This drives me crazy. I’m preparing a sexual harassment training seminar for an association, and this story just went into the introduction.
A nice cheery puff piece is up at E!On-line. about reminiscences by actress Leslie Mann (make that feminist, woke, #Me too-supporting actress Leslie Mann) about the time she shot a movie with actor and one-time stud-muffin Brendan Frasier. A sample:
“Every morning before work we were in the hair and makeup trailer getting ready. And he would come in and kiss me on the lips,” she tells host Busy Philippswith an ear-to-ear grin. “Just like, ‘Good morning!’ And kiss. You know, like he’s European or something.”
Leslie got used to those morning smooches—earlier in the clip, the actor cheekily notes that since her character was supposed to fall for Brendan’s onscreen, she just went ahead and “fell in love with him in real life”—so it was pretty jarring for her when the kisses stopped suddenly one day.
Frasier didn’t ask permission for these spontaneous kisses, which #MeToo emphatically calls sexual assault in principle, just not when they like the assaulter. It is sexual assault, just like this is…
Whether it is welcome or not by the female target, the fact that the conduct occurs in public or with the knowledge of others in the workplace sends a clear and dangerous message to other employees that this is acceptable behavior, and that all women within hugging, kissing and groping distance of Frasier, or Biden, or Harvey Weinstein, are expected to submit with a smile…or else.
Note also that what Biden and Frasier have done with nary a peep of outrage from supposedly “woke” women —allegedly concerned about institutionalized abuse in the workplace because of power distribution and male assumptions—is exactly what Donald Trump was talking about in the infamous conversation with Billy Bush, just in particularly vulgar terms.
The #MeToo and anti-sexual harassment movement is being run by flaming hypocrites and frauds who regularly undermine their own credibility by demonstrating no real understanding of what they are supposedly indignant about, and by flip-flopping and changing the rules whenever they feel like it, or a harasser is sufficiently cute or powerful. All they have now is a faux and floating standard that they have weaponized to go after the people and politicians they don’t like or don’t find momentarily attractive enough. John Lasseter, Harvey, Al Franken and the old, fat, homely or no longer powerful are attacked and sometimes destroyed as sexual predators, but Joe Biden can happily rise in the polls and Leslie Mann can gush about how she loved her famous co-star’s ambush kisses when he was young and hot.
This is why so many Americans don’t understand sexual harassment or think it is ridiculous, and why so many bosses and co-workers keep doing it. Its advocates don’t understand it either.
