3. When did they stop putting pockets on men’s dress shirts? Apparently this became a thing around four years ago. Brilliant. At exactly the time that everyone is forced to carry their %$#@ smart phone with them every second, shirt-makers decide eliminating pockets is “cool.” I bought a bunch of new dress shirts and it never occurred to me to check whether they had pockets. At one point last week, I even dropped my cell phone into an imaginary pocket only to have it slide down the front of my shirt and land on my foot.
4. Gee, does this mean that the Axis will say that Democrats don’t have to pack the Supreme Court? SCOTUS turned down the President’s effort to stop the mail-in ballot scam because it’s too soon to the mid-terms to implement it. That seems right; it also means the partisan Federal judges who kept stalling the process did their jobs, advancing the Left’s agenda. All of the Trump-appointed Justices voted with the majority, belying the false narrative I constantly hear from the Trump Deranged that SCOTUS simply rubber-stamps whatever their “king” wants. Naturally, the President had to attack the Court with one of his patented diatribes:
“Republicans just got another bad decision from the United States Supreme Court, one that the Court System took forever to give, and then blamed it, in part, on no time left to implement a solution to our totally CORRUPT and out of control Mail-In voting “disaster,” which is a laughing stock all over the World, and where we are the only country that has to endure such a Nation Destroying SCAM. Justices Alito and Thomas, legends both, strongly disagreed with this horrible, highly political, ruling. It is a big loss for Republicans, and America itself, and makes cheating by the Radical Left “Dumocrats,” on Mail-In Ballots, a much easier thing to do – And now they have an open field to do so! The Supreme Court has really let our Country down! Certain Justices are petrified of these crazed and depraved Democrats, and are totally unable to show the courage necessary to save our America. Their horrible decision on Tariffs will be costing the U.S.A., for many years to come, Trillions and Trillions of Dollars. They didn’t even state, “money paid does not have to be paid back,” much to the benefit of entities that truly hate our Country, and have been RIPPING IT OFF FOR YEARS, unnecessarily costing us, immediately, Billions of Dollars. Likewise, the Supreme Court’s Decision on Birthright Citizenship is a complete and total disaster for America, and has already led to massive corruption with respect to “citizenship” in our Country. The damage done to America is incalculable, and they know this, just as everyone else does – It is an irreparable and unrecoverable harm! The Court’s inability and unwillingness to do the right thing for our Country will go down, in a very negative way, in the annals of History. This Supreme Court is bullied and cajoled by the Radical Left into making decisions that have set America back at least a hundred years. These are not the people I interviewed to serve on the United States Supreme Court, they are merely a shell of their original selves, a Court that is costing the United States Trillions of Dollars with shockingly bad rulings that are of such magnitude that it won’t be easily possible for our Country to recover or heal. It is a Court that will go down as having rendered some of the most destructive, hurtful, and damaging decisions in our Country’s history. It is not easy for me to write this criticism of the United States Supreme Court – it will likely cost me dearly for years to come – but I feel it my obligation and duty, as President, to do so for the America we love! Thank you for your attention to this very important matter. God bless the U.S.A. President DONALD J. TRUMP
5. “Then put it in a paper bag, swing it over your head and scream like a chicken!” So in order to claim my special bonus discount described in #2, I had to…
- Call the billing department. No, they wouldn’t connect me.
- Repeat a 10 character promotion code.
- Listen to another agent, this one from some other third world country, read from a script the approximate length of “David Copperfield”…
- …from which I learned that Apple was partnering with DirecTV in the promotion, to promote its gift cards.
- This meant that I couldn’t lock in the discount (which required my paying four months up front) in the current call, because I had to pay for it with an Apple Gift Card.
- Thus I have to 1) travel to the nearest Walgreens or Safeway 2) go to the gift card section 3) buy an Apple Gift Card with $300 4) come home 5) call the same number I just called and read the promotional code again, and 6) read the card number to the agent, whereupon I will have accepted the promotion. (I hope there are enough “Dick Van Dyke Show” fans out there in Ethics Alarms Land to appreciate the quote above.)
6. And on the topic of robocalls…How is it legal to have fake caller IDs show up on my phone? In addition to names of imaginary people, I have seen the names of colleges, law firms, the IRS, TV stations and Fortune 500 companies. This is phone fraud. I assume it’s illegal, but what do you do about it?
Direct TV wanting a gift card sounds like a scam. I would be careful.
Came to say the same thing! This gift card business sounds very sketchy.
At a minimum, try calling from a number on your bill or their website to confirm this is legitimate.
FYI: Direct TV & Apple Promotional Offer | DIRECTV Community Forums; apparently the scammers call direct TV in the background to get your information to make it seem more legitimate.
100% scam. I wouldn’t waste my time any further on it.
Also, a warning for Jack and others: my understanding is AI is so advanced now that after just 3 seconds of hearing your voice, they can replicate it fairly accurately. Do not interact with these callers, at all.
Any call I’m unsure of I’ll answer with a gruff ” ‘lo”. One syllable, nothing more. At the first hint of spam, which is usually when I hear that distinctive tone telling me the call is being transferred from robocall to live 3rd world agent, I’m gone. Even that’s probably too much.
Exactly, the Apple Gift card scam is very well-known.
Yet, people fall for it.
Don’t fall for it, Jack.

Even Apple opposes the scam: https://support.apple.com/en-us/120933

Ditto. Any institution, organization or company that wants to be paid with gift cards, especially with gift cards from a specific company, such as Amazon, is a big red flag. There’s something wrong here.
It is illegal to do it fraudulently, but caller ID is based on early 1990’s phone technology, when people were naively trusting and security measures were not considered. In today’s age, spoofing a caller ID is trivial.
Companies are trying to retroactively adapt caller ID to have stricter security measures, but it will cause some the function to stop working on older landline phones, mostly directly hurting the older population more likely to have a landline phone. So the uprade process is stalling out.
6) I got tired of the robocalls too. So, I bought a VTech IS8151 which screens calls automatically. It has an approved list and directory. So, anyone you put in the directory or approved list is passed through like a normal call, all others have to state their name and push the pound key after an outgoing message to the effect. This is still a land line and your probably using only your smart phone but I think there are apps available even for smart phones. I have a flip phone but my wife uses a smart phone – we don’t get many calls on them though (I hardly even carry my flip phone).
We were getting anywhere from 12 to 17 calls per day and they were all scams with the exception of a very, very few. In the 3 or 4 months we’ve had the Vtech, our phone has only rang about 4 times.
“I have a flip phone but my wife uses a smart phone – we don’t get many calls on them though (I hardly even carry my flip phone).”
Same here…H/T from a FELLOW LUDDITE!
PWS
No, still have a land line for business calls.
