Facebook deems the output of this blog not fit for human eyes, so why should anyone bother reading, especially when Ethics Alarms persists in pointing out the astounding double standards being fought for in the media and by progressive warriors? Here, let be provide some quick bullet points as a review, kind of like those Netflix shows do in their second seasons to recap the previous season…

  • “Nashville’s first term mayor Megan Barry admitted yesterday that she had an extramarital affair with the police officer in charge of her security detail. She apologized “for the harm I’ve done to the people I love and the people who counted on me” but said she won’t be resigning. In a news conference, she said nothing illegal happened and no policies were violated.” The Nashville Mayor’s Affair, 2/1/18
  • (Same source as above): “This is sexual harassment. The officer was a subordinate, and she was his boss, with the power to fire him or worse. There can be no genuine consent in such situations….the conservative media constantly points out that when Republicans are involved in scandals, the news media always places their party affiliation in the first paragraph, but when the miscreant is a Democrat, it is buried or not mentioned at all. Let’s use this story as a test:1. NOLA (local), below: No mention of the Mayor’s party at all.2. The Tennessean (local), below: Third paragraph.3. USA Today: 22nd paragraph!

    4. NPR: Nope!

    5. NBC: Nope!

    6. ABC: Nope!”

  • And this just in! Nashville’s main newspaper, the Tenneseean, reports that Rob Forrest, the Mayor’s married lover, earned substantially more overtime than the other bodyguards on Barry’s secuirty detail, $173,843.13  between July 2015 and January 2017, which was nearly $53,000 more than the other four bodyguards received combined. But, as several internet wags have noted, let’s be fair: Rob was doing more for the mayor than those other bodyguards..How Many Rationalizations Can You Spot In This Op-Ed? (2/20/18)
  • “The statement is a whitewash, a delusion, and a lie. It is the upbeat farewell of a successful leader, not what it should be, the humble request for forgiveness from a terrible one, acknowledging wrongdoing and promising to be better. The statement shows no contrition, no remorse, no accountability, no courage, and no conscience. Based on these words, I think Megan Barry is a sociopath.” Unethical Quote Of The Week: Nashville Mayor Megan Barry’s Resignation Statement, 3/7/18
  • Same source: “… after various revelations that suggested illicit and excessive compensation somehow made their way to her huggy-bug, both Barry and paramour Robert Forrest had to plead guilty to theft of property over $10,000 — a Class C Felony. She will pay $11,000 to the city in restitution and serve three years’ probation, as will Forest, though he will have to pay back $45,000 to the city.”

You really ought to read Barry’s resignation statement.

Now, are you ready for Barry’s next chapter? Are you sure? Don’t say I didn’t warn you if your head explodes.

From the Tennessee Star:

[D]isgraced former Nashville Mayor Megan Barry has landed a job — teaching women about the trials and tribulations of politics at Fisk University. Barry began teaching a “Women in Politics” class three weeks ago… WSMV reported Fisk’s statement about Barry’s job:

“Megan Barry is currently teaching a spring semester class at Fisk University. As a University, we believe that Mrs. Barry can provide valuable insight into the role of women in public life. Several students have already expressed their appreciation for her perspective on the trials and tribulations of serving in a leadership role.”

Our political elite depend upon and thrive by The King’s Pass. “Their achievements, in their own minds and those of their supporters and fans, have earned them a more lenient ethical standard. This pass for bad behavior is as insidious as it is pervasive, and should be recognized and rejected whenever it raises its slimy head.” A non-political star who was male and conservative would be lucky to land a job in a bait shop after the kind of illicit and illegal conduct, not to mention dishonest and moronic public statements that Barry was guilty of.

Needless to say, Fisk University should hide its head in a bag, and any parent with two neurons to rub together and  ethical instincts a few degrees better than of Kevin Spacey’s should pull their students out of the place. To be fair, finding a bag big enough will be difficult.

  1. Oy! Name That Party; a game as old as time itself.

Remember when those Bell, CA Lefties got caught with their ‘nads in a ringer?

    (bolds/caps mine throughout)
09/21/2010 : “Today, eight city council members were arrested in Bell, California for what Los Angeles County District Attorney labeled ‘corruption on steroids.’ Thus far, every major news outlet that has reported on the story has omitted the fact that all eight individuals arrested are Democrats.

”These glaring omissions come only weeks after NewsBusters reported that of the 351 stories on the then-brewing controversy, 350 had omitted party affiliations, and one had mentioned they were Democrats only in apologizing for not doing so sooner.

”ABC, CBS, the Los Angeles Times, the Associated Press, Bloomberg, USA Today, CNN, MSNBC, NPR, and the San Francisco Chronicle all reported on the arrests today without mentioning party affiliations.

”One commenter at CNN’s online story got it spot on: ‘I notice there is no mention of the party affiliation of the accused. I can find no mention of it in any story on the internet. THIS MUST MEAN THEY WERE ALL DEMOCRATS.’ ”

  2. Well, this is inconvenient. Now, when I want to refer to “disgraced democrat mayor M. Barry”, I’m going to have to be more specific.

  3. Honest question: how many corrupt elected Mayors, Governors, State Legislators, Members of Congress, Presidents in the last 50 years have taken their blatantly unethical or illegal scandals while in office and regardless of their poor choices they’ve been allowed to move themselves into cushy lucrative positions in the media, corporate america, speaking tours, or academia (academia: where they are directly influencing young minds) and at the same time what was their political leanings – Republican, Democrat, Independent, Libertarian, Progressive, Socialist, Communist, etc?

I’d really love to see an honest comprehensive study like that.

I think a surprise side affect of the study would show us is that the general public is so morally and ethically dumbed down that they unconsciously, or consciously, rationalize the corruption; we can’t stop it, everyone is doing it, tit-for-tat, they’re just as bad, they had it coming, King’s Pass, it’s for a good cause, there are worse things, etc, etc. I think politicians are a direct reflection of the underlying core values of the public because people aren’t likely to vote for a candidate or hire a scandal ridden x-politician for cushy lucrative top positions if those politicians are known to be clear violators of our core beliefs. The core beliefs of our population are in utter turmoil!

Who’s going to rise from the ashes and save us from ourselves?

  4. Fisk is a pretty famous “historically black” university. Maybe they were trying to make their faculty more diverse? Maybe they were short on convicted felons? But if they wanted an expert to teach kids how American politics really works, could they have made a better choice? I’m not sure.

    • OB: Assuming your first and third sentences weren’t meant as a setup for an even nastier joke (it’s what I do), I’ll just go with this:
Maybe their current wait time for a new professor is 5-10 years…maybe a bit less with time off for good behavior.

      • Hah! Well Wim, actually, I thought it was kind of sad an important institution like Fisk had lowered itself to hiring this woman, a white woman, when there are doubtless other very competent poly sci teachers of an African American persuasion out there looking for jobs. As our President is fond of saying, “Sad.”

It’s the equivalent of hiring John Kerry to teach organizational loyalty, military science or treaty negotiation.
